Well of course. It's almost harder to win with 3 nominations because you split the votes with yourself. I doubt he'll be able to get all the votes for one of his 3 shows (most likely Pippin if any) and so Howell will win the majority.
I still can't get over Lilla Crawford not getting nominated... I could see Deborah Cox not getting nominated (as much as I think she should be), but I did NOT expect Lilla Crawford to be locked out
"There’s nothing quite like the power and the passion of Broadway music. "
I think Alan Menken should call Kenneth Posner to let him know that just because you hold 75% of the nominations in a catagory does not neccessarily mean you are going to win. After all, Menken did lose the Academy award the first time he was up for an award against Once.
Yes, dreaming! Tyson was so wonderful and clearly loves performing...her energy and warm stage presence were undeniable. It really was an honor to see her live, and I'm thrilled she and the very sweet and lovely production are getting the recognition they deserve!
I am disappointed that Rachel Bay Jones did not get nominated for PIPPIN and was surprised not to see Chita nominated for DROOD...Victoria Clarke..really?
John Adams, thanks for that perspective. I didn't see any of that style of scenery-chewing, over-the-top comic flair in Mueller's performance. Or, to be honest, most of the cast of this recent revival.
"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe."

THIS. And this is why I thought the revival was a dud. Gorgeously sung, but blah...
Amy Clark should have been nominated for costume design for Chaplin. They were gorgeous. And especially since Martin Pakledinaz passed away, it would have been a nice tribute.
We expect me to say this by now but Drood was full of comedic flair from top to bottom and thank god a large number of people who saw it recognize that. <3 I know it won't win Best Revival, but I'm certainly happy to see it nominated. And let me say that I'm pleasantly surprised by a lot of the nominations. Very happy to see the wonderful Stephanie J. Block finally nominated. I was a bit surprised to see Jim Norton snubbed and I agree with all of the sentiments about Lilla's omission being particularly odd given the Matilda girls and their special Tony honors. Those girls do 2 shows a week and get a special prize and Lilla's shut out? That's a bit ridiculous, IMO.
Re: Featured Actress, obviously I wanted to see Jessie Mueller nominated, but I'm not surprised she wasn't. I was surprised Annaleigh Ashford was though. I know she got good reviews, but to me it was just Annaleigh doing her usual schtick. I wasn't sure what was award worthy about it. I would've rather seen Lesli Margherita take the slot.
ETA: Oh! And so stoked for Rob McClure. A wonderful performance in a truly exhaustingly bad show.
Looking at the shut-out list: I think HARVEY was a victim of being an early-season show. It got great reviews and was sold-out pretty much its entire run, but it's been closed almost a year at this point. Tony nominators have short memories. If it was running right now we would probably see nominations for Revival, Parsons, set design etc.
I liked the PICNIC revival quite a lot more than most, and would have been happy to see Marvel or Winningham pick up a nomination.

Huzzah for Carolee Carmello, my pick for Best Lead Actress in a Musical. I loved Patina and Stephanie...but Carolee was on fire, she was spinning straw into gold. Also happy to see Rob McClure included in the nominees.

This. I was actually predicting a costume nomination for Chaplin as a way to honor Marty.
I don't really see how you can compare Lilla Crawford, who is playing a role the same way 10,000,000 other girls have before her, and the (younger) girls who are creating the role of Matilda (and, in my opinion, giving performances that are universes better than the mechanical-artificial standard child acting from Crawford).
The only thing they have in common is that they're young girls.
There are tons of great performances that were not honored today in categories that were competitive. Why should the Matildas get a special award just 'cause? Either they're eligible and they can compete on the same grounds as everyone else who's eligible or not. They're still nominated for Best Musical and a bunch of other stuff. Why do they need to give a participation ribbon to the girls? The only reason they were given special honors for not being eligible is because they're young kids. And if we're giving awards now just for young kids putting in effort, Lilla certainly fits the bill.

I'm with you, AC. I thought it was a very good production (already mentioned it should have Orphans' spot on the revival list. And nominations for Winningham and Marvel would have thrilled me. Ditto Reed Birney who I think was beyond deserving.
AC6124748 Apologies for double-posting, but this thread is moving so fast and I'd edited my post after you read it. I have a lot of respect for Schneider's performance and I wanted you (specifically) to see what I'd added:
"She played an oddly eccentric actor cast in an exotic role.
'Ya know how when you watch Tom Cruise in a movie, the tiniest part of your brain can't divorce the picture of him jumping up and down on Oprah's couch? That's the kind of effect Schneider created onstage for Helena Landless.
To use your word, I thought it was 'magical'."
Again, my apologies, but her performance has stuck in my head, even after all these years. A few years back, I googled her name, wondering whatever became of her and why I never saw more from her onstage. Reading about her "real" life intrigued me, too!
