Best Score? I'm asking because I haven't seen the show (yet) and the only other contenders are Memphis and Adams Family.
"If this is going to be a Christian nation that doesn't help the poor, either we have to pretend that Jesus was just as selfish as we are, or we've got to acknowledge that He commanded us to love the poor and serve the needy without condition and then admit that we just don't want to do it." -Stephen Colbert
This really shakes up several Tony races, but especially Best Actress in a Musical. I'm with WiCkEdRoCkS - engrave it now.
Has there been any other time in recent memory when a show was announced only 4 weeks before the end of the season? Also, when was the last time a director had two shows open on Broadway within a 9 day period?
I'm looking forward to hearing the controversy (or reading*, rather) if Scott doesn't get her Tony.
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
Is more than 50% of AMERICAN IDIOT's score new, and written exclusively for the theatre?
The rule mentioned above was implemented *after* TOMMY tied with SPIDER WOMAN for Best Score.
"Winning a Tony this year is like winning Best Attendance in third grade: no one will care but the winner and their mom."

"I have also met him in person, and I find him to be quite funny actually. Arrogant and often misinformed, but still funny."

"People have their opinions and that doesn't mean that their opinions are wrong or right. I just take it with a grain of salt because opinions are like as*holes, everyone has one".

American Idiot will DEFINITELY not be eligible for Best Score. Neither will Everyday Rapture. But at last... we have a BOOK other than the rest of the atrocities that have invaded Broadway this season.
And yes muscle, Lips is still refunding. It's automatic re-billing to your account.
EDIT TO ADD: Also, do we think this can sneak into the Best Musical category? I would love if it did.

I didn't even like this show (think I might be the only one), and I think it has Best Book in the bag. I adore Fela, but...no. Million Dollar Quartet has one of the most embarassing books I've ever had the misfortune to encounter. Sondheim and Come Fly Away are obviously out. And though I haven't seen American Idiot yet, does it really have a book, or is it pretty much assembled straight from the music? Meaning Rapture's biggest competition would be...The Addams Family?
