The co-creators of Hedwig, along with their producers, have made extremely smart decisions in bringing the property to Broadway. They have devoted a lot of time and energy to it. It's evident that they are hands-on.
I didn't see Criss in How to Succeed, so I can't say one way or the other how I think he'll be as Hedwig. But if the co-creators feel he's right for the job, I will at least give him a listen! I too would love to see Cerveris in it, but I hope he'll be busy with Fun Home for a nice long run.
I get that Darren is way too young. But I wonder if that will be that evident given the hair ,costume and make-up. As for his vocal abilities, I appreciate it is a stretch. He is as someone said more indie-pop then rock/punk. I haven't ever seen this show as it has been only mounted once where I live and I missed it, but isn't Hedwig miked and or singing into a microphone most of the time. Anyway it is a weird choice. I guess they think he will bring butts in seats and a younger audience. We will see. I have only seen youtube clips of him in How to Succeed. And I actually thought he was OK. I preferred Radcliffe. But he wasn't horrible. Just a bit limited. But I do think he handled the character and dancing quite well.
It will be a stretch vocally, not least because of the length of this run. He did only 3 weeks with How To Succeed and there were reports of noticeable strain. I also wonder if he can bring across the poignancy in the story.
I think Darren Criss is very talented but he seems wrong for this role. His voice imo is too silky. Heard he was weak in H2$ but then again I never saw it myself and he could have improved by then. Either way, it'll get a lot of fangirls to see the show....
He might be good ... but having seen him in How to Succeed, I won't bother finding out. Seems like casting to attract the brain dead and rude Glee crowd. He might have been ok in H2$, but his "fans" made the night at the theatre intolerable.
I've heard so many accounts of his fans having such poor theatre etiquette. Why is this? A lot of celebrities have been on broadway and though they each have their fair share of ill-mannered followers, Darren Criss' seem to be VERY consistent!
^ Probably because most are teenage girls- and as South Park taught us, when one girl starts screaming, it gets a bunch more screaming and making noise.
^^ They treated it like a Starkid gig (Starkid is his college buddies' theater company that did the Harry Potter musical spoofs which made him internet-famous). But so did he - one night some of his buddies came to the show, he prodded his fans on twitter to do a Starkid singalong at the stage door, and when the fans freaked out, the NYPD intervened, took him back inside the theater until they could contain the crowd. Traffic in the street was a mess. People weren't impressed.
Darren can't even hold a note. How the **** did he get a role on broadway? I know he was in How To Succeed but he even sucked in that. Overrated **** stain with a following from the gay people who loved him from glee.
