I loved that opening scene with Julia, Tom, and Sam! That was adorable. Focus more on those 3!

"I may have to temporarily blind you."

ROFLMAO

Cheyenne Jackson tickled me. AFTER ordering SoMMS a drink but NOT tickling him, and hanging out with Girly in his dressing room (where he DIDN'T tickle her) but BEFORE we got married. To others. And then he tweeted Boobs. He also tweeted he's good friends with some chick on "The Voice" who just happens to be good friends with Tink's ex. And I'm still married. Oh, and this just in: "Pettiness, spite, malice ....Such ugly emotions... So sad." - After Eight, talking about MEEEEEEEE!!! I'm so honored! :-)

I need a gif of that Wes Taylor "You're tearin' me apart!" bit immediately!

"The gods who nurse this universe think little of mortals' cares. They sit in crowds on exclusive clouds and laugh at our love affairs. I might have had a real romance if they'd given me a chance. I loved him, but he didn't love me. I wanted him, but he didn't want me. Then the gods had a spree and indulged in another whim. Now he loves me, but I don't love him." - Cole Porter

Tonight's episode made me dislike the character of Ellis even more. Thurman was very good in the last musical number. It was great to see Frank return, so we can see more of Brian d'Arcy James' acting.

I actually think that this was probably one of the best, if not the best, episodes...

^ It actually was pretty good other than the problem with Ellis that I mentioned earlier.

It seems to be finding its footing...but does anyone care at this point?

Dev needs to just run off with the other woman already so we can get rid of him and I'm amazed that they keep dragging the teenage son in again and again.

UGLY CREEPY ELLIS NEEDS TO GO
He is a horrible actor and not cute enough to seduce
a homeless person..I am baffled on where they found this
person...he just has this goofy smile on his face and
I cant believe the access he is supposed to have to everyone
and everything...He is the only thing about this show
that makes me crazy....there are enough bad things happening
without adding a mini Joan Collins with bad curly sue hair
who cant act at all....Saw him in Hair in Philly a few years ago great show but I said to someone this kid stinks...I dont get it

Thurman is just a huge welcome relief on this show; not only is she finally bringing some real star power to the series; The Rebecca Duvall character is at last beginning to catalyst some real conflict in the writing. Better late then never, but its hard to believe its taken the series such a long time to find a pulse.

And for what its worth, I love that the Rebecca Duvall character is being used as the mouth piece for a lot of what we've been show is 'wrong' about musical they are writing. The character may be a pain in the ass, but everything she's said is true.

Not that I want to get into defending Smash again, but....

You don't think, perhaps, that we're seeing a "coming out" story for Ellis- he has no motivation for sleeping with that guy again except his own desires. So he had to lie to the girlfriend to see him again- and the whole thing misfired badly. In any case, give the show time to play out its plots. Re-read this thread and see how many times people have gone ape-**** over something that soon became absolutely logical.....

Something that's been bothering me: why is that NYT reporter always hanging around the Mayor's office? Shouldn't she be at her own office sometimes?

Then again, this is Smash...

I was browsing through Entertainment Weekly today and I found this. The website named Ellis as one of the 20 Most Annoying TV Characters.

"For the love of sweater vests, please kick Terrible Ellis (Jaime Cepero) off Broadway! This pathologically opportunistic, eavesdropping assistant hasn't met a door he doesn't like pressing his ear against. It'd be one thing if he were deliciously evil — or better yet, if he could sing — but this blank-faced lurker is one of the biggest flaws in a hugely flawed (yet weirdly addictive) series."

I agree that Uma is at least injecting some interest in the rehearsal/workshop scenes but the rest of the show is so leaden that I cringe my way through it. And, tellingly, I can't remember anyone's "name" on the show other than Ivy and Ellis! I want to see where the "movie star" plot goes (duh) but otherwise this show is just iresome. I keep watching so at least NBC should be happy but I may not make it back next season...

Its fun to see how long it takes an episode to get to the moment where Katharine McPhee tilts her head to the side, then moves her eyes sideways and up.

"but its hard to believe its taken the series such a long time to find a pulse."

Why, Michael? A lot of shows go through birthing pangs, I cringe at the first half dozen episodes of "Seinfield" when rerunning... I'm guessing you mean cause the show is about show biz? "Good Wife" didn't truly take off until its second season, as did "How I Met Your Mother"...

Now granted, a lot of shows seemingly, lately (especially sitcoms) have arrived full-formed, "Community", "Modern Family", "New Girl"...but did you ever SEE the first six episodes of the truly (now) remarkable "Parks and Recreation"?

