That's a fair point. It's not really about the source upon which a musical is based, but rather about how the adaptation is done. The unfortunate thing is that many musicals based on movies, particularly movies with a high popular currency, seem to be something of a rush job, preferring to trade on a marketable name rather than expert craftsmanship and artistry. However, there are musicals based on films that are simply fantastic; similarly, there are musicals based on other sources that are awful.

I think the criticism about originality has less to do with the fact that there is some kind of source material involved and more to do with a lack of an orginal approach that is organic to the material being adapted and created.
