So much for focusing on Prada - Elton's got a new musical opening October

Elton's new musical "Tammy Faye" will open in the UK in October.

Prada producers must be livid.

The fact that he has been working on this has been common knowledge for years, this isn't a surprise for anyone let alone Prada producers

I don’t think Elton was every focusing much on Prada to begin with, tbh. This Tammy Faye musical feels like much more of a passion project.

Has a composer ever opened two new musicals in one season.

I think Frank Wildhorn did many seasons ago.

Does that mean Elton is "livid" with himself as Rocket Entertainment is one of the producers and that is Elton's production company?

Again, I haven’t seen Prada, so I can’t personally pass judgement on it. But from what people are saying, it sounds like part of the issue is that the score comes across as bland and lazy, and that Elton John hasn’t even been present enough to improve it. So naturally I can see how one would feel like him devoting time and energy to another project is frustrating.

Under normal circumstances, an employer probably wouldn’t be happy to see a contracted employee pursue other projects while they aren’t adequately fulfilling the demands of the contracted job (notice I don’t know say the “terms” of the contract, because I’m sure Elton John got whatever terms he wanted - but that doesn’t mean he’s fulfilling the demands of the actual JOB itself).

Other power dynamics are, of course, at play - and that’s the reality of the industry - but that doesn’t mean the realities are above criticism.

If anybody’s livid, it’s probably Kristin Chenoweth.

Alan Menken had both Leap of Faith and Newsies among the 2012 Tony nominees for Best Musical.

I think it is a real shame that she has not been in an original mucosal since Wicked. After that, one would have expected her to be in at least one additional original musical in that interval. She is being ‘cheated’ and so are we."

I don't know if she's being cheated. Her Hollywood career has been extremely steady for years now. Much steadier than a lot of other Broadway stars. She's had pretty consistent TV work with guest arcs and supporting roles. Her popularity as a personality allows her to tour pretty easily too. That kind of security can be nice, even for people who love the stage! I think when the right role comes along, we'll see her back.
