Please put personal and critic reviews in this thread!
I'm anxious to hear how she is in the show. I loved her rendition on Oprah. I like her voice. Very worried/concerned about her acting abilities.
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

She seems to cry everytime I see her in anything! She cried in AI everytime she sang, then she cried at Oprah's show and now...

well if i had as hard a life as she's had, I'd probably cry to if i was fortunate enough to be able to be on AI, then Oprah, then Broadway. Her life is taking her places she never thought they would.
Anyway, I have to say, she looks good! Though like everyone else I'm sure, I'm worried how she acted the piece but I do wish her well!
What about the actors behind her who have struggled and worked hard at the craft of singing and dancing and have to stand behind someone from a reality show. That may be harsh, and if she is good, good for her, but just saying.
She said in the newspapers today, she never has even seen a Broadway show before.
I managed to find one random review so far from someone that saw it tonight, it sounds like she may have pulled it off, now I need to read a professional review.
I just got back from Fantasia's opening night in "The Color Purple." I'm not a theatre geek by any means, but I have seen CP once before with LaChanze, and I own the soundtrack and know it inside and out.
In my opinion, Fantasia did an INCREDIBLE job. I was actually amazed at how well she did. I figured she'd be able to tackle the songs (which she OWNED, btw). But her Lifetime movie left me more than a little worried about how she'd do in the non-singing parts of the show. I shouldn't have been concerned. She held her own throughout against people who have been doing it for a year and a half. There was only one noticeable slip up, when Fantasia stepped on someone else's line near the end of the show. Besides that, perfection. In my opinion, she was just as good as when I saw (Tony Award-winning) LaChanze.
Like I said, I'm not a professional critic. I don't know what the reviews will say in the morning or what theatre geeks on Broadway message boards are saying. But I can tell you that by the time it got around to "I'm Here," there was not a dry eye around me. And the extended standing ovation that Fantasia got during her bow is proof enough for me that she did a truly remarkable job. If it is at all possible for you, GO SEE IT! No disrespect to the person that wrote that review, but I would like to hear what Broadway fans that aren't Fantasia fans thought of her performance. She looks good in the Celie costume.

-Maybe that's why she thinks that The Color Purple is a good musical! LOL

CurtainPullDowner - While I am a huge Fantasia fan and plan on going and seeing her in this show, I totally know what you're saying!
She's got a fraction of the education her fellow actors have, only a splash of the professional experience they all have, and hasn't had to wait half as long as them... a wee bit ironic? seemingly a tad "unfair"? yup.
But, on the otherhand... if you got it, you got it!
the fact that she's never seen a show is a tad... shocking. It cant think of a single NBA star who was drafted having never seen a game before...
guess she never had the money nor opportunity. sad. glad she's having it now!
Tasia on AI from Dark Gable on 4/11/07 @ 12:07:37 AM Just an FYI, she only cried 2x on AI; 1) when she performed "Summertime" and 2) When she performed "I Believe" at the finale.
Get your facts straight before you post GREMLIN!

It's so funny when users make fun of my appearance and they don't have face pics of themselves. Just wrong, and that's why I wanted to post tha message I got, I barely watch AI, so the 2 times I happened to watch it, she was crying, not like Im trying to put her down, I barely know who Fantasia is. People can be nice and just correct my facts, which I will gladly edit. But there is no need to make fun of anyone's appearance.

The fact that Fantasia has never seen a Broadway show before has absolutely nothing to do with her capability or her talent.
To say that seeing a Broadway show is prerequisite for being on stage is just stupid.
Personally, I thought Fantasia was okay on AI (not the best) and I would never buy her album (I don't like her music), but I will definitely be going to see THE COLOR PURPLE again because of her. From what I've seen thus far (Oprah, AI) I think her performance could be something very raw and special.
Fantasia's lack of Broadway knowledge might make for a VERY interesting performance- and probably something extremely rare. Whether that's a good thing of a bad thing,...we'll see. But I'm rooting for her. There's nothing more fulfilling than seeing someone who had a rough life suddenly be this successful.

I'm more interested to see her backstage and see how she gels with the cast and how she deals with quick changes, etc. I don't know, I just find that fascinating for someone with no theatrical background. Most people think it's so glamorous, but it's actually so cramped and dingy backstage. I just wonder what she's like 5mins before going onstage.
on second thought, perhaps her theater niavety could work to her advantage. she should have a relatively non "affected" or "gimmicked" performance.
in other words, she has no one's shoes to fill because she has simply seen no one else's shoes! she wont try to create a certain acting style beacuse so-and-so got a Tony for it, she won't try singing a certain style becasue "thats what they want to hear," and she gets to create something ENTIRELY her own. no teacher has told her what is right and wrong (we'll forget simon for the moment), and she's enver tried to alter her style to beat someone else out for a part.
she is completely raw. completely innocent. completely fresh. and perhaps... completely brilliant.
