Even if the author is technically eligible, I don't think Prince Faggot factors in here. The Pulitzer Prize for Drama is specifically for a work that deals with American life. This play is specifically exploring a fictionalized version of the British royal family. Now one can surely make the argument that the themes are universally queer, intentionally so, and therefore we don't need to apply the messages of the play only to British culture. And of course it does include the autobiographical portions of the largely American cast, which relates the themes back to American experiences. Still the action is not set in the US and the characters are not American. So I think ultimately it gets left off this list.
That being said the Pulitzer committee is TINY. Four people I believe? (which is why we often get surprise, singular choices in the lineup). So it really only takes two jurors to think a play is "American enough" to skirt that specific qualification. I hope Liberation wins. I expect Meet the Cartozians to be there as well. Perhaps The Antiquities or Caroline fills out the slate?

I'm not invested one way or another in Prince Faggot -- I didn't love the play -- and I don't want to be pedantic, but this isn't accurate. The criteria for the Pulitzer states the play should "preferably" be of original source material and about about American life. The key word here is "preferably." There have been adaptations that have won or been finalists, and there have been multiple winners and finalists that are not about America. Off the top of my head: Ruined, English, Selling Kabul, I Am My Own Wife, Old Wicked Songs, M. Butterfly, The Diary of Anne Frank.

I liked Liberation but I loved Meet the Cartozians. I can’t wait to see it again next March at the Huntington in Boston.

Meet the Cartozians is totally worthy of a win. I think Liberation has more momentum behind it but I think Meet the Cartozians was just brilliant & I don’t know how it didn’t gain more traction here in NYC. I was stunned by the layers that Monohan tries to pull apart in this play!

Stunned is a great description. Monahon gives us so much to chew on. It’s just so rich. That’s why I need to revisit.

A wonderful group of great work recognized this year IMO and I'm over the moon for Bess Wohl and Liberation! Even before today's announcement, I've had a strong hunch that there will be more Tony nominations than we expect for it tomorrow esp with the nominators recent trend of recognizing work from early in the season.
Am curious if Bowl or Cartozians might get an uptown transfer, either for an encore run at a Studio Seaview type venuce or to one of the major non-profits in an upcoming season (presuming next season's programming is pretty met set for 26-27?)

I’m predicting it gets 7 nominations:
Best Play
Lead Actress
Direction of a Play
Featured Actress
Lighting Design
Costume Design
Set Design

That's 100% definitely the ballpark number I had in mind.
And this spec will be more relevant at this time tomorrow --- but I wouldn't at all count out Whitney White winning her first Tony. Her body of work is lengthy and largely wonderful (Jaja's African Hair Braiding remains one of my favorite recent productions at MTC.)
Til tomorrow....! :-)

Bowl EP? If the Pulitzer gave out awards for scenic design, I could see this being mentioned. But for Drama?
No. Big no.

Very much disagree. It's an excellent play and maybe just not for you. A lot is going on, but it's conversing with gender, race and love in a very modern way especially for black men.

your racism is showing, it is an incrediably well written form breaking play, particuarly the PAGES long monologue by one character towards the end and how it incoporated rap music and the structuring of the "album tracks"
also whomever hoped for BOWL EP to get a remount, doubtful...the scenic requirements are EXPENSIVE, there is a reason its premiere was co-pro'ed by three different nyc theater companies.
Cartozians though...2ST would be smart to program it into the Hayes and I suspect they were waiting on the Pulitizer announcement to finalize their next season and announce it

I loved the show especially the cast and direction but I agree it shouldn't win for drama, but I felt very lucky to see it. Nazareth Hassan is an incredible artist and I look forward to seeing his work more often.

I loved Practice (hope that boring guy doesn't call me racist again for saying that!)
