What musical out right now if most likely to be revived first? OK, same topic, but different question: which should be revived first? Because, as many of you know, shows that shouldn't be revived are sometimes revived lol.
I don't know about which will be revived first, but I think Rent should be revived. It'll be really sad when it closes, because, as I've said before, its one of those shows that EVERYONE should see. What are your thoughts?

A few years ago, the two musicals I wanted most to be revived were Little Shop of Horrors and Fiddler on the Roof. And this past year they were both revived, and neither were well-received. Be careful what you wish for, I guess.
Although it has been performed constantly by regional theatres and festivals, I would love to see Sunday in the Park with George on Broadway, in a space like Studio 54.

Posted: 8/22/04 at 11:45pmI think Thoroughly Modern Millie and Urinetown will be revived within the next 15-20 yrs. I have a feeling Rent, Avenue Q, Wicked, Aida...all those BIG shows with mucho awards wont be revived. Although I do think Wicked (depending on how long it runs, probably about 3-5 more years Id say) would make a lot of money if it was revived say for one night only at Radio City with it's original cast like 3 or 4 years after it closes. Similar to what Once On This Island did, only they did it at the Winter Garden Theatre.

These shows are recent, but not out now, but I hope for a revival:
Thoroughly Modern Millie
Urinetown
Cabaret (again)
As for shows playing now:
Hairspray
The Producers
42nd Street (again)
Aida
Wicked
But those shows won't close for awhile with the exception of Aida and 42nd Street.

Posted: 8/23/04 at 12:27amI was born after it played on Bway, I'd love to see Sweeney Todd! All I've seen is the concert dvd w/ Lupone and Hearn (Which I loved) but I want to see the real thing!

hmmm.... give it like 15 or so more years but I think Urinetown, Millie, maybe and it's a big maybe Boy From Oz.
What should get revived?

State Fair (when was the last time it was done? I think it was done in the 90's but i'm not sure)

YEAH for Sweeney! Who do you think is capable of being Sweeney? Just a question.
I think Hairspray will be revived soon as well as Wicked just beciase of the kind of audience they recieve.

Posted: 8/24/04 at 5:31pmTo actually answer the question, meaning musicals running now, I think Aida or Rent would be revived. Both could easily be reconceptualized.

Posted: 8/24/04 at 5:34pmthis is kind of a tough one....i would think it would have to be a show that is open to interpretation and re-vamping, like the Chicago revival...i think Beauty and the Beast could actually be a good show if it was un-Disneyfied (is that a new word?) and given more of a surreal, dark version like the old Cocteau film. I know Night Music is coming, so i won't suggest that...maybe Pippin, with a new book...

Posted: 8/24/04 at 5:46pmThat Beauty and the Beast idea is interesting. It's totally feasible, too, to make the story un-Disneyfied (lol, I like that word). They would need a new score, tho, because the Disney music is mostly happy, wouldn't work too well the new theme. Some songs might work (i.e. If I Can't Love Her), but others (i.e. Be Our Guest, Belle) just wouldn't.

Brian Stokes Mitchell played Sweeney once, and was well-recieved. I think it would be very interesting to see what he would do with the role.
I would love to see a revival of Anyone Can Whistle, simply because it would confuse audiences just as much as it did back in the 60's.

West Side Story was one of my picks - and I'm delighted to hear that it is being revived.
The other is No Strings, but with an updated book. And possibly Gigi. (I've always loved that one.)

Posted: 8/24/04 at 7:19pmWest Side Story with original choreography??? ugh... call me when they let it go and decide to give that show some substance. I've never been to New York, but I'm pretty sure the gangsters don't do ballet in the streets. Couldn't they have used a dance style that might be a little more believable. It was fine for its day, but let's update it. I'd like to see someone provide some harsh, bad a** choreography for this show. Make it dark. It's not a happy musical. Then I'd go see it again.... just a thought.
