Ooh, yay for TRIBES! It's a solid production of an great new play... but the supporting awards are mixed up. The entire cast is exceptional -- really, exceptional in the truest sense of the word, one of the best ensembles going in NYC right now -- but if I were forced to single people out, those supporting noms should go to Will Brill and Susan Pourfar rather than Jeff Perry and Mare Winningham (particularly Winningham, who's a great bedrock for the show, but it's a role she could do great in her sleep). Brill and Poufar are doing work, from their quietest moments to their flashiest, that's quite literally awesome. Anyway, glad to see. This show needs a thread, or, if it already has one, a more visible one.
Everyone should make a point to go see it.
And yay for the scenic nod for THE SELECT, a show that I loved but no one else seemed to.

OMG! So happy for Molly Ranson and Marin Mazzie...but I think both should have been nominated for Lead Actress opposed to Mazzie as Featured.

THE SHAGGS?????
I know it has no chance of winning, but I LOOOOOOOVED "Shaggs." It was such a great experience, and I wish it was recorded at least.

Ripped Man: i've never disagreed with your picks and pans before, but i thought the Shaggs was torture! i loved the conceit of switching between how the dad thought the band sounded and how they actually sounded -- kudos to the director for the idea, and a talented trio for the execution -- but overall i thought the play was a HUGE disappointment. i just never found myself caring about anybody ... especially the father. it's not like he provoked a strong negative reaction, either; i just thought, well there's another loser -- they could have been random strangers in the check-out at gristedes.
also, from talking to people @ playwrights, i think they got a lot of negative feedback from their subscribers about it, too.
oh, well ...
Strange that Tribes wasn't nominated for Best Play itself, though.
"Brill and Poufar are doing work, from their quietest moments to their flashiest, that's quite literally awesome."
I could not agree more. This is a fantastic show that I'm itching to go see again.

I liked The Shaggs. It was certainly superior to some of the unspeakable items nominated. But in their case, nothing could be inferior.
Good producing strategy by Once. Open off-Broadway and transfer to Broadway in the same season. Then you get to scoop up double the amount of awards, each helping to assure future awards, and of course, creating super hype for business.

The best new musical, Lucky Guy, and the best new play, Rx, weren't even nominated.
Figures.
These awards--- Tonys, Obies, Pulitzers, Drama Critics.... Hopeless, the whole lot of them.
After Eight: I was with you until you said Lucky Guy was the best new music. Um... it was an enjoyable piece of candy, but nothing great.
The Shaggs, though not for everyone, had some really great moments. The direction was flawless. The physical production was at times beautiful. The music was memorable. I loved the "Don't Say Nothing Mean About My Dad" song. I thought the acting was brilliant. It sucks it didn't find an audience, but given the work that Playwrights normally does - sitcom-y type plays - I'm not surprised their audience didn't like it.

Ripped Man,
You're right. Candy it was.
But if candy is the best thing served, then that's the best.
But I'm glad we agree about The Shaggs. Too bad it wasn't recorded.
So glad Mary Testa and Queen of the Mist was recognized. It was a masterful performance by a highly skilled actress. I did enjoy the show, as well. I would love to see it move and develop further.
Pulling for Mary Testa! Such an interesting show.
Pleased to see Testa and Queen of the Mist remembered. That show has stuck with me many months after. So looking forward to the cast recording.
Pleased to see Molly & Marin grabbing nominations, in an otherwise dull production.
Was HOW I LEARNED TO DRIVE ineligible? I could be asking a completely stupid question, but I thought it'd at least pick up a couple of nods.
How is it ineligible? It opened awhile ago?
And don't worry After Eight. It was Lucky Guy was still running I'm sure I'd go back to see Massey.
Do we think Roundabout might take Sons of Prophet to B'way after it winning? I can't imagine it wouldn't fit nicely into the American Airlines.
The problem with that is the fact that all the Roundabout subscribers have already seen it.
There were commercial producers who had raised the money for a transfer back in November, but there weren't any theaters available.
