I saw La Belle in HOUSE OF FLOWERS at the Westbury Music Fair. I enjoyed the show but it wasn't Broadway material.

I worked on "Whistle Down the Wind."  The official reason that the show was "postponed" was -- ironically enough -- that Really Useful was nervous about losing the Tony Award to "Steel Pier" that season!  That and to give the creatives more time to work out the kinks.  Something that might have been done in Washington had not each one of them disappeared after opening night.

I remember a musical based on the comic strip Hazel the Witch was announced around 1999/2000 that never went anywhere.

the Whoopi Goldberg produced musical
WHITE NOISE which had a development run in New Orleans then after some changes had a pre-broadway run in Chicago & never tansfered

No, "Funny Girl" with Lea Michelle was never official.  It was to have been revived in 2012 with Lauren Ambrose, but the show was cancelled in late 2011 when several investors pulled their funding.  The show was going to open in Los Angeles first at The Ahmanson Theatre, and then go to New York.

Wasn’t the Imperial Theatre lines up to receive Funny Girl if my memory serves me correct?

Correct. A real bummer this never happened. I would have loved the have seen Sher's production with Lauren Ambrose.

Thanks for that and very interesting. Didn’t know they were nervous of Steel Pier

Did the producers actually put the marquee up at the Martin Beck theatre? 

The Martin Beck theatre is a Jujamcyn theatre, a theatre group that has never hosted a ALW show before or since, do you know why ALW switched from the Shuberts Organization, this was lined up for the flagship Shubert Theatre according to Gerald Schonefeld and at the time apart from Jesus Christ Superstar that went to the Mark Hellinger Theatre and Starlight Express that ended up in the Gershwin/Uris, all his other shows played in a Shubert property, why did  he switch?

I guess transferring a iconic story to America and get Jim Steinman to do the lyrics, should have been a big hit, however what the booked lacked the score didn’t and Jim Steinman lyrics were sensational, especially the song ‘unsettled scores,’ which is breathtaking.

Phantom of London, no I don't think "Whistle" ever put up a marquee.  I always wondered what became of the show after DC, and when it didn't come to NYC.  Was it ever done regionally anywhere in the US?

Davis Gaines played the lead in "Whistle,"  with Irene Molloy as the leading lady.  So many were certain that DG would become a mega-superstar once it came to NYC.

I want to say I’ve seen a picture of the Whistle marquee at the Martin Beck, but it’s been so long I could be confusing it with a picture of the theatre in DC. It’s a shame it didn’t make it to Broadway. I would have loved to have seen what Hal Prince did with the staging.

There was a small-scale tour, which I saw in Philadelphia in February of 2008. I think it closed early right after that.

Whistle Down the Wind was a dreary show and Gale Edwards was a dull director on this and JCS at the Lyceum.  So bland.
