Yah, I'm with that thing too, minus the Jessica insert Kellie. Okay well actually that isn't me at all, but the general 'feel' of it is me...
I actually kind of get offended when people mention 'misguided teens' and things about '14 year old teeny boppers'(not mentioned in this thread, but many others). I am 14 and as far as I know I am not misguided nor a teeny-bopper, unless one of you would like to point out to me something I am missing that would make me a misguided teenybopper.
What is Broadway? A street? Some say it's a street. Some say it is the best street in the world. Others think its terrible. That's the beauty of it, it's terribly beautiful. Some hate it and don't know why. Others love it and don't know why. That's what makes it so wonderful, it's a mystery.
----There is no need for me to tell my opinion on WICKED, it doesnt matter. I just dont understand why people must bitch and moan about it when people talk about it! My god, let people have seperate opinions. Some people didnt like Caroline... (im not one of them so dont attack me)...if you see "WICKED" or "Idina" or "Cheno" DONT READ IT!!!
Have a nice day! :) ----
AMEN TO THAT!!!
thanks whatdoineedwithlove -its nice to see thers still some neutral board members here besides me
For the millionth time: I LOVE WICKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'VE PAID FULL PRICE FOR THE SHOW TWICE AND I LIVE IN FL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you guys are acting a little too sensitive about the whole show and I really tired of people telling me what I supposedly like and/or don't like. There is not a single show playing on Broadway that I've seen that I have hated or bash.
David walked into the valley
With a stone clutched in his hand
He was only a boy
But he knew someone must take a stand
There will always be a valley
Always mountains one must scale
There will always be perilous waters
Which someone must sail
-Into the Fire
Scarlet Pimpernel
I agree, I am also very tired of the wicked bashing. I am a teen male who enjoys the show. And I sure as hell am not a teeny bopper!
Wicked is for everyone. No, it's not the best Musical ever to hit Broadway, obviously. But it's quite fun, ejoyable, and touching. I agree with whoever said it's an escape from reality, which is 100 percent true. The story is for anyone who's ever had a best friend.
People should be glad Wicked is getting a ton of people excited for live Theater, and making more and more people wanting to come to Broadway.
So please, just let us be, and enjoy this show! It's a fun and exciting show, with an enjoyable score, and a touching story. If you don't like this show there's no need to express that feeling in every damn Wicked thread, when someone is asking an innocent question.
I think it's a differrence between stating your opinion on a show and accusing others of why they like the show.
"I didn't enjoy Wicked when I saw it" is fine.
"Wicked is one of the worst shows I have ever seen and is only doing well because conformist teenagers need something to obsess over" or whatever is constantly said is hurtful to teenagers, such as myself. I'm a teenager and even though I don't like some classic shows such as 42nd Street, I'm still entitled to my intelligence, am I not?
To whoever wrote the stuff about misguided teens or whatever (it's late and I just want to say this) I'm a drama major at New York University. There was a whole giant group of drama majors who all have seen this show and most of whom loved it. The ones who didn't like it said they didn't like it and wandered away when other were belting the tunes. So, please... love it or leave it... no one's forcing you to theorize or study shows you hate, so don't worry about it, and move on.
back to the subject - i was in the show and i know that the wicked witch of the west from the movie music pops up a few times. i have the entire score.... its right after the as long as your mine scene
Because of the nature of theatre as a tool for artistic expression, it is impossible to say something is "better" or "worse" than anything else. To brand something as "fluff" and comapare it to something that is generally thought of as "not fluff" is like comparing Scott Joplin's music to Bach's. Both are beautiful, well-respected and influential in their own right, while still remaining completely different and maybe even appealing to completely seperate groups of people. Jazz music is one of the most influential movements in the history of world music. It would be asinine and ignorant for a fan of jazz to shun classical music, or vice versa.
The point is, there is room under the guise of theatre for many different types of work. Something like Wicked has all the merit and deserves as much attention as I Am My Own Wife or (fill in a show you think is "not fluff"). If every show on Broadway was Pacific Overtures or I Am My Own Wife, the theatre going public would soon be whittled down to a dwindling group....that means loss of jobs for theatre artists, a general loss of interest in theatre itself, and sadder yet, loss of oppurtunities for artists to create.
And this is coming from a person who concerns himself mostly in "straight" theatre, classical and comtemporary, which most people trumpet as decidedly "not fluff," but which would put many others to sleep...
Also, let's try not to use our credentials to lend value to our opinions about art. It's great that an "NYU drama student" thinks that Wicked has artistic value, but I know an NYU prof who said that if he had seen the show before his students submitted papers on it, he would have "strongly recommended" they choose something else. A homeless man with a middle school education could (hypothetically) wander off the street and into Caroline or Change, and the themes might touch him just as deeply, if not moreso, than someone with a PhD from Yale.
