I heard this third hand or forth hand that the composer and director of Broadway's WICKED have ideas for casting a film version.
It is my understanding they have both told friends and associates they would currently cast the film with Emmy Rossum as the good witch and Anne Hathaway as the wicked witch. I know they have other names in the show, but I am not positive of the spellings and wanted to play it safe.
Would be very young casting of course. Other then that, their thoughts are not very surprising. We know about Rossum's singing talent and I hear Hathaway has an amazing voice. Anyone else heard about these two actresses in association with WICKED?
that's interesting! i'd like to hear Hathaway's voice... i think that i'm not really ready for a film version of WICKED though. i'm too attached to the book and show for there to be a movie of it. some how a movie seems more dispensable to me... dunno... i need to go organize my thoughts :)
Personally, I'd be a bit surprised to see any casting decided since the script hasn't been written nor is the creative set.

I saw Anne Hathaway in the Encores production of Carnival. She does have a nice voice, but she is wrong for Elphaba. She just doesn't have the defiance or strength in her.
Emmy Rossum has a nice voice, but can't pull off the bubbleheadedness comedy that makes Glinda work.
Craig, if you read the original message, it has nothing to do with anyone having already been cast. Kindly reread the original post.........Be good.

They're both great actresses, but I cant see Emmy as funny little Glinda, and I cant see Anne (though Id love to hear her) as Elphaba. I dont though, maybe they will surprise us (if this turns out true)

u kno wats really funny? i havent even heard that theres a director set....or that a movie is definately in the works.
WISH I HAD
Perhaps I should rephrase and say that I'd be surprised to hear anyone making casting ideas known... I read your post and understood it, thank you :)
NO ONE SAID a movie was in the works!!!!!!!!!!
"It is my understanding they have both told friends and associates they would currently cast the film with Emmy Rossum as the good witch and Anne Hathaway as the wicked witch."
Notice the use of the word WOULD. Apparently they were asked IF a FILM version WAS to be made NOW, whom would you envision starring?
Again, NO ONE has said that a film version of WICKED is in the works. Kinda scary how people read something and it translates as something else. Sorry if anyone was confused. Kindly read the posts a bit more carefully perhaps? :)
Maybe it's me...but they're kinda interchangable.
uggg.
Hathaway was atually offered the part of Christine first, but couldn't take it because she already commited to something else that was happening at the same time.
Craig, I have been in this business for decades. Indeed I have been in shows and loooooooooooong before we even got outta town some of the creatives chatted about who would eventually "star in the film version."
If you watch the video of the making of THE PRODUCERS cd, which I believe was filmed before the show ever opened on Broadway, you will hear Nathan Lane, Matthew Broderick and Mel Brooks chatting about who eventually will star in the film version of THE PRODUCERS musical.
I think more than anything, the "casting game" is a fun subject and it is a subject that often occurs very prematurely.
eponine, i'm not complaining about that

Isn't Kristin Chenoweth already tied to a future film production? I remember her saying somewhere that if they made a movie she had the rights to play Glinda.
I can't really see Rossum and Hathaway in the roles.
The idea of this actually made me laugh my ass off. I like Emmy, I do. And I've never heard Anne sing.. but oh man. Thanks for the laugh.

the rumors i've heard is that they want a movie of the book, not the musical... in that case i can definitely see these two actresses playing those parts. however a movie of the musical would be a different story.
I assume if you've been in the biz for decades, that would mean you've got decades of life experience on you as well. Which, I would imagine, should probably include not biting the hand that feeds you, particularly the hand of the person who's running this site. We kiss Craig's ass for a reason, you know. If not for his charming personality, than for the fact that this board is still free and he helps to run it on his own time. So don't get so defensive over someone who's contributing to your thread in more ways than just offering his commentary on the topic in question, don't abuse the CAPS and exclamation marks, and show a bit of respect, hmm?
ETA: I find Hathaway and Rossum interchangable too. I can't imagine either of them as Glinda. I'd prefer it if they made a movie out of the book instead of the show anyways. Can you imagine what would have happened if Demi Moore was cast as Elphaba?

if they made a movie...just to make the majority of people happy:
Elphaba: Idina Menzel
Glinda: Jennifer Laura Thompson
That's really strange. I was just thinking yesterday that Rossum would be a good Glinda. Hathaway has an excellent voice.
I'd like to see if this develops any further.
I pray that I die before this comes into fruition... unless the guy playing fiyero is hot, then I'll go see it, what the hell...
I think, were they to cast a musical movie, that Hathaway would be better as Glinda. I really couldn't see Emmy Rossum in Wicked, even though she has a nice voice.

It's going to be Catherine Zeta Jones as Elphaba and Renee Zellweger as Glinda.
bway86, while I don't mind Emmy's singing voice, I think it's just because I can't imagine Emmy having the comedic timing or peppy ditziness needed for the role.
Where have you guys heard Anne sing before?

She did Carnival at Encores City Center a few years ago.
