Well she has now hit gay.com! They have posted that audio clip over there on their news page along with a slightly lame poll for the Best Broadway Show ever.

I couldn't agree with you more, A Fleur.

If I didn't like "Wicked" (and I do), it would simply never occur to me to click on a thread about it in the first place, much less take the time to sh!t on it. Unless I had some personal vendetta--like Stephen Schwartz dumped me. (He didn't.)

But either way, if you object to people doing it to "Wicked," surely you wouldn't want to do it to LuPone.

I agree it can get overwhelming, and I personally can be put off by people who carry on about one thing ad nauseum when it's clear that's the only thing they know (for example, someone who's only seen "Spamalot" avwoing that "Spamalot" is the bestest musical ever).

That reminds me of the time I was literally slapped across the face in a bar because I said I was not a Judy Garland fan. I like her, especially her early work, and find her life and career intriguing, but I'm not a "fan". I do get offended when I'm told that as a gay man, I have an obligation to be obsessed with gay-approved celebrities and/or shows.

But in a world where people are famous for doing nothing at all, I don't see the point in slamming a woman who has devoted 40-some years to her craft.

Absolutely.

If she doesn't do it for you, leave her alone. But why begrudge others the pleasure her work gives them?

Because it makes you look subversive, cool and highly intellectual. Doi! The unspoken rules of the BWW message board are to hate Wicked, all works by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Frank Wildhorn, Rent, and most recently, Patti LuPone. She was added to the list in 2007. Those are the biggies, anyway. You have to be one of the cool kids to receive the latest texts. It's like Gossip Girl for BWW. But don't tell anyone.

Well, Reginald, I don't object to people discussing Wicked objectively, just to people who slam Wicked pointlessly. Comments like "Are we still on this topic?" "We have been discussing this for years" annoy me. New people are joining BWW every single day, and want to discuss musicals, so deal with it.

I don't see why we can't discuss whether Lupone is overrated objectively either. The OP conceded she had talent, but merely questioned if it was her reputation that precedes her for her performance in Gypsy.

Well, that's true to some extent, but this was put down as Patti bashing immediately.

I have to agree with the sentiment that almost all actors are overrated by their fans. and I will say that although I am very much a Patti fan, I don't think she's always perfect or right. I think that she is always a pleasure to watch, even when I don't like artistic choices she's made.

It seems to me that we've lived through a decade or more that embraced two of my least favorite things: apathy and "irony." (And yes, those are ironic quotes.) And it seems that genuine passion and enthusiasm (for LuPone, for Obama, just to take two unrelated examples) offends some people or makes them uncomfortable.
I think this is so true, Reginald. The way I originally read that sentence was that people WITH genuine passion and enthusiasm, like LuPone or Obama offends people. And I think that is also true.

I think sometimes people can't speak objectively about things when they have strong feelings, either way. I know I personally have a tough time being objective, so I often try not to let myself get involved in objective conversations where I have a strong opinion. (I'm not always successful)

-"No dear, what's REALLY overrated is the over usage of the 'newbie' and 'sockpuppet' assumption every time someone has a differing opinion to yours."

Well "dear" (an overused expression, especially affected and vapid when used to address someone you don't know and have never talked with before) as to my "sockpuppet" (another overused and particularly lazy way to assault someone) assumption, please note that I expressed NO OPINION as to the whether or not the original poster's comment was valid - simply that starting this thread (gee, must be the first one ever on this subject, right?)seems very troll-like.

A Fleur, I agree with you. I don't know what you're asking me to deal with. I'm not even quite sure what we're supposingly disagreeing about.

I generally find less interesting hearing what people hate than hearing what they love.

I love Patti. It is true that I think she occasionally does not act in the most professional manner, and she does not always have the greatest diction while singing, but the girl can act. She has great comic timing and clearly loves what she is doing on stage.

Many actors have obsessed fans, and it seems that Broadway fans get the most obsessed for some reason, possibly because Broadway fans actually get to see these people and talk to these people, and they all hold their favorites in high regard. To some this can make an actor appear overrated if you are not obsessed with them, but to most people, they are just actors. Patti is neither over nor underrated, but she does have a small fanbase that believes she is the end all be all of theatre, and that's ok.

Dare I say...yes she is totally over rated. She ruined the revival of Gypsy. Not that it too much to ruin this dreadful version of america's greatest musical. Anyway...

She performed in bedroom slippers. I dont pay $120 to see Evita as Rose clomp around in bedroom slippers.

She carried a fake dog. Get a life! Carry a real dog like all the other Roses did.

She played the end of the show in the opening of the show.

She "played the role of Mama Rose as though she were eating a live lobster" Now you can argue that Michael Musto meant that to be a complement, but i dont wanna see anyone eat a live lobster. Especially if they are playing the lead role in my favorite musical.

I could go on an on

But you have all heard this from me before.

Thank you, whoever started this thread, for letting me rant on this overrated performer once again.

Oh Reginald, I do agree with you. I certainly wasn't asking you to deal with anything; that wasn't directed at you. I was just pointing out how an objective discussion about the more popular musicals like say Wicked or Spring Awakening or Legally Blonde perhaps, would suddenly go off tangent with some uncalled-for comments like "Are we still talking about it?" and "What a boring issue" and so on. This pisses me because there are new people joining BWW everyday and have the right to discuss whatever the hell they want, be it Wicked or Lupone, without being heckled.

"I generally find less interesting hearing what people hate than hearing what they love."
- Hear, hear. I share your sentiments but I also take issue with people who put down other people who don't share their same love for a performer/musical.

I don't disagree with you Reginald. Au contra ire, I find you to be a more objective person than most on this board.

Bertandrew are you sarcastically joking? I mean most of your complaints are ridiculous and not even in Patti's control.

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

Reginald: I completely disagree. It's fine to be passionate about someone, but I find that, when it gets to a certain level, it simply becomes creepy. People put said person on a pedestal and, no matter what this person does, it's great. I don't want to turn this into a political thread, but, since you brought it up, Obama's cult of personality terrifies me, and I have said that many times. These people are only human and they should be treated as such.

I personally don't like Patti's singing; I know that she's a good singer, her voice just doesn't appeal to me. And I don't like that her fans will let her get away with anything that she does. I don't think that even being one of the biggest names in musical theatre excuses all of the behaviors from her that we've heard about.

to all those who called me a troll: sorry that as a new member, i'm trying to start interesting conversation... this thread is only seen as controversial by some, because they obsess over Patti Lupone. there's nothing controversial about it. it would be as if discussing will smith is an overrated screen actor. the conversation will only become controversial if there's people who obsess over Will on the board.

in response to being over rated by whom- i'm mainly talking about the general public and her fans, and occasionally the press. for example- many press outlets depicted her as doing the right thing for stopping a performance of Gyspy over a cell phone. I tend to disagree... is the press over-rating her by making out bursts acceptable?
