So apparently she's in the audience of HAIRSPRAY tonight...and not that this means anything, but what a fun star-turn that would be to have her either on Bway or in the film doing Motormouth!
If she did it, it would be for the film, not the Broadway production. Isn't she a tad young for the role?
She does look a bit younger to play the role. But in a thread a couple days ago, her name was listed as being in the cast, along with John Travolta, Billy Crystal and Meryl Streep.
Patti LaBelle should be playing Motormouth in the movie, not Latifah.
i heard sharon wilkins (ASU) was in the audience a few weeks ago and i would LOVE to see her as motormouth. and also i think fredi walker (RENT) would be awesome in the role. but ,IMO, mary bond will always own that role.
Oueen Latifah sells more cinema seats than Labelle, sad but honest.
Patti Labelle would be great as Motormouth and she is the right age. She is a "name", but maybe not big enough.
I agree jimmirae, but I think that she is never going to be able to reprise that role. When I heard of Queen Latifah and this my thoughts were "What? Oh that's interesting..." She doesn't seem like the right person for this part, but maybe she will surprise us.

Queen Latifah can sing, but I doubt she can pull the vocals as Mabel. It is typical of Hollywood to put famous names to sell a movie and totally ignore how the original character was created.
35 is too young to be logical.
I know they can age people with makeup but I'm not exactly sure on this one.
It was released with the one casting announcment that she might do the role. For the film, along with John Travolta as Edna and Billy Crystal as Wilbur.
Way to wreck Edna's character.
Yes, Latifah can sing but she can't sing to level needed to do what is required of Motormouth. I think that it would be a shame to cast her in this role when there are much better singers suited for the part (like Patti or even Aretha) but knowing how hollywood works, she will probably get it.
I would rather see Felicia Fields in that role.
(Sophia, Color Purple) a powerhouse.
She would be the perfect person for the role.
Or Aretha.
There is no justice in the World. If Harvey is excluded, life is so unfair. And people can be stupid.
HARVEY IS EDNA.

Since Darlene Love is already playing her, and is a "name", why not just cast her in the movie?
Darlene Love is wonderful in the role.
I would love to see Felicia Fields in that role.
Watch out for Fields. The woman is a powerhouse.
Personally though when I think of the role I think of Mary Bond Davis. She is faboo.
I love Miss Love and Miss Davis, But they aren't even thinking about them for the role. I love Patti LaBelle so much too but it ain't gonna happen.
As was sung in a great song:
"All they really want is repetition all they really like is what they know"
They (America, and the World at large - This includes "Middle America") do not know from Darlene Love or Mary Bond Davis. Even Patti LaBelle most likely is not a hot spot on tour there. Queen Latifah they know, If nothing else, from her TV show and her film success. She will play the part.
Same with the rest mentioned, Travolta they will shell out $$$ to just see WHAT he looks like in drag, Harvey - If they were interested they have already seen in drag. Billy Crystal is known from films & TV (OSCARS?) and they know Meryl Streep too.
I know it is sad but is the ugly truth. If they desire this musical to have a chance - they HAVE to give them something to recognize, and that is these Stars. They will help it - even in Middle America - Their pull will be of help.
I'd LOVE to see LaBelle as Motormouth, But highly unlikely, and Latifah wasn't going to see "Hairspray" just to have fun - Trust me!
I still wish I could find that casting call link, It would have made more sense.
Too bad it is all about integration, Fantasis would have been great on film. TV stuff is known in middle america. As much as I dislike AM/Idol, They know that stuff or Hudson would have never had a shot at Effie.

oh i thought, from the thread title "Queen Latifah as Mabel" that this thread was about an all-black version of "Mack and Mabel" - whew! glad i was wrong about that.
There...I corrected it in the subject line for all subsequent replies. When I first saw this topic I thought maybe she was coming in to play Mabel in the Pajama Game revival! I was picturing her and McKean doing "I'll Never Be Jealous Again".

Ah... I can see her in the role, I guess. John Travolta too.
And yes, Corine, Harvey is Edna, but what about Divine?
Queen would be great for the movie because then they could put someone with talent and training, instead of a "name" or some american idol b*tch in the lead roles!!! I'm just saying.