SPOILER ALERT, SPOILER ALERT, SPOILER ALERT

I just saw in the blurb for "Publicity," the next episode, airing on 4/23, that Leo, the son, goes missing. Dare we hope he will remain lost for several episodes minimum?

At first I was going to preface that I don't want to sound like a fanboy, but whatevs, I'm not gonna qualify it because I'm not ashamed of it- I like this show. I get that some of you are hate-watching, and I've been there. I hate-watched Glee for a while until I realized that some people were just still going to continue to like it, despite how much I told them not to.

One thing I do think people seem to be forgetting is that it's only been on for half a season. Of course it's still finding its footing. Some of the nitpicking stuff people have complained about on this thread actually does work itself out in later episodes, like how wrong Uma is for Marilyn, or how Ivy couldn't have gotten away with what she pulled at her show without getting fired and then... well, Uma is wrong for Marilyn and Ivy gets fired.

Is that what it was like to be a Glee fan when it started? I don't know anymore, because I gave up hate watching it after about 13 episodes. And while I'll concede that Smash is a mess at times, I still think Glee is grotesque. And realize it's not an either/or, that you can like both or hate both, but still...

BorstolBoy wonders if anyone cares, and I guess I do. It's already been given a second season, so there's incentive to stay invested to me. I don't think that it's preposterous that it's taken - again - only half a season for it to start to find some footing is really that big of deal.

I just like it. Things actually happen on it.

Anyway, that's how I felt during the first ten minutes of the show last night and then we got that endless Karen number. That's the first number that I actually decided to fast forward through sine the series began, but then it was over. Thank god. It was cute to see Jackie D look all sweet at her, though and honestly even Kathareine MacPhee is less annoying to me than she was when it started.

I like the sort of detente between Ivy and Karen. Didn't Mister Midwest wish for that upthread?

I did wonder if it was gonna be a "Freaky Friday" episdoe when Brian D'arcy! James sat down, because his acting was sooo much like the son's in that scene. I thought he was awfully and totally in the wrong throughout the whole episode, but I kinda like him better that way. It's more interesting than him being the saintly husband.

And a tangent, does anyone but me think that slitchy Progressive insurance man is hot? He makes me wet.

Speaking of making me wet, the gay boys were finally starting to have some chemistry and then it's all Sam's all "I'm old-fashioned and I love Jesus and this sh*t is holy." That must be what it's like to sleep with Kristin Chenoweth.

I agree we could phase out the Dev and Leo stuff, but I do like the actor who plays Dev. And I liked the scene with Leo's guidance counselor. I liked the counselors reaction when Debbie let it all hang out. But yeah, I don't get why Frank has turned into a d-bag.

But at the end, I felt like through all the melodrama and shenanigans, Uma's character actually becomes a threat to Ivy and Karen.

I actually thought the way Thurman's character developed last night was the smartest, truest thing this show has done. Successful actresses can come with a reputation, and they can come off as flighty, flakey or diva-y...but in the end, they are pretty self-aware. I thought it was a rather brilliant turn.

Great post, Phyl.

I do have some issues with Tom's chorine being all Mr.-Jackson-If-You're-Nasty "Let's Wait a While." I mean, I could go with him deciding sex is sacred, blah blah blah, but his lecturing Tom about how Tom hsa been doing it wrong all along overlapped in an uncomfortable way for me with what Rachel Shukert points out is the continual slut-shaming of Ivy.

And if Eyelid wants to be resentful that Ivy is in a relationship with the director and she isn’t, well, I guess fair enough. But at least call it a relationship and stop insinuating that what Ivy and Derek have is some kind of sleazy, transactional sex contract as a way for the show to lazily cast aspersions on Ivy’s character that are never backed up by anything she actually does. It’s cheap, it’s inconsistent, and it’s frankly insulting that the only woman on the show in a healthy, sexually satisfying relationship is constantly denigrated as some kind of mercenary slut. Eyelid, I’m taking back your hypothetical freedom sock. Back to the Malfoy’s kitchen with you!

I am troubled by the thought that the writers have to come up with ways to avoid showing harmonious physical intimacy between members of the same sex by using the same Slut Shaming Escape Hatch.

Last night, the viewers saw a hot, open-mouth bi-racial man-on-man kiss. That's not a baby step.

Interesting. I hadn't really thought of it as her being slut-shamed. Is Eyelid Karen? I don't always read those recaps, so I can never keep the names straight. And I know that's where Cousin Debbie comes from, but I don't get that name.

I had issues with the way Sam said "My way is better," Namo.

Eyelid is the dancer in the ensemble that Karen bawled out in the hall and who later took her shopping.

Cousin Debbie's name comes from the fact that Rachel Shukert looks at Deborah Messing like that cousin you see periodically and think is so cool.