Good point Chauv, but here's the difference between the people who enjoy a bit more "high brow fare", if you will and the Wicked/Hairspray heads, "we" don't spend all of our time, polluting this or any other board with 500 inane threads about the show. That's where it becomes annoying and worthy of mocking. Nothing wrong with all kinds of theater, heck, i even enjoyed myself at DOTV, but you'll never see me writing more than a few things about a show I loved. I don't care what Swoozie Kurtz does at the stage door or whether or not Anika Rose and Tonya Pinkins actually have a strong bond outside of the theater. Understand my point?
i heard that if you take the 2, 4, and 8th note of each song from wicked and put them together...you get the same thing as if you take the 2, 4 and 8th note from each song from wizard of oz....NOTHING!
Good point Al...it does become annoying for some (like us), to read inane postings about Idina's latest zit, but on some level, I think hey, at least people are showing some passion about theatre...and I think the purpose of any kind of art is to arouse some sort of passionate feelings...
Chauv - that was very well stated - thanks for the point of view, Possum!
"I don't really get the ending, all i can go with is when after several months,Judith saw Pat sang, and later she kissed him on the toilet, after that the story back to where Pat went down from the stage after he'd sung, and he went to the italian lady.I just don't get it,what Judith exatcly meant when he kissed Pat that she had seen, and did Pat end up together with The Italian Lady? Please help me,thank u very much!"
Quote from someone on IMDB in reference to a movie he/she didn't understand. Such grammar!
I think that Wicked has brought a lot of people into the theatre community that otherwise wouldn't think twice about seeing a Broadway show. I know for me it's always been hard to find friend's to see a show with me (I'm 19 and have been going to the theatre ever since I can remember) However, they all wanted to see Wicked because it was something the knew a little bit about and after hearing the music thought it would be something they may enjoy.
So I've brought 9 friends to see the show and every single one of them has asked me about other shows we could go see and even other shows that I like that have closed. These are people that would NEVER go to the theatre and I really don't think I would have got them there if it weren't for Wicked (or a show similar to it)
If other people are doing the same thing that's a lot of people that are going out and spending money on show tickets that's a lot of extra money that's just going to be put back into the Broadway community.
I'm not one to praise myself at all but I like to think that I'm not one of these "misguided teens" that are so often picked on on this board. I'm also a student of Music Industry and Business and I would like to work somehow with Broadway. If I had the chance to be involved in a show that I knew would appeal to people of all ages, races, etc. you can bet that I would be first in line to invest in that show.
So you don't like Wicked, that's fine, I have absolutely no problem with that. AND, I will be the frist one to admit that the endless threads about how you're Kristin's new best friend because you had the same color nail polish on when you met her for the 57th time at the stage door are EXTREMELY annoying. BUT, think of it like this...all of these people that have been turned on to Wicked are on a BROADWAY message board exploring new shows and such. There's a good chance that they will go and see some of the shows discussed. Is it not better to deal with the posts then have them not on this board and not out seeing other shows? Now, I'm not talking about the harmless little jokes (often from someone who has the hottest icons on any message board...EVER with the initails MG) but to the people that consistantly and seriously bash these people.
So please, I know everyone has their open opinions...I didn't like POTO but do you see me on here bashing it and making fun of the "phans"? No, you don't. I know how to respect other people's opinions even when they're different than mine.
I'm pretty sure this is the longest response I have ever posted and it will probably remain the longest response I will ever post...I'm also pretty sure that because of it's length a lot of people skipped over it. But, if one person reads it and understands what I'm trying to say, it's all worth it :)
Idina: Somehow I got myself to the stage, came out at the end of the show, and I had some kind of closure.
Some guy: You looked great!
Idina: Thanks...I WAS SO HIGH!

it always amazes me how any Wicked thread turns into an "us vs. them" argument... to quote an earlier post regarding so-called "wicked-bashers"...
"if you like wicked, that's fine... there are plenty who do, and plenty who don't... and for the most part the ones who don't have specific reasons why they don't... it's not that people hate wicked, it's the fact that this board was overRUN with the "OMG it's the best show ever" threads, and the constant posting about what (unprofessional, i might add) bloopers might happen or did happen and EXPECTING them to happen, what Idina did or didn't do at the stagedoor... and don't get me started on the horrendous grammar these kids use... that's a WHOLE other subject...
anyway, believe me it get's really tiresome... then there are the people who love wicked who are just the opposite, who can have a decent conversation/discussion about the show, respect others opinions, etc, such as Derek2, formanatrix, yes, even emutional, although emu is teetering... but i enjoy reading their posts because they can back up what their opinions with intelligent argument, the same way many of those who dislike the show can back up what they're saying..."
now, THIS thread seems to be quite a different story, with people posting intelligently... but, why oh WHY must every Wicked thread turn into a "lovers vs haters" bash-a-thon?
the thing that amuses me the most is that this WASN'T a stupid topic!
Yes, it's been discussed but not recently...
Idina: Somehow I got myself to the stage, came out at the end of the show, and I had some kind of closure.
