Um, I made comments about original Rentheads who have moved on, so I feel like that's directed at me. But I DID say I wasn't making generalizations. I don't know why so many people here and on other boards where this info is being discussed think that every comment in regards to the fans on this one is a generalization. I'm just saying it's the case for SOME. I never implied that it was the case for ALL of you original Rentheads.
It's probably on a Monday because that's when most shows are dark.
I've seen some crazy lottos. Hell, I've played some crazy lottos. I honestly think that it'll be insane -- but not as over the top as people assume.
First of all -- the lotto is held from 3:30 - 4:00. The "newbie" fans are mostly under 18, which means they will be in school for the most part until 3. Unless they live fairly close, there's not a shot in hell they'll make it in before 4. Not that I wouldn't have totally skipped school or left early for something like this, but still, it's going to stop some people.
Second, most people are WORKING during these hours. Whether they work a first or second shift job, they're probably going to need to call in sick in order to do this thing.
And third -- it's a lottery. Okay. Some people are practical enough to just stay at home and read BWW and get the scoop on their cell phone. Really.
Agree? Disagree?
"The tick BOOM tick BOOM is so loud I can't hear the rain on the grass. I can't hear the wind. I'm about to scream. But I realize I'm not alone."
I agree, BUT there are exceptions to every rule. I mean, kids are going to convince their parents that they MUST skip school. Hell, I'll have to skip a class to put my name in. People wil call in sick to work, I'm sure.
I think it's almost kind of funny that Rent fans are even at odds with one another over how many people we think will show up for tickets. Never agreement... hah.
Nope, there's never an agreement on anything. *MAYBE* we all agree on the fact that 'What You Own' in the movie resembles a Britney Spears video. That might be the only thing. Sad, isn't it?

Feathah (forgive me if I spelled your BWW name wrong, I'm too tired to turn a page back)... I was not referring to all Original Rentheads to be those who sold out and drop money like there's no tomorrow. But let's say that many of them are in their 30s now. By this point they're in the mid-level career jobs and it may not be permissible to leave work early, or to skip work, for the sliver of hope that they can get in. Yeah $1000 is steep but it's also a tax writeoff and at that point may not seem so bad. Plus, some companies would be willing to sponsor their tickets b/c then they get the credit.
Obviously, I'm not talking about ALL people and probably not even MOST people. But it has been 10 years since they were my age and easily able to camp out for tix and at this point it may not be practical or worth it to put their day on hold for the lotto... esp if they can in some way afford to give the charitable donation.

*crying!* I thought they were doing an online thing ahead of time... I can't go to NY on the CHANCE I might get to go to the concert... now there is looking like no hope of me going. My mom already told me I can't spend $1000+ on a ticket (even though I have the money) SADNESS!!!
Measure your life in love, RENTheads, and keep it always in your heart.

Mark my words, this will be INSANE! Think about it, when Sondheim and the new cast of Sweeney were signing cds they got well over 1000 people. Now I know that Sondheim is one of the most respected people in theater, but RENT also has an incredibly large and devoted fallowing as well. Also think about what's up for grab, you get front row seats to see the entire original cast, that is like every RENThead's wet dream. It is a major prize up for grabs and the turnout will be mindblowing. I can easily see there being over 2000 people.
As far as the internet auction, I think that by doing it in person in much more fair. Psyco fans would have cheated like crazy over the computer and there would be no way of controlling them. Also whats to stop people from entering it just for fun, who knew they would not be able to get to the show. People do stupid things, this is a much better solution.
"The hallmark of aristocracy is responsibility. Oh brother, that got me, that did me in!"
I was disappointed that it would not be online also, there is no chance I will be able to go without knowing I would get in.
That said, it is for the best. With the online thing, it would be easier to cheat. How do you think the ultimate RENThead thing was won? Those of us who knew people going for it figured out how we could vote about 100 times a minute and we did. So I am glad it isn't online. I still wish I could go. Hopefully someone on the board will go and tell us all how amazing it was
you have no idea how many people didn't know about this benefit concert at one of Anthony Rapp's booksignings. I was surprised, because wasn't the public aware of this for at least a little time?
The only places I know of where the benefit has been plubicized are the official Rent site, NYTw, Friends in Deed, the Jonathan Larson Performing Arts Foundation - and B'way and/or Rent sites such as BWW, CB, LJ, and IMDb.
I will have to cancel some appointments that afternoon, but I definately think I will try it. And if they are passing out cards that you have to fill out and drop in a box, they could possibly get it done in a half hour. I hope they have a BIG box.
Pretty pretty please don't you ever ever feel like you're less than f**ckin' perfect!
I can't imagine how they could have coordinated it online. People from all over would most likely be winning, and there is probably a good chance not everyone would be able to fly in to make it. The theater would most likely find themselves with no-shows - and then be back to square one in trying to figure out how to sell them.
And as someone mentioned, people would be having everyone they know enter for them - so just imagine for a second the craziness of an internet lottery........
The other online lottery problem would be... lets say so the theatre won't have to worry about no-shows they make you pay w/credit card... now people would just wind up scalping tix if they couldn't go. Whatever, 34 people will be very lucky and then the 17 people in the row behind them will be like "they have better seats than me and I paid $1980 more"

Who are you to estimate that all 1000 will be tops?
I'd say it will be more of a fair 500/500 split!

in reference to Liotte's comment about only original rentheads - I'm a renthead, but I couldn't have been an original one... I was still in elementary school, but now just as big a fan as anyone else =)
Wanna Be A Foster, wtf? Everyone's been making estimates and no one has a clue how many people will be going. Why don't we just get the US Census to add that question to their survey? Obviously everyone will disagree about the turnout but there's no reason to pick on one answer.

Unfortunately sarcasm doesn't come across too well on the board. Or AIM. Just ask Em and how many times I've said "I dont get it..."
And while I would try to start a mock-argument with you calling me "honey" rather than something else, my brain is currently too exhausted to think of anything crafty.

I don't get why people will get there so early. It's a lottery. Get there at 3:30 when it starts, don't waste an entire day.
And speaking as an adult, I have lots of friends, including in the corporate world, who will be taking off the afternoon from work and leaving early to come to this lotto.
