I totally agree 1000%. Gideon was better than everyone in his category that season, and that includes Kevin Kline, who won for ''Present Laughter.'' I think Gideon was basically crowded out of his category by veteran actors: Kline, Dennis Arndt, Chris Cooper and Jefferson Mays. The fifth slot was taken by Corey Hawkins, who was in ''Six Degrees of Separation,'' which was still running. Unfortunately, ''Significant Other'' closed April 23, about 2 weeks before the Tony nominations were announced. If it were still playing in May, that last slot might've gone to Gideon. (The only awards organization to recognize Gideon was the Drama League.)
Similarly, Joshua Harmon should've been Tony-nominated for Best Play, too, but his show had already closed. The four Best Play nominees - ''A Doll's House, Part 2,'' ''Indecent,'' ''Oslo'' and ''Sweat'' - were still running. It's often hard for closed shows to score nominations; sometimes, it seems like the nominators rather throw their support and help the ones that are still on the boards.
