Sauja--I agree, Birney would have been on my dream nominee list. And I definitely think PICNIC was a better revival than ORPHANS.
"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe."
-John Guare, Landscape of the Body
In all, a crazy mix but it's hopefully going to lead to a night full of the Tonys spreading the wealth. My only one real complaint is that Bring In On took Harbody's musical slot.
"Hey little girls, look at all the men in shiny shirts and no wives!" - Jackie Hoffman, Xanadu, 19 Feb 2008
No nominations for Seth Numrich or Yvonne Strahovski?! They were amazing! Far more worthy than Danny Burstein for this production. But so happy for Tony Shalhoub.
Count me in the camp of being SHOCKED that BRING IT ON took the slot for HARDBODY. But yay for the other nominations.
I also don't understand how SJB is lead and Will Chase is featured in DROOD. And I get that HARDBODY is more of an ensemble piece but it seems to me like Carradine would have been the lead actor (along with Hunter).
KINKY BOOTS for choreography over CINDERELLA? Nope. KINKY was just so expected like everything else Jerry Mitchell does now. Nothing exciting about it. PIPPIN will win anyway so who cares.

I'm thrilled that Bring It On got the nomination! It may be fluff, and it obviously shouldn't win, but I left that theatre in the greatest mood. I enjoyed every minute of it, and I'm excited to see them (hopefully) perform again on awards night. I'm glad that Hardbody got some nominations to acknowledge some of the good work in that show, but overall I had trouble keeping my eyes open in it, so... yeah.
My only SHOCK is Bette Midler. Whoa.
Also... was Motown not eligible for Best Musical? I'm very surprised that it would get snubbed in favor of two shows that are closed. Ticket sales and all. I'm assuming they'll pay to perform on the telecast anyway.
I was hoping Rachel Bay Jones would've been nominated.
"Carson has combined his passion for helping children with his love for one of Cincinnati's favorite past times - cornhole - to create a unique and exciting event perfect for a corporate outing, entertaining clients or family fun."
Very happy for all of the “Vanya” nominations – Kristine, David, Shalita, and Billy all deserve them, and I hope she see some of them (especially Kristine) take the award home.
Thrilled at the Best Musical nomination for “Bring it On.” Very surprised it slipped in there, but I am very happy it wasn’t forgotten. Hoping for the cast to reunite for a performance at the ceremony.
Also excited for Stephanie J. Block & Will Chase’s nominations. I didn’t expect it, but I was hoping for a surprise Betsy Wolfe nomination. Not surprised at Mueller’s lack of a nomination, either. I really found her to be quite dull in a role that I feel like is difficult to make dull (Kelly2, please don’t kill me – I loved the show, just was not a fan of her performance).
Very surprised at the “Macbeth” shut out. I suppose this doesn’t bode well for the second extension I was hoping for so that I would be able to see it at the end of July.
I know I am in the minority on this, but I just don’t think that the score of “Kinky” is strong enough for a Tony nom. I found it unoriginal and mediocre. Fine for the show, but nothing particularly exciting. Also surprised at Stark's nomination, although I saw the show in Chicago and hear that he made the biggest improvement of all the cast.
Like everyone the Alan Cumming/Macbeth shut out is baffling. I'm pleased for Stark Sands, not a chance of winning but Kinky Boots has just been the Billy Porter show (and I know he's good) but it's great they've realised there's two of them up there.
Bombshell had one of the best scores of the season, can't believe they got shut out
Of course MOTOWN was eligible for Best Musical, it just clearly isn't any good. I guess this puts a damper on Riedel's thought that this year's ceremony would be a tribute to Motown.

Why does anyone think I care whether or not they individually liked Jessie's performance? I like her enough for everybody so it's totally under control. As Holly said once on Dance Moms: you're completely entitled to your wrong opinion.
I actually was wondering if MACBETH was somehow not eligible for a Drama Desk or Tony Award - I also can't believe it was completely overlooked. I'm glad I've got a ticket to go this Friday!
Could not be happier for all the Virginia Woolf love and I'm praying for a sweep! Though I want Morton and co. to win, I am more than a little saddened by the lack of a nomination for Fiona Shaw.
Gotta give credit to Dave Itzkoff for this in the NYT wrap-up post:
Meanwhile, “Bombshell,” Julia Houston and Tom Levitt’s new musical about the life of Marilyn Monroe, was entirely shut out, perhaps because it is completely fictitious and exists only on the NBC series “Smash,” and hence not eligible for real Tony Awards. NYT - Tony Award Nominations: Who Got Snubbed?
Words don't deserve that kind of malarkey. They're innocent, neutral, precise, standing for this, describing that, meaning the other, so if you look after them you can build bridges across incomprehension and chaos. But when they get their corners knocked off, they're no good anymore…I don't think writers are sacred, but words are. They deserve respect. If you get the right ones in the right order, you can nudge the world a little.
I'm so happy for everyone nominated, especially Carolee Carmello! Sad that Fiona Shaw wasn't nominated, though, her performance was incredible.
I'm very happy that out of the below list of shows I saw all but four - Motown (but will see it on May 22), A Christmas Story, Lucky Guy, and Cinderella.

>> "I still can't get over Lilla Crawford not getting nominated... I could see Deborah Cox not getting nominated (as much as I think she should be), but I did NOT expect Lilla Crawford to be locked out"
I can understand Kelly2's disappointment in her earlier post, too. BUT, the Tony Committee pretty much painted themselves into a corner by unilaterally awarding the Matildas without allowing input by Tony voters. If Lilla had been allowed eligibility/a nomination, a bad situation would have gotten worse.
I still contend that Young Actors should not be allowed eligibility at all. They should have their own "floating" category (optional from year to year) for an honorary Tony citation. Pitting Young Actors against adults is unfair to both sides.
...and Tony voters should make the decision for who is awarded a citation.
