NYT: ‘Hadestown’ Hits Movie Theaters, and Theater to Stream in July — Page 2

#2 at the US box office yesterday with nearly $4m. Estimated to hit around $10m for the weekend. Impressive!

I'm wondering if anyone has picked up on any cut scenes or "dialogue" in the film vs. stage versions? I don't know if it was just that I was enjoying it so much, but it seemed to really move along quickly. Were there any cuts or was it just my imagination?

This was truly extraordinary - we'd seen the US tour production - and well, now I've actually seen the show.

Our theatre though, I think, had some heating issue because near the end of the film, right after the "gasp", they turned the misters on inside the theatre. I could feel the water on my face. At least, that's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

Absolutely sobbing during this!! Literally had to go to the damn bathroom and grab toilet paper. And many people were weeping around me too. Stunning pro-shot, this is a must see!!

I was confused on this also. The original announcement was 5 days, July 24-28. However on Fandango it's listed for 8 days, July 23-30.

While the advertising still reflects a 5-day run, per both my local AMC + the Deadline Hollywood blog, performances are going to continue through Wednesday / Thursday this week - they literally seem to be adding screens daily as the demand seems unexpected and the theatres are trying to keep up.

So definitely keep checking your preferred theatre if you're still seeking tickets / showtimes; the AMC Georgetown here in DC added two more perfs this evening.

And it's wonderful and wild that Hadestown on only 1,900+ screens is hitting near $10 million; the typical wide release is anywhere from 3,000 - 4,000. I'm sure part of the issue is it being peak summer movie season and a pure lack of available screens. (Going tonight and very excited / have tissues packed.)

It is also showing through Thursday the 30th here in Denver. 4 showings per day except tomorrow with 5 listed. On 2 screens.

“Conservative” in this context is clearly not referring to political belief and even if were it wouldn’t be bigotry.

We saw Hadestown the 2nd performance after opening night. Was great seeing the energy they cast has here.


My request to make Orpheus a … better character … went unanswered unfortunately. My biggest qualm with Hadestown is that role has always felt unfleshed out compared to everyone else.

I have started to wonder lately whether pro-shots / digital distribution could become the new preferred 'next step' for acclaimed/popular live theatre shows in any location, rather than the next step being trying to get a production happening in a specific physical location, Broadway or elsewhere. Potential wide audience reach, long timeframe to accumulate views/purchases...

Hadestown is one of my favourite shows from the last couple of decades, and I'd like to think it's just that 'good' shows' pro-shots succeed, but is there more to itin terms of what's been done formarketing / awareness-raising forfor this pro-shot?"

I think one of the reasons this is doing well is that numerous high schools across the country are doing it as their musical. The show was done by two of the high schools in our area in the last 4 months. The movie at noon today was full of high school kids and many of their parents. They actually applauded after several of the numbers, other than that they were very well behaved.

Aside from some bad theater behavior in our row, that was a terrific experience. The unique nature of Hadestown was smartly captured by the directorial choices. It managed to be an excellent capture of a theatrical production, a behind-the-scenes peek, and an unexpectedly cinematic film during ‘Doubt Comes In.’

There is a lot happening on stage, and the direction caught a great deal of things I hadn’t noticed or had forgotten. I thought all of the performers came off well, though Patrick Page (turning his injury into an unexpected strength) and Amber Gray were particularly strong. I am going to stick up for Reeve Carney. The proshot did an excellent job of capturing his unexpected strength in the second act, then illustrating how Hades could mess with Orpheus’ head by tapping into his own insecurities.

I am certainly pleased to see Andre De Shields’ performance captured in all its glory. There appeared to be a great deal of affection, and perhaps even a bit of melancholy, between the actors.

Some other awards bodies, such as Golden Globes, have their own rulesthough (Hamiltongot two Globe nominations in the film musical/comedy categories when it was released on D+). But Oscar is completely out of the question."

Also just saw on Deadline that they revised *up* the Hadestown weekend box office - it has now surpassed Hamilton as the #1 theatre pro shot release and was the #3 film domestically this weekend!

No wonder they're continuing to extend it (and how wonderful that 'repeat viewings' are specifically called out as a driver). I simply need to see it a second time, I guess.. :-)

Observation said: "I would love for the trend of filming in front of a live audience to continue. It's so interesting to me, from what I gather, there's a logistical/financial reason as to why we're seeing these shows being filmed in London, it is just a nightmare and so expensive to film in NYC."

Don’t forget though, we’re also getting the pro-shot of SIX featuring the OG West End queens in movie theaters on August 14th…might as well make it a double feature while we’re at it I guess
