StickToPriest, there are some people who dislike her and say she has no talent.
To dislike her is one thing, but to write off a stellar 30 year career in the theatre when most people can't get 1 year out of theatre, is to give your opinion more power than it is actually worth.
And FlyingMonkey says SHE has an ego. Good God.

Is it possible that Ms. LuPone does things sometimes where the result is She Makes Herself A Target?
That Tony speech where she cited those 29 years keeps floating back into my awareness; that's a long time for someone like Ms. L. to deal with being a nobody (or a "used-to-be" [not "has-been"]) or a where-is-she-now?...
I was a bit surprised that, given the chance to be spectacular 8-shows-a-week, she reportedly gave many performances that didn't rise to the level of the standard she set for herself (and all of us, when you think about it).
But she sure has managed to get us all talking about her again, which I would imagine, thrills her.
who cares?
Patti will be more successful than 99% of the posters (including myself) on this board.
Kudos to her! GO PATTI!!!

Personally, I don't think she is. MANY MANY people agree with me and have for 30 years.
Some don't.
THAT'S showbiz and live theatre and Broadway and opinion.
One word: SUBJECTIVE.
MANY MANY people agree with me and have for 30 years.
Yeah, she's bigger than Jesus!
Most people don't even know who Patti LuPone is outside of the theatre world and/or the gay bear club.
But...but...MANY MANY people agree she's not overrated!
This tired old topic again?!! It's like some sick obsession with you people. Patti LuPone this, Patti LuPone that. MOVE THE FVCK ON.
Marquise--it's not the Patti lovers who start all these threads.
It's the weirdly obsessed and compulsive Patti Haters.
The very title of this thread is proof of the OP's troll status: It's not a question that starts a discussion; it's a question that hopes to start an argument.
Overrated by WHOM? Her fans? Any performer is rated higher by fans than by nonfans. That's obvious?
Overrated by critics? Ghat could only be true when she is praised.
Overrated by...WHOM?
And why do the Patti Haters feel that have to argue their points with insults and personal invective? WHy do they feel they have to make up false stories and tell lies?
Bizarre.
And Lady D...what exactly do you mean by "she reportedly gave many performances that didn't rise to the level of the standard she set for herself"? Reportedly by WHOM? The same old boring Patti Haters who come on to these threads with their made-up stories? You're taking their words as true?
Come now. I hold YOU to a higher standard than that.
PalJoey...one of my least favorite homos. Stop rallying for Patti, please. Behind your lies is a sad lonely person and I know that much is true.
He is "rallying for Patti" because he appreciates her as a performer! I don't understand what's wrong with that.
We all have our favorite actors and shows. You wouldn't be a member of BWW if you didn't. And we all have our biases and our opinions. It's nothing to get upset about.
Oh please, he embraces her and calls me (and others) liars when we mention facts about her behavior. He is almost as nutty as Patti, Mandy, and Betty...or maybe nuttier!
The monkey's lies were proven to be untrue.
His insults directed toward me are silly and, by now, predictable.
My story was true, like it or not. You can assume that they were proven to be false because you think you are a big-shot with all the info on your favorite post-op, but we all know how Patti is and how she acts.
If I'm ever in the area "lets do lunch..."
Your story was dismissed as false by all except your collaborators, including the editors of New York Magazine.
Now stamp your feet and hold your breath and call me any other names you wish.
I love me some Patti just as much as the next gay but some of you on this board repetitively obsess, dissect, over-analyze this woman TO DEATH!
Seriously seek some help 'cause y'all just gonna make me sick of her.
And for all you Patti naysayers, the accolades, praise that she's received over the years as well as the numerous awards that line her mantle beg to differ with you.
Marquise, your reading Patti fans threads would really cause you to change your opinion of her?
Really?
I think PJ's right; it wasn't a real question the OP posed. All it could really mean is "I don't like LuPone as much as a bunch of people seem to, and that annoys me."
No it wouldn't change my opinion of her. It's just that must she be discussed every single day, every single hour on this board?
I'm surprised there hasn't been a "Does Patti Sleep on her back or her stomach?" thread.
I'll throw this out there...
Based on these productions I've personally seen Patti perform listed in chronological order:
Master Class (twice on Broadway)
Matters of the Heart (Donmar)
Passion (Ravinia)
Anyone Can Whistle (Ravinia)
Gypsy (Ravinia)
I do not consider her underrated. From the first time I saw her in Master Class, I got it. I never witnessed her losing it or even breaking character on stage, so I won't speak about that. I only saw brilliant performances rich in presence, talent and charisma.
People, please..
Patti is so obviously underrated. I mean, what's up with her lead actress roles to tony wins ratio?
What's that? Tony wins are overrated?
Yeah, I thought so.
"It's just that must she be discussed every single day, every single hour on this board?"
I guess it wouldn't be helpful to say that you don't have to click on threads that appear to be about her, would it?
What I'm about to say is probably utter BS, but I'll give it a shot. It seems to me that we've lived through a decade or more that embraced two of my least favorite things: apathy and "irony." (And yes, those are ironic quotes.) And it seems that genuine passion and enthusiasm (for LuPone, for Obama, just to take two unrelated examples) offends some people or makes them uncomfortable.
I agree it can get overwhelming, and I personally can be put off by people who carry on about one thing ad nauseum when it's clear that's the only thing they know (for example, someone who's only seen "Spamalot" avowing that "Spamalot" is the bestest musical ever).
But in a world where people are famous for doing nothing at all, I don't see the point in slamming a woman who has devoted 40-some years to her craft.
If she doesn't do it for you, leave her alone. But why begrudge others the pleasure her work gives them?

And I say "Bravo!" to Reginald Tresilian.
The point, Reginald Tresilian, is double standards.
It's all fine and dandy when Patti gets mentioned ad nauseum or when it's Lupwn this Lupwn that half the time, but each time Wicked gets mentioned, it's like O Heavens forfend!
Not everyone loves Lupone, nor should they have to.
