I thought Kinky Boots was a fun show with a great message, but I think Matilda was a great show with fantastic music, lyrics, sets, and cast, and was far more memorable. I agree that it should've won the Tony.

Riedel loves to champion an underdog, so that on the off-chance there's an upset, he can be the one out front saying "You see? I was the only one who got it right!" If you read his column last year, you'd think Hamilton was all hype and Bright Star was going to pull a momentous upset. Dear Evan Hansen is almost certainly the show to beat this year, but it serves no purpose for Riedel to be one of the crowd.

Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

I just threw up a little. We did not see the movie and knew nothing of the story, but bought tickets for the show last fall based on the music box clip on the website and faith in Mr. Karimloo. This worries me.

DEH has "slipped up a little"?  What the hell is he talking about? It's selling out every performance, it's bringing in more than 100% of gross potential every week, and, most importantly, it's average ticket price is still ticking up. It was $151 and change last week. That's the biggest tell. And the tourist season hasn't even started yet, and watch that average ticket price soar when it does. I'm pretty sure that investors in the show hope that it keeps slipping up like that.

Even though I think DEH should and will win the Best Musical Tony, Come From Away is my sleeper pick (and I said that some time ago. ) I wouldn't be shocked if it brings home the big prize.

I think Riedel talks nonsense but what he says about DEH makes sense to me. The hype has dimmed down since Come From Away arrived. Sales aren't everything.

Sometimes I wonder if the people on this site are capable of reading between the lines or understanding subtlety (never thought I'd use those phrases to talk about Riedel).  He doesn't say Dear Evan Hansen is "slipping up" like making a mistake. He says with all of the news shows opening, Dear Evan Hansen is "slipping"... meaning losing its strong grip as the favorite on the Tony.  People are starting to talk about other shows, giving them some momentum.  It has NOTHING to do with how Dear Evan Hansen is doing at the box office.  Sheesh.

This is probably the tightest Tony Awards race since 2012(Once vs. Newsies). And since three shows are fairly even in the race, this might be the closest race in Tony history. When was the last time three shows had the potential to win best musical?

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

Out of all the obnoxious things in this "article," that takes the cake for me. I'm tired of the implication that if teenage girls (and it's always girls) like something, it must be vapid, or unintellectual, or inferior. Teenage girls and good work aren't mutually exclusive.

Ticket sales does not equal Best Musical. See Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder.

Yes, what exactly is worrying you? That people are enjoying the show? Teenage girls enjoy Wicked and so do a lot of other people.  Just go see the show and see what you think.  Don't let Riedel's selective assessment of the audience determine your theatergoing.

When considering the best musical race, I think we need to take into account what show would play best across the country. This fact does play into who wins.

Based solely on preference, I would personally vote Comet. That said, I think Come From Away best fits the show that can go on the road and sell with the Best Musical Tony award.

Comet would be difficult to stage and its possible DEH may not appeal to the fly over states.  I didn't think CFA would sell here on Broadway. I was wrong. That leads me to believe if it can sell here, it can sell anywhere.

I think DEH still has the best claim to Best Musical at this moment, but who knows? Hopefully we'll see the awards spread around. There certainly is no show that should sweep this year.

You're worried that the show might bring teen girls into the theatre, yet you bought tickets to a show that is an adaptation of an animated musical princess film that's been around for over 20 years?  Everything about the marketing, imagery, music clips, etc. is pretty obvious that they are intentionally appealing to young girls.  If you're worried about anything it's that you seem to seem to be pretty closed minded and averse about specific types of shows, yet you buy tickets without giving any thought to what you will be seeing.  The music box clip shows pretty set designs and the couple "dancing" on the music box to a short clip the lead singing the BIG PRINCESS SONG that sounds exactly like a BIG PRINCESS SONG.  And what does "faith in Mr. Karimloo" mean?  That his presence will turn the show into something that it's not?  That's pretty funny.

Most infuriating Tony win I can remember. I'm still mad about it too. Matilda is not perfect, but so much is it is absolute genius. Kinky Boots is vapid. That fact that those yeah-yeah-yeahs won Best Score over Tim Minchin's creativity...... just no.

I stay out of fandom things altogether, but am definitely still rooting for DEH to win Best Musical as it's easily one of my favorite shows I've seen in my life. That said, I see both Great Comet and Come From Away this weekend, so we'll see if that changes. I'm sure I will enjoy both, but expect that I'll still be rooting for Evan to win come June.

If I were to predict now, a likely scenario feels like DEH taking Score, Come from Away taking Book, and Comet taking Direction, with any of the three taking Best Musical.

I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

Was the last time a three-way split between musical/book/score the year of Piazza, Spelling Bee, and Spamalot?

Agree, it has the emotional appeal and is connects to both young and old. In terms of how it will sell elsewhere, I think it will sell well, Waving Through A Window is a huge song that many people are singing all over the place. Look at Fun Home, there selling on the road, they won best musical...I think the only reason Comet is doing as well as it is on Broadway is because of Josh Groban. If Comet was to tour they would have to re stage it completely, the story is also quite confusing for some. Come From Away I think needs to hone in on what the show is about a bit more before Tony's. At this point I see, DEH taking the big prize, along with awards for Ben, Rachel, Benj/Justin and Steve. Comet gets the creative awards, Come From Away gets the awards in between those. Ultimately as much as I love Jenn Collela, she is not doing what Rachel Bay Jones is doing across the street.

Ultimatly Dear Evan Hansen has the momentum of the you will be found aspect and everything going with that, and ultimatly once nominations come out there will be even more to advertise.

Yes, and I can only think of one other three-way split off the top of my head (2000: The Dead for Book, Aida for Score, and Contact for Musical).

I feel like the real sleeper could be A Bronx Tale.   It doesn't seem to be on anyone's list - at least the one's I've read and seen.... and I haven't seen the show... but man, it's doing great box office ....  Could it be the one that comes in and sweeps a few noms away??

You and several others here have completely misunderstood my concern. I am hardly a "theater snob" and I am not in the habit of disparaging shows as "vapid" or "unintellectual" (although those adjectives have been used by pompous critics, professional and otherwise, to describe several of my favorite shows).

In truth, I am an avid supporter of young people's involvement in the arts and have taken my share of them (including the 10 year old daughter of a dear friend) to the theater on multiple occasions. My concern is with the behavior often demonstrated by kids (both male and female) in large numbers in the theater. I recently attended a matinee that was overrun with misbehaved children and my post was simply an expression of concern that the Sunday afternoon performance for which I have tickets will prove a similar experience.

Some of us think otherwise. Don't get me wrong, I love DEH, but after Ben Platt leaves, I'm not sure I would want to see it again. I would see this production of "Come From Away" again, even if every OBC member had left.
