On with the Sondheim revivals

It appears as of late we have been blessed with a wealth of Sondheim revivals (assassins, into the woods, company) and rumoured Sweeney.

I’m curious which others we’d like to see revived in the near future.  Of course the revival of little night music with Julie andrews and cate Blanchett tops my list.  But I’d also love to see Forum. I not know who should star. A show I’ve never seen at all. Gypsy has been almost 15 years since the last revival.

Well, I’m biased, because it’s my goal to someday see all of his show live onstage. I’ve gotten most of them, even several of the most obscure ones. But I’m still missing Forum, Do I Hear A Waltz, Passion, and Gypsy. The latter two had NYC revivals fairly recently, but I just wasn’t around for them. Ironically there was a production of Do I Hear a Waltz in San Francisco soon after I moved from there to NYC. And Forum has had a few regional productions, but none that I’ve been able to make it to. That one feels the most viable for a major revival.

James Corden will be available.

I'd love to see Carmen Cusack as Fosca in Passion at LCT.

At least two seem on the horizon.  My preferences:

1.  A Funny Thing.  Missed Nathan Lane; last saw it with Phil Silvers 50 years ago and loved it.  Always hated the movie.

2.  ALNM.  I have seen it only once in the last decade, in a production at the Huntington Theatre in Boston.

3.  Sweeney.  Last saw it with Lupone and Cerveris.  Too much time has passes.

4.  Merrily.  I saw the Friedman production in Boston and loved it, after hating the original production.

of course, #1 would be a great production of Follies, which I have almost given up hope for; was too spoiled by the original production.

If I were a betting man, I’d put money on “Forum” and “Gypsy” in the next couple of years but please God keep Corden away. From both.

Audra McDonald and Joshua Henry in PASSION. (at Encores or a Broadway nonprofit...)

After seeing WHISTLE at Carnegie Hall, I really do think it could work with a polish to the book, an absurdist director, and a game cast. Maybe someone like Matthew Warchus or Tina Landau.

Oh yes please to a worthy Follies.
Years ago I had wished they did, even for a benefit a A list Follies

Joan Rivers, Phyllis Diller, Cher, Tina

or a Broadway legend run. Bernadette (yes I know the last one had her) Patti. Carol Channing, Kristin, Audra, Donna…

Night Music with Anika Noni Rose as Desiree

Audra in Passion is much more exciting to me than the rumoured Gypsy that Rudin wanted to do with her.

I'd really love a Heather Headley as Mama Rose moment, but that would likely be something regional

I fear Gaga would bring too much camp to Passion. That show would crumble with camp.

Meryl Streep on the other hand...?

I came here to say "Put on Pacific Overtures, you cowards."  (I know the Signature DC is putting it on next year, but one can dream of a Broadway Pacific Overtures revival.)

She is far too old and couldn’t sing it. With the right director, Gaga would be stupendous.

Fosca will always be a little camp.

It is funny how when you've seen these shows many times, particularly the most recent revivals, it can feel a bit as if they have not been absent from Broadway or off-Broadway stages for very long when it has indeed been around 10 years or more for some of them.

It's time for a FORUM revival.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

I think Whistle will probably be best as an Encores type of production.  I just don’t see it (or Passion) ever appealing to a large enough audience unless some.  I think the score is very good, but even here a couple of those songs are interminably long.  Half way through, I hit the skip button.

How about a stage adaptation of EVENING PRIMROSE with additional songs from the Sondheim trunk?

Pre-banish, Rudin was circling a revival of A Little Night Music in the works with Toni Colette and Julie Andrews. And I would have sold my arm to be there.

Oh, I've been waiting for this post! What the world really needs is a great Follies revival. Maybe in a few years with Kelli O'Hara, Laura Benanti (we know they both want to do it so let's get on with it already!), Audra, Patina Miller, Ruthie Ann Miles & Patti if she'll come out of retirement. It'll need a massive budget to work, though, so it's just wishful thinking for now.

& I'm still hoping that someday, somewhere, Christine Baranski will get an official full run as Mrs. Lovett. (I'd love if it was in NYC but I am willing to travel anywhere to see this.)

My dream revival is Follies on the Vivian Beaumont stage, directed by Bartlett Sher with Laura Benanti and Norm Lewis as Phyllis/Ben and Kelli O'Hara and Norbert Leo Butz as Sally/Buddy. Jane Krakowski as Carlotta. Patti Lupone as Hattie. Throw in some stage legends like Donna McKechnie, Charlotte d'Amboise, Jennifer Holiday in the smaller roles. Spend an insane amount of money and really make it something special
