Shhh you don't want the line to be *TOO* long! So disappointed... My parents won't let me cut school to go. I really REALLY need to meet Sondheim before I die. Aghhh
KirbyCat, if meeting Sondheim is something you truly TRULY want to do and the repercussions are something you can live with, I say cut school that day and do it. Trust me, in 20 years, it will have been well worth it.
As a mom, let me make the counter argument. If the line is long, there is a possibility that you will not get to meet Sondheim, since there is only an hour and a half alloted to this exercise. Even if you are first in line, there will not be much (or any) chance to truly speak with Mr. Sondheim. Rather than cut school, and thereby reduce your parents' trust in you and/or increase your family stress, write a nice letter to the Master (I'm sure there's an address on some thread on this site), make some thoughtful comments and ask a question. You won't be meeting him face to face, but there is a possibility of a meaningful interaction. None of my business, but I would be curious about your decision. And in either case, good luck!
Haha thanks guys for giving me more reason to rip out my hair over the issue. :) I truly do want to go, but it would be a tough commute to follow through without my parents finding out. On the other hand with the long line issue, my friend even suggested camping out the night before. (Obviously that would never happen, but if it came down to it, that could be fun...)
In the end, I doubt I'll go, but hopefully I can send a friend from the city down to pick up a signed CR for me.
I cut school a few times (actually with my parents knowledge, cuz they were awesome) and had some amazing experiences that I'll never forget. And I think meeting Sondheim is something you'll never forget. Even if for some reason the line is too long and you don't get to meet him it'll be a memory. You won't remember that day at school. I promise.
and all that I could do because of you was talk of love...
KirbyCat - there is even a third possibility. (This is kind of what I would hope my son or daughter would do under these circumstances, but it may not be a practical approach for you, so take it for what it's worth.) What if you explained your enthusiasm to your parents, and asked if one of them would go with you? You would be sharing the experience (whether great or disappointing) with a parent, rather than sneaking off and worrying about it. Do they understand/ share your enthusiasm for Broadway? They may understand it better after a day on line together! Updated On: 3/27/10 at 01:45 PM
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
Mr Sondheim is not a god. He puts his pants on & takes them off like you & me. He does # 1's & # 2's . He eats & drinks. He walks & talks.
He is immensely talented as are many people who simply do not get the right break in their career or know the right people. I enjoy his work but I do not have an altar to him built in my home where I light incense & sing Hosanna's to him.
I wonder how much inspiration he has encountered while taking number two's....

I'm sure this is a dumb question, but are you allowed to get more than one signed CD? Let's say I were coming to New York three days after this signing (damn). If someone was willing to get an extra CD signed, would that be possible? Or because of the line is it just one per person? Again, probably a dumb question. I've just never been to a CD signing before.
