So very hard to listen to, very raw."
It’s so hard at the theater because it’s the song that gets the least applause…always. I think basically that abuse doesn’t warrant the same kind of cheering and enthusiasm. The audiences have been treated to funny and clever lyrics/dialogue and professions of love and then all of a sudden, a serious depressing topic is revealed. Yes getting your head chopped off it also serious..lol..but this is very real and current. I always hope that Sam (and her alternates) don’t take it personally.

I think the cast knows - I only saw the first Chicago production and it was dead silence except for some gasps and tears. I think that silence speaks volumes and praise for the performance. I've read other audiences react in all manners - major applause, scattered applause, silence. But then, the show gets right back to prior tone with the next line delivered flippantly (don't know that spoiler tag is needed, but just in case:
i'm sad Abby didn't go up to the high C sharp in that delicious "truthfully" riff but i suppose the bootleg will have to suffice for that. otherwise the album is fabulous imo
"Contentment, it seems, simply happens. It appears accompanied by no bravos and no tears."
