Paradise Square will produce an original Broadway cast recording. The cast and Broadway orchestra will gather at Power Station at BerkleeNYC for four days of sessions this week and next. The recording will have a digital release in May and a physical release this summer.

The cast cannot wear masks to record, and how would that help if they are unmasked on stage anyway? The crew is another matter and of course in the studio more distancing and separation is possible.
The bigger question to me is funding. Someone has a lot of money to burn and I don't think Garth has been able to defraud enough people to finance it himself.

Mr. Drabinsky, with some exceptions, self distributes and produces to control the rights. For Showboat, he would pair the CD with bbq sauce and southern recipe cookbook.

And now there is another reason: the usual suspects won't get within a 10 foot pole of him. When this show is debriefed, people are going to be surprised how much that factor has shaped the show.

FWIW, Mrs. Doubtfire did not announce a label either. Is it common in the theatre for a show to record it independently without a label and then sell it to the label? (like negative pickup of an independent film)

More like give it to the label.
Recordings of shows that are not independently attractive and thus recorded on spec by the production have no value. In this case, no one is gonna want it. You will note, also, that the digital release will be quick with a promised followup that may never happen. One can't distribute without a distributor, although one can of course pop the recording onto Spotify et al, which will not provide enough revenue to take the cast and crew out for lunch at Shake Shack.
I heard it was recorded but some vendors are still owed money on getting it mixed and released. They should have just dropped a single on spotify and itunes, a cast album will sell 125 units max.
For what it's worth, I ran into / spoke with Nathan Tysen outside Radio City last night, and he told me the Paradise Square OBCR will release "late summer."
I will start my usual cast album thread when the time is right.

The song showcases a great singing artist but even in the context of the show isn’t an especially well wrought number. The show is repetitive and presentational - plot points announced or sung - and too rarely dramatized. So when the moment arrives we’re hungry for a character to take stage and make us feel something. She does, and we do. She’s stunning and earned her Tony. But the song is as much a seized performance opportunity as a satisfying piece of musical theater. If the show around it were better, the production might have a better shot.
