Yes, he flew around over the audience at the end of the matinee and then landed on stage. Reeve Carney was out so Matthew James Thomas went on for him. He was good in all respects.
I went in as soon as they opened the doors, so must have missed the interviews and the filming. I have no idea why they are doing this. Maybe they had another feature on the local news ?
I was in the mezzanine when the Spidey got tangled up and he was right in front of me. Someone from the crew filmed the entire episode. I guess so they could analyze it later ? I also don't see how they can prevent the cords from twisting. There will always be a chance of that happening.
The two times I've seen it, the chords twisted but didn't seem to cause a problem.
One random thing I noticed this time around was that the audience was a lot more hostile than at the previous performance I attended. Last time, every little thing was met with thunderous applause (honestly, the likes of which I'd never heard in a theatre). This time, however, the audience seemed to be determined to denounce the entire production. It made for a completely different atmosphere, though it didn't seem to affect the show itself in any way.
^^They interviewed people walking in from the 42nd Street entrance after giving your tickets, only every so people. Asked about why you came to the show, are you a Spider-man/comic book fan, a Broadway fan, stuff like that. I should've plugged WONDERLAND while I had a chance .
broadwayboy101: Are you talking about the matinee? The person I was with and I were shocked that the audience was that rough to the show. People weren't laughing, reacting, clapping, .. nothing until the flying sequences all started! Very bizarre.
No standing ovation until the very end either. Most the front orchestra didn't stand anyway.
I had a great seat, Spider-man flew and landing a foot (quite surprising) in front of my feet at my seat! Wow! I was surprised as well - the wires weren't as distracting as they seem to be from the press release videos!
The audience at the matinee was very friendly, applauding everything, laughing at every joke and encouraging the Spiderman when he got stuck. But of course it was full of kids and tourists and they seemed to eat it all up.
Both times "that scene" of the Brooklyn Bridge came a lot of people were whispering "this is the scene where that guy fell" and when the stunt man got twisted at the end of Act 1 people started laughing and clapping immediately, like they were pleased they were at that performance!
I'm still baffled why they were interviewing people - A documentary? News coverage? Preview? Just to hear what people are saying? They asked what we heard about the show before hand too, I just said the good & the bad!
The audience reaction was lukewarm when I attended the show on xmas day.
The ONLY thing that got thunderous applause was the big flying sequence of Act I. Everything else was 'polite'. There were only a handful of people giving a standing ovation in the Balcony....a very few in the orchestra (from what I could see which would be the front 1/2 of it)
It's just not worthy of one. I thought the audience reaction was spot on.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?

siny - if I remember correctly, after the big fight scene/Goblin throws the piano, when I saw it last week, I think Spider-man flew in with MJ, they didn't run in.
The audience reception was pretty good at the performance I attended, lots of applause after most songs and, of course, after each flying sequence. And there were no tangle-ups with the wires or anything like that, but it was before the new ending went in. Updated On: 1/20/11 at 10:27 AM
I would like to have a pair of free tickets for this show. How will I get those? Taking my guy to Universal Studios and Disney over Valentine's Day weekend as a big surprise, so money is a little tight, but he's a BIG superhero fan so this would be great. I wanted to see if anyone wanted to simply give away a pair of tickets to an incredibly well-attended yet expensive show. You know, out of the goodness of your heart.
Has anyone seen the new ending? Playbill is reporting:
Spider-Man spokesperson Rick Miramontez told the Times that the new addition to the $65 million musical involved "an airborne finale moment that will be familiar to Spider-Man fans around the world." Link
If its Reeve flying, I saw it last night. He flew around the theater and after landing on the mezz platform he took off and the wires got tangled and the show ended there. It was lame. I thought all the flying looked the same and I really didn't think the ending was anything different or special.
At the matinee performance, Matthew James Thomas flew around the theater and then landed on stage for the curtain call. It was pretty cool.
Willep, at my performance, Spiderman definitely ran in, not flew in, with MJ in his arms. I think the whole fight scene was cut short due to him getting all tangled up in his harness.
But Bono isn't writing any new songs! They've said there will be no new songs in the show at this point. It's ridiculous. Yes, it's the book that needs the most attention, but there are 3 or 4 songs that need to either be ditched, rewritten completely or replaced. I don't know what Bono/Edge are doing at previews if they aren't writing new songs. Just sitting on their bums it would seem.
