I am disappointed it wasn't done online. I'm out in MN, so obviously can't fly out there on the very slim hope that I'll win lotto (and don't have the $1,000 to shell out for the regular ticket...I'm only eating one meal a day as it is!) I was hoping it would be online and lotto winners would know a few days ahead of time, then I would have figured out a way to get out there, even if it meant hitchhiking.

I think that all the claims that an online system would be subject to cheating are absolutely wrong. There are ways it could be set up to avoid that, quite easily, and similar to the way they're going to run the lottery. Any name can only be entered once, and the name chosen is the one who has to provide photo i.d. and is also the one who gets into the theatre that night. It could easily have been done online, with the winners THEN having to show up at NYTW to show their i.d. and getting some sort of voucher to turn in to the box office that night. Simple. Any worries of no-shows could have been handled by creating a system for that, much like a cancellation line, like at every other Broadway show. I think they've made a big mistake and I think they're going to realize that on April 24 when they have a crowd that is unwieldy and likely chaotic.

i like rent but it seems the pettiness and sniping has gone too far
we can get through this and all challenges
cant we
I still say that doing it this way is much better. Now they are guarenteed that everyone who wins the lotto will be there and they wont have to deal with people planning a trip to NYC at the last second and the possibility of no shows.
lets just hope that everyone LEAVING work early for this lottery really has some good excuse. i mean, i know at the place i work at that if my boss went to her supervisor and said she had to leave at 3:30, and if asked for what responded 'so i can enter the rent lottery' everyone in the department would just laugh in her face. i'm still debating entering because while i work above the minimum and could leave work 1.5 hrs early that is also decent cash being lost for some slim hopes. i guess i've got a month and a half to decide.
I'm just going to buy tickets...its worth it.
Has anyone else requested an invitation yet? I still haven't got mine...
I requested one when I went to the page through FID and didn't realize that "Full price" meant $1000+. I figured it would be $100-200. Oops.
Did you get one?
Munk - I think invitations are being mailed early March, so very soon. I think you can email NYTW to see if you're on the list to get one.
munk, I'm waiting too.
Yeah munk, didnt realize i forgot to answer the question. Haven't gotten it yet... though this did help me make it onto the FID mailing list... somehow...

I'm an original Renthead from back in '96. I'm definitely not old but these posts make me feel like I am. Moved on to the corporate world and no longer identify with or like the show? Able to afford $1000 tickets? I understand comments like these comments in various posts aren't referring to *all* original Rentheads. But I really think there are very few able to pop on a tux and drop a grand on a ticket!
Amen! I was a Renthead in '96, and I'm in my thirties with a *corporate* job now. And I sure don't have $1000 for tickets to the benefit.
I'm not offended or anything...it's just kind of funny that people think that.
But the benefit is for charity. They can't charge normal Broadway prices for this if they're trying to raise money for multiple organizations. I think it's cool they even made the gesture to keep those front 2 rows open for the Rentheads.
I'm not planning on trying the lottery myself. I'd love to, but I've seen the OBC plenty of times, so it's not as big a deal. It's going to be crazy...but if you're in NY and you can do it, I'd say try it. I won at Adam Pascal's last show in 1997, and that was a total zoo. So you never know!
Hi there. :o)
Sorry I'm late to respond but I was at work. I don't think anyone was making any generalizations. Actually in my original post I even said "I understand comments like these comments in various posts aren't referring to *all* original Rentheads." (wow - that's good grammar sorry! ha!) And I definitely didn't mean for my post to be argumentative in the least. Sorry if it was interpreted that way. I come to this board for fun! :o) I just meant I don't think very many "original" Rentheads that have moved on enough to pay $1000 a ticket. I do understand the posts about how how we have moved on in life, family, jobs, etc. Sure wish I had the $$ for a full price ticket. It's going to be a great evening benefitting many worthy causes.
Good luck to EVERYONE attempting lotto - whether you've been a Renthead since 1996 or 2006!
:o)
JenD512, ditto to your amen. I was 26 when I first saw the show in '96 and still love it just as much if not more so. I get out of work by 3 and still debating on heading over. It can't be any worse then the lotto was for Idina Menzel's last weekend in Wicked could it?
AAAAAMEN. I think Wicked lotto on an average Saturday may be more insane than the lotto will be for the Rent anniversary!
someone's going to have to win. as long as it's not tourists i'm okay.

I hope I can go...doubt it..
Online lottery would have been so much easier =/
agreed, and i'd rather not see the jubilant faces of the winners when my name isn't called but whatever will be, will be

There is either going to be a ton of people or a little. I'm sure many people are thinking that there's going to be a million people there so why even try. Hopefully that will be the case... I won'tat all be surprised if there is a ton of security and helicopters and news casters.
I could only imagine the chaos and fighting. It's like holiday time and a new toy is out and everyone is waiting in line at 5:00am. It was something this past christmas and someone was killed being trampled over because of a stupid toy.
This happened for beanie babies and those tomagotchie things and tickle me elmo...etc... It's been ridiculous. Now that there is something 'good' at stake- it's only going to be 100X more chaotic.
But it's a LOTTERY. There are no good spots, or luckier spots or benefits to getting there early. Why would people be fighting over anything? I don't get it.
maybe i'm wrong but i think she meant that the crowd in general would be insane... just like people waiting out and going nuts during the half hour that will determine how fulfilled we will be in life :) like, Em, imagine it being like Barnes & Noble with all the singing and mooing and obnoxious kids but add in people double their age also doing the same. that's what i'm anticipating.
although i know all you BWWers will be in line!

Thank you dreaminaret- that it what I meant!

dreaminaret, I don't think there will be many 'tourists' playing this lottery. Unless you're talking about the many fans from outside the city who will be there. Tourists, in general, are unlikely to even know that this will be happening.
the only benefit to getting there early I could possibly think of is, what if the half hour goes by and not everyone got the chance to put in a card? Do you think that's possible?
