Ooh, yay for TRIBES! It's a solid production of an great new play... but the supporting awards are mixed up. The entire cast is exceptional -- really, exceptional in the truest sense of the word, one of the best ensembles going in NYC right now -- but if I were forced to single people out, those supporting noms should go to Will Brill and Susan Pourfar rather than Jeff Perry and Mare Winningham (particularly Winningham, who's a great bedrock for the show, but it's a role she could do great in her sleep). Brill and Poufar are doing work, from their quietest moments to their flashiest, that's quite literally awesome. Anyway, glad to see. This show needs a thread, or, if it already has one, a more visible one.
Everyone should make a point to go see it.
And yay for the scenic nod for THE SELECT, a show that I loved but no one else seemed to.

Ripped Man: i've never disagreed with your picks and pans before, but i thought the Shaggs was torture! i loved the conceit of switching between how the dad thought the band sounded and how they actually sounded -- kudos to the director for the idea, and a talented trio for the execution -- but overall i thought the play was a HUGE disappointment. i just never found myself caring about anybody ... especially the father. it's not like he provoked a strong negative reaction, either; i just thought, well there's another loser -- they could have been random strangers in the check-out at gristedes.
also, from talking to people @ playwrights, i think they got a lot of negative feedback from their subscribers about it, too.
I liked The Shaggs. It was certainly superior to some of the unspeakable items nominated. But in their case, nothing could be inferior.
Good producing strategy by Once. Open off-Broadway and transfer to Broadway in the same season. Then you get to scoop up double the amount of awards, each helping to assure future awards, and of course, creating super hype for business.
After Eight: I was with you until you said Lucky Guy was the best new music. Um... it was an enjoyable piece of candy, but nothing great.
The Shaggs, though not for everyone, had some really great moments. The direction was flawless. The physical production was at times beautiful. The music was memorable. I loved the "Don't Say Nothing Mean About My Dad" song. I thought the acting was brilliant. It sucks it didn't find an audience, but given the work that Playwrights normally does - sitcom-y type plays - I'm not surprised their audience didn't like it.
So glad Mary Testa and Queen of the Mist was recognized. It was a masterful performance by a highly skilled actress. I did enjoy the show, as well. I would love to see it move and develop further.
Pleased to see Molly & Marin grabbing nominations, in an otherwise dull production.
