Rob Marshall needs to stop. Luhrmann is almost as bad of a choice for Follies, though at least he could do something interesting with Loveland.
I love Paul Thomas Anderson. His FOLLIES would be totally wrong, though. Can we not make move musicals for a while? They rarely work. Like ever.
Is Quvenzhane Wallis too young for Hattie?
How we can turn this:
"‘I’d love to take a look at Follies,” Marshall told Broadway.com, when asked which other Sondheim musical he’d like to bring to the screen."
And make it into something that is even remotely on the drawing board, is a bit ridiculous. They ask any director of a comic book movie what other comic book characters they like, too. And none of those movies ever get made, either.
Maybe it'll be NBC's musical next Christmas.
Just imagine:
Lars Von Trier's Spring Awakening
Can we have a big beautiful broadway production with a great cast and the original script instead?
Jordan, that is absolutely ridiculous. Wallis is obviously more of a Solange.
Jv92, MGM would like a word with you
Honestly it's who's going to be the screenwriter for FOLLIES that worries me more than who's directing it. Rob Marshall could do a great job with it as long as he understands what made FOLLIES such a cult classic to begin with and that the musical needs the most important ingredient: a top-tier writer on board.
Besides it could've been worse... It could've been Stephen Daldry or Marc Webb. UGH!
Jordan please! Don't remind me of the horrors that was the film version of RENT....
Fantod, I should have specified. STAGE TO SCREEN adaptations rarely work. The MGM classics like SINGIN' IN THE RAIN, GIGI (as contemptible as it is) and THE BAND WAGON are masterpieces because they were CONCEIVED for the screen.
But something like WEST SIDE STORY or CAROUSEL... The only one that's actually worked completely in my estimation is THE KING AND I.
Oh ok, that makes more sense. However, you didn't think The Sound of Music or My Fair Lady worked? Also, if you've never seen it I would recommend watching the How to Succeed movie, because it is often forgotten but is hilarious.
Musicals to movies are hit and miss.
But when they work they are magic.
For every Nine or Jersey Boys there is a Hairspray or Chicago.
How to Succeed is also a fave of mine.
GIGI (as contemptible as it is)..
I really, really dislike you now for that comment.
I would recommend watching the How to Succeed movie, because it is often forgotten but is hilarious.
Why? The jettisoned a good chunk of the score...No "Happy To Keep His Dinner Warm", no "Cinderella Darling", no "Paris, Original". It may have well just been billed as a comedy...with some incidental songs thrown in.

@tazber
For every THE WIZ there is a HAIR and for every PHANTOM there is a EVITA.
I have a feeling that if done right, FOLLIES might be one of musical film's greats.
Yes, CarlosAlberto, but a very funny movie with some incidental songs thrown in.
Carlos, I'm sorry! I'm sorry! Don't hate me. But for all of the glitz and glamor and music, GIGI just bugs me. The Chevalier character is truly, truly disgusting and is made out to be a charming old dandy. The last Maxim's segment makes me gag.
Let's not fight. There'll be plenty of time for fighting when Spielberg's WEST SIDE STORY goes into production.
Let's rumble! Womb to tomb, sperm to worm!
My Personal Favorite Stage-to-Screen Transfers are:
1. West Side Story
2. Les Miserables
3. Fiddler on the Roof
4. My Fair Lady
5. Sweeney Todd
6. Jersey Boys
7. Little Shop of Horrors
8. Hairspray
9. Guys & Dolls
10. Chicago
Least Favorites:
1. Annie (1982)
2. Rent
3. Jesus Christ Superstar
4. The Phantom of the Opera
5. The Wiz
6. Mamma Mia (never really liked the show to begin with)
7. A Chorus Line (the Every Little Step documentary certainly makes up for it)
8. Evita
I'm sure some of you are going to disagree with my choices, but they're just all my opinions here!

Spielberg's gonna have his way tonight!
@Jeffery, if only Norman Jewison didn't retire than he could've directed FOLLIES and no one would complain about it.

I love Hair.
(I also love The Wiz)
Phantom and Evita are both pretty unwatchable, imo.
If you MUST know my favorite "screen musicals"...
1) SINGIN' IN THE RAIN (1952)
2) THE KING AND I (1956)
3) LOVE ME TONIGHT (1932)
4) MARY POPPINS (1964)
5) BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (1991)
There are a few other honorable mentions: SWING TIME, THE BANDWAGON, Lubitsch's MERRY WIDOW, etc.
