i am not able to do an unprofessional production. unfortunately, i'd be up for it with the best of the best and i would be laughed out of the room! LOL!
Velma! You get to sing with the Merry Murderesses!
Jack: For your information, most people who meet me do not know that I am gay.
Will: Jack, blind and deaf people know you're gay. Dead people know you're gay.
Jack: Grace, when you first met me, did you know I was gay?
Grace: My dog knew.
"This table, he is over one hundred years old. If I could, I would take an old gramophone needle and run it along the surface of the wood. To hear the music of the voices. All that was said." - Doug Wright, I Am My Own Wife
Velma - she gets to open the show with "All That Jazz" (come on, no brainer!) and she is the pseudo-narrator of the show and this is the role that has won awards (Tony for Bebe, Oscar for Zeta) whereas Roxie has not
Roxie - she gets that great monologue with "Roxie" and can improv the **** out of it
but, they both get to dance "Hot Honey Rag" so it's all good.
Don't f*ck with me fellas. This ain't my first time at the rodeo.
I think that either part would be great to play but if it were me , i think that Roxie would be a better part to go from the innocent to the muderder . Break a leg ......hope u get it ...
"In the words of AA Milne ...get out of my chair dillhole Chandler Bing
So, the overwhelming choice appears to be Velma. I had originally wanted her, but then I got a hold of the script and remembered how big Roxie's speaking part was. But, I listened to the cd again and Velma's songs are just too good to pass up. I'm back to Velma.
I would rather play Roxie as well, she is such an interesting character. Both parts would be amazing and even though ATJ is AMAZING Roxie tips the scale for me. She has more songs I love than Velma does.
"Dont look at me that way

But you're getting the truth today"
"Ah the city. So many lights you can actually pretend one of them is shining on you."
CLIFF: "There was a cabaret and there was a master of ceremonies and there was a city called Berlin in a country called Germany - and it was the end of the world and I was dancing with Sally Bowles - and we were both fast asleep"
Although I'm waiting for a theatre company in the area to do this show so I can audition for Mary Sunshine. Now there's a role that I actually can play.
Magenta - not to sound rude. But are you SURE you are right for both Roxie AND Velma?
There haven't been many actresses that could play both. Those that have are - Chita Rivera, Ruthie Henshall, Nancy Hess, and maybe a few others. It's not many though.
Most actresses are usually right for one, and not the other. For instance, could Gwen Verdon have played Velma? No. Could you see Charlotte d'Amboise as Velma? No. Brenda Braxton as Roxie? No. Ute Lemper as Roxie? No. And it continues.
So I think the most important choice is that you choose the character that fits your acting style better, than just picking the character that has more to do.
Charlotte could obviously dance the crap out of the role. And there is a long list of fabulous blonde Velmas. But I think Charlotte's acting style is all wrong for Velma. I can't see her getting the "cold hearted b*tch" aspect of Velma.
Velma has the best song in the world with "When Velma Takes the Stand" and the greatest duet with Mama during "Class." I saw Donna Marie Asbury as this role and although she was an understudy she was incredible and the most stunning star I have ever seen. Sorry, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Asbury's got you there.
Though the person who played Roxie was brilliant, possibly even the next Chenoweth, Asbury was so amazing and wonderful and Velma has been my dream role ever since even though, sadly, I am not to great a dancer; singing and acting are my talents.
Velma, once again. Velma DOES have a great acting role, as her show-stopping "Velma Takes the Stand" requires the Triple Threat: acting, dancing, and singing.
Pretty is what changes. What the eye arranges is what is beautiful.
I'm a guy, but if I could, I'd definitely play Velma. Sure, she has a lot less stage time than Roxie, but she gets to sing "All That Jazz" and "Cell Block Tango" and "Class". Plus, she has the best lines in the show and with all her scenes the character can easily outshine Roxie and steal the show.
Ive played both Roxie and Velma..... depending on the director, both can be hysterical fun to play..... it also depends on your costar. If I had to choose blindly though, I'd say Velma.

If in Heaven you don't excel, you can always party down in hell...
Velma...I mean, I can't sing, dance, or act, so technically I couldn't play either, but if I did have talent I'd definitely want to play Velma. She has the best songs (All That Jazz, Cell Block Tango) and her dancing is amazing!
