trust me, I understand the annoyance factor...and the person you mentioned in your reply was not someone I was directing my post towards...I'm talking about the people who are just down right mean

Joeyjoe it is the nature of this website for EVERY thread about a specific show to become a "us vs. them" thread. Look into every thread about: Dracula, Assassins, Sondheim threads, Rent...the list goes on. For some reason people here feel the need to rip you apart if you like a show that they do not.
Even brooklyn has people against it and the poor show hasnt even opened yet!

"Watching a frat boy realize just what he put his d!ck in...ex's getting std's...schadenfruede" ~ Ave Q
"when dangers near, exploit their fear" ~ Reefer Madness the Musical
the thing about Brooklyn is that, even though it hasn't opened HERE yet, there are posters who have seen the show already in Denver, who are already gaga over it... unfortunately, it's up to everyone else to wade through all the gaga, to get to the point of the post... and mark my words, we're going to be deluged with gagazillions more Brooklyn threads, all saying basically the same things, and THAT is what is going to be bashed...

CAN WE GET BACK ON SUBJECT?! LOL. i actually thought this was an interesting Wicked thread.. I will admit some are stupid (even though i do love the show) but this one actually had intelligent stuff to it. so let's forget about the whole bashing wicked thing and get back on track. i really want to see if anyone has found anymore "Musical Secrets".. please?!
As I have stated bf, I love the fact that so many people feel so strongly about a Broadway show (in this case Wicked). There are certainly worse things that could be debated. I think it is positive for our industry and its future that young people (esp.) are so passionate about live theatre.
I am sure that Phantom, Les Miz, Cats, any show that becomes a big hit, has its detractors. Fine. But don't steal joy from those that love the hits. It is those young impassioned theatregoers that will hopefully keep us all employed in the future.
Laughter is much more important than applause. Applause is almost a duty. Laughter is a reward.

Wow... this thread has gone from simple questions to ANOTHER full out war between the wicked lovers and haters. Yes, i'm a newbie to these boards, and yes I'm only 16, but still... I haven't seen Wicked yet either. I only own the OBCR. I'm actually going sometime during December to see the show before Idina leaves. but that has nothing to do with this... As so many other posters have said, WHY do you have to bash Wicked? It's a BROADWAY show. This board is meant to discuss BROADWAY shows. If the topic of a thread is meant to bash a show, then you can bash it. We do have free speech. But please... don't ruin threads like this one. EVERY SINGLE wicked thread I have read has had some sort of bashing. Sure, there is shows that I absolutely despise (Cats being one of them) but I don't go bashing it unless the thread is designed to tell about what you think is the worst show. So please... can't we just get along?

I suppose I am amazed and yet dissapointed by the commentary on this thread. First, I would like to thank all of you who have positively contributed to the actual topic of this thread that I began. I was very careful to post the message I did, for fear of not wanting to contribute to the whole love verses hate Wicked argument. I was hoping many of you would be able to provide me with some musical intellect regarding the score. Thank you to those that did.
Now, the dissapointment. I CAN NOT BELIEVE the audacity of some of these postings. HOW DARE YOU...Ms. AL Dente for insulting the intelligence of this entire board calling us "Misguided Teens." I will have you know I am 31 years of age, have quite an extensive education in Opera as well as Musical Theatre. Most of these folks, however young or old, regardless of education, have a passion for theatre and music. I was personally insulted by your comments as well as the rest of this board I am sure. I beleive you owe everyone an apology.

Alright you ppl who don't like Wicked, Why are you clicking on Wicked related links if you don't like it??? Ummm...I don't mean to be out of place or anything but I think it's extremely rude for you to start making fun of teens and Wickedon a Wicked post. I mean HELLO! If ya don't like it don't bother to respond! You don't hear me going around making fun of other musicals/shows just becuz I don't like them, now do you? Let me say this better, It offends people. Do you think you're better than teens and you can just make fun of them becuz they're younger than you? That's not right. You're a critic and just so you know no one likes a critic. You should be ashamed! However, I'm sorry if I offended you, I was just stating my opinion about the way you're acting, rude and immature, so I hope you try not to offend more people on these message boards in the future.

Thank you for your rational comments and your castigation of those who would label with a broad brush.
Who knows what subtle musical references to Harold Arlen's msuic from the "Wizard of Oz" Mr. Schwartz may have included? And who knows how many of them may have been inadvertant or subconscious? I;ve spotted a few of them myself, including some mentioned here, and a few others. But what purpose is served by sharing them? The whole point of discovering a hidden gem is discovering it yourself!
Now--as to how this thread has become a bashing fest. My perspective on things.
I've been attending broadway shows for 44 of my almost 50 years on this good earth. I've seen lots of good shows and lots of less good shows, some mediocre shows, and some truly awful ones. On very rare ocassions, a show leaves me truly stunned and amazed (in a positive way.) One such experience was the original Man of LaMancha (at the ANTA Washington Square.) Another was A Chorus Line. To that list I now add Wicked. In between those shows were many that I have enjoyed, but none that left quite the same impact on me (at least in the realm of musicals. My list of dramas is a whole other story.)
Taste is always subjective. In my particular case, although Wicked isn't something that particularly appeals to me in terms of musical style (pop-style singing just isn't my cup of tea in a musical), and despite it's typical for Bway these days horribly over-amplified sound and significant deviation from the book on which it is based, something about it coalesces into a whole that gets me past those issues of personal taste. As a package, it works. The book, the score, the cast the set, the costumes, the lighting all come together.
A long time ago, I was a bit of a stage-struck teenager. I'm glad that my interest was nurtured and not bashed by people who have need to feel superior, or I might not have spent a good deal of my life working in the theatre.
And to those young, eager teens here--don't bother responding to those egging you on. You only encourage them when you do. Just shake your head and move on. Keep the passion. You;re going to need it later on.
And BTW--a totally irrelevant tidbit. Did you know that the same year Haorld Arlen and Yip Harburg wrote the songs for Wizard of Oz, the also wrote Lydia the Tatooed Lady for the Marx Brothers?
wow durleste that was very nice of u to take the time out to encourage the teens on the board not to lose their passion. if wicked is the door that leads them to the world of musical theatre, or theatre in general then i say "great", the more the merrier.
or perhaps for some of us not the door that lead us...just something we currently enjoy...
sum, check for grammar before making fun to "teens"

and StateOfJade Never once did I say that some of the things said weren't funny...if you open you're eyes it's pretty well known that I take a crack at Wicked myself every so often...it's when people cross the line from funny to mean that I get annoyed...

and before you tell me I have a metal rod up my ass, why don't you check my original post in this topic...I didn't take either side. I just said I didn't see a reason for the rudness...check some of my past posts...I think you'll find a hard time finding other people that think I have a "rod up my ass"

To "Ms". Pooh, if at 31, you're wondering about musical secrets in Wicked and scolding me for thinking it silly, then I'm quite sure, an "apology" is not exactly the thing *you* need most. And it's "Mr." to clarify.
*Shrug* I don't need the opinion of other people to justify something I thought. And don't put words into my mouth, I didn't say anything about you taking sides. Cool your jets.
