I'm sorry to say that I didn't really enjoy it. I look forward to it at the Tonys.
"I've got to get me out of here
This place is full of dirty old men
And the navigators and their mappy maps
And moldy heads and pissing on sugar cubes
While you stare at your books."
Raul did a lovely job, even though I had to sit through 40 minutes of Kelly first. I didn't thing his name would pose such a problem, but I suppose one can't give Kelly too much credit. It threw me that the song went so fast (and so short!), but I'm very glad he got the exposure and gave a much-deserved shout-out to Mary-Mitchell Campbell.
My problem with Kelly is that I honestly think the dumb blonde thing is an act. Why try that hard to be so stupid? Ugh. I almost fell off my bed when she asked him how it feels to make that kind of sound, or something.
I loved the performance and feel really dumb because I didn't even notice a difference in arrangement but then again it's early. I thought he sounded wonderful and was happy that they didn't do it in the context of the show and that it was just him standing and singing. Sunday will be specail now. It would have been a bit weird seeing Raul rip his heart out and seeing the big Joey Lawerence poster in the background. Oh yeah and I also don't know how much more Rippa I can stand but I gotta say I loved Ted as the guest host (although who isn't pumped for some NPH tommorow) and his man crush on Raul lol.
RIP Natasha Richardson. ~You were a light on this earth ~
That was the typical solo version of the song. When singers sing it for a concert or something, that's the typical arrangement. The piano part just sounded like the regular Sondheim piano part.
The difference is that it was JUST piano, whereas by that point on stage, he'd be backed by the entire ensemble. I didn't have a problem with the arrangement, just the tempo.
When Ted went to hug him, Raul looked as though he was like "......."
"A birdcage I plan to hang. I'll get to that someday. A birdcage for a bird who flew away...Around the world."
"Life is a cabaret old chum, only a cabaret old chum, and I love a cabaret!"-RIP Natasha Richardson-I was honored to have witnessed her performance as Sally Bowles.
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.
It's great they'll be featuring Erin Davie. Too bad they can't feature Mary Louise though, the other nominee. But the Ebersole's material with Wilson would not be good for a morning talk show.
Peas in a Pod should play well that early in the morning. It's easy to stage (as would most of Grey Gardens). It's peppy and fun. We'll get to see Erin (yeah!) and promote the Broadway cast cd. And, it'll be a nice book-end for seeing Christine as Little Edie on Sunday.
Does anyone know what the Grey Gardens feature on the Today Show on Thursday is supposed to be? Someone mentioned it earlier in the week but I'm not sure what it is. I don't think it's a performance.
"She sang each word, the angels heard ... They closed her mouth and shipped her south. The woman's done."
yeah, im also really glad that GREY GARDENS is doing "Peas in a Pod". Erin hasn't gotten much publicity for this show, so it'll be nice for both her and Christine to perform tomorrow morning! And its a light and fun song, so it should make people...happy in the morning :)
And I just watched the CURTAINS performance, and thought it came off well, except for a few weird camera angles. But that isnt the cast's fault, haha

Umm the cohost today was Ted her old sitcom star--he's anythign but black...
I do think Kelly ups the dumb blonde shtick--but I knew her ever since I was 11 (and she had a goth wig!) when she premiered on All My Children and her character there was smart so maybe I'm giving her too much credit and thinking of her character :P
Raul was good but the shortedned version fo the song ruins a lot of its power for me, and his vibrato thing drove me crazy! Was it worse than normal or have all the threads on here about it just caused me to pay it undue attention?
Hah, probably. It's enough to corrupt anyone. I like his vibrato anyway, but I didn't think it was too overwhelming in this version at all. Perhaps it's just more noticeable when he doesn't have a theater to fill.
