NBC's SMASH, Season 2 -- Discussion

Posted: 5/4/13 at 8:43pmIt's funny that Julia has a line about exploiting Kyle's death when this whole plotline is an exploitation of Jonathan Larson's death.

Phyllis-
I was JUST mentioning that exact thought to my partner. Apparently it wasn't enough that they had to steal the whole workshop storyline - they had to go for the real life (and for many people still incredibly painful) storyline. Very frustrating.

To Kyle!
Gotta say, loved that zinger Karen got in for next weeks preview:
Ivy: See you on the red carpet!
Karen: Yeah, if you make it there.
Boom! Roasted.

Poor Kyle.
It seems only last week you were being chipper, then worried, then chipper, then worried. Weaving us all into your co-dependent spell.
We were the dependent ones, Kyle. We were.

And just as Julia was giving the explotation speech, a huge RENT poster loomed.
Jeeez, we get it.

Posted: 5/4/13 at 9:10pmI was hoping at one point he'd pop up and tell us that he jumped over the moon. But alas, there was no moon for Kyle. No stars, either. Just the dimming light of the young book writer of a sung through musical.

"Remember all those people who were insistent that Kyle didn't die?"
MEA CULPA!
Really he's better off. Why WOULD he want to live if he couldn't have beautiful, hunky, tortured Jimmy? I wish I were joking.
I just hope some drunken night Jimmy let Kyle suck him off.

“The Phenomenon” is such a bafflingly miscalculated piece of television that I’m hard-pressed to figure out exactly why anyone thought it would work. And yet as you watch it, it’s obvious that everybody involved thinks this is going to be some truly powerful stuff that will leave viewers weeping and Emmy voters filling out their ballots with Smash written down from top to bottom. “The Phenomenon” is so bad that I urge all of you to rush out, to find it on Hulu, to watch it right now, because it must be experienced. In fact, I paused it 10 minutes in on my screener to ask my wife to come watch it with me, because I needed to see it with her. It really needs to be shared, like a beloved family heirloom or a viral infection. “The Phenomenon” is such a misstep that it sort of loops back around to being entertaining again. Everything about it actively offended me, but I also wanted to watch it all over again.

That AV Club recap nails it, nails it, nails it.
Oh, and I actually own the shirt Jimmy was wearing during his PARENT TRAP via DRUGSTORE COWBOY moment. Which made me uncomfortable.

Posted: 5/4/13 at 9:27pmSo if Hit List is a Rent parallel does that mean Bombshell is Victor/Victoria?

Posted: 5/4/13 at 9:35pmGood to know I wasn't the only one who found it offensive. Everyone on Twitter seems to think it's especially brilliant. Don't get me started on Tepper.
