The final weekend results were $10.24 million, which surpassed Hamilton as the highest-grossing proshot (with the obvious caveat that Hamilton had been on Disney+ for five years already).
Still, that’s very impressive and obviously caught everyone off guard, prompting the additional showings. I agree with BentleyB that I strongly suspect the musical’s outperformance was driven by theater kids, which was consistent with my Sunday evening showing. (There was a downside to that for us, as one young woman in our row was vocal in her disapproval of one performer.) The fact that a version of the show is available to high schools now almost certainly didn’t hurt. I didn’t notice much publicity for the proshot, so that’s my best explanation.
