Well, interesting to Note that on the Previews of "Inside the Actors Studio" they show Matthew Broderick saying something like "I kept on hearing all this gossip that I was doing the role, and nobody asked me." Anyways, just thought that was interesting being SJP husband and in a possible similar situation.
Nearly all of those mentioned here for the role of EVITA are wrong. Keep in mind Eva should be small, petite even and ideally she should be an actress in her late 20's, early thirties at the most. My money is on an unknown British actress for the role. (Or at least a reality TV contest winner!).
Mention was made of the originator of the role (on disc) Julie Covington and her small vocal talent. About 15 years ago there was to be an Australian revival of the show and Julie Covington was to star, her voice gave out before first previews and a English actress was brought in at the last minute. It didn't help the show and it closed after a couple of weeks.
Idina Menzel turned down an AUDITION for the role, not an offer...this is how rumors get started.
And Madonna was a rumor floated by British press. They may have floated SJP's name as well - it wouldn't surprise me. I love Britian, but their daily newspapers are as reliable in as the National Enquirer.
Joanna Riding is brilliant, but I think she's probably too old at this point. Ideally, you want someone who is 28-30 to play the role (the character ages from 15 to 32). LuPone was 27, and Paige was 30.
Also, the real Eva Peron was not that petite. She was about 5'5 and very curvy. Though if you are making the arguement that the role should be played by someone small, Sarah Jessica Parker is absolutely tiny. Updated On: 12/9/05 at 02:16 AM
I actually like the idea of Toni Collette, but I'd see her in anything so I guess I'm biased.
The key to the mystery of a great artist is that for reasons unknown, he will give away his energies and his life just to make sure that one note follows another... and leaves us with the feeling that something is right in the world.

While I'm a big fan of Toni Collette I find it hard to believe that she would want to do EVITA particularly if it means having to live in London for a long stretch.
i heard it's going to be an adaptation where eva's cousin, carrita peron, a child-woman on the brink of liberacion sexual --with a fabulous head of hair and quirky fashion sense -- goes in search of the man to replace peron, but only finds Senor Grande -- they are inextricably drawn together by their mutually corresponding passive aggression. look for the 11 o'clock DON'T CRY FOR ME STUART WEITZMAN, as carrie must abandon her public life due to a terrible slipped disc problem brought on by years of prancing in hooker-heels. WHO WOULD YOU CAST?! SHEER GENIUS I TELL YOU!

AMEN! SJP wouldn't be THAT bad, but definitely pretty bad. Then again, i HATED Patti LuPone in the initial role, so... She didn't quite have the range for it either.
I agree Toni Collette would be interesting but wish people would not dis SJP so much. She is no fool & would not do a role she could not achieve a positive result in.Esp w the logistics involved!
