This is not something I am happy to report, and I do not have a crystal ball. But the people on these boards, including myself, need to prepare for the headlines and ads stating Spongebob as the most nominated musical of the season.

I could very much be wrong (and honestly hope I am) but this is what a lot of the forecasts (including a lot of these predictions threads) are predicting if you just look at the numbers.

I do not think Spongebob will win many awards other than in design categories. However, with a month of being able to advertise that they are the most nominated musical of the season, maybe this could help their box office. Possibly post Labor Day?

(Please excuse the Michael-Reidel-esque false certainty in the phrasing of this thread title).

It's a wonderful production, and it deserves every nomination it has gotten, and will get tomorrow.

It does seem strange to me also that Spongebob will be the most nominated show of the season, however, I have seen it and it was incredible. I thought it was fun, clever, catchy, and the cast was sublime. It just sounds weird saying it, but Spongebob deserves all the love it will get tomorrow morning with the nominations.

I have a few shows left to see but I enjoyed the hell out of SpongeBob, wouldn't bother me in the least if it gets the most nominations. I enjoyed it more than anything else I've seen for this season so far.

In my predictions, I currently have The Band's Visit at 12 nominations and Spongebob at 12. Spongebob won't get a Leading Actress nomination and Band's Visit will most likely not get a choreography nomination. They'll both likely miss out on a Featured Actress nomination.

I can proudly report that I have seen Spongebob and am basing my disappointment on my opinion after actually seeing the show - not writing it off as others have.

I am glad that others have enjoyed the show - I was personally disappointed with it.

I have only seen 3 musicals of this season - Mean Girls, frozen, and Spongebob - and personally enjoyed Mean Girls the best. I understand that I am in the minority here.

I wonder the same thing.  And ill be the forst to admit when i heard the idea i thought it was the stupidest thing id ever heard.  But i went to see it because good or bad i couldnt chime in until i saw it.   And at intermission i uttered three words i have never before in my life said.  "I was wrong"  the direction is ingenious and deserves a nomination and win the performances as well.  I mean ethan slater et all had me hooked to see if they would succeed thats no small feat.  Ive never watched spongebob not a fan but i was in.  And a stupid ass smile the entire time.  Every aspect of the show hooked me and turned me right around.  I for one am rooting for this one.  Ive seen all the musicals this year.  And while id be happy with a couple in each category. This is the one ill be cheering.  And i think they should win a special tony for best use of home depot.  Just for the chop to the top and volcano scene.   Go see it.

Are you basing your theory on the success of Great Comet also receiving a ton of nominations and staying open through Labor Day?

In all fairness Comet did get a big boost in sales up to the Tony's and after until Josh left.

It was only after that it dipped until Ingrid came in.

Did it? It was pulling about $1M most weeks before nominations, and then went up to $1.1M after, but it was also Groban's last few weeks, too, so kind of hard to extrapolate that the Tony nominations played a role. And if they did, that role seemed to disappear around the same time as Groban.

I'm basing my theory off of the target audience that Spongebob is trying to get tickets from (especially people not in the know or on these boards) and what their perception will be of seeing advertisements for the whole month of May saying it is the most nominated show of the season.

May is always a big press month for all new shows still running, not just to get ahead and win the Tony race in June, but on a greater scheme for shows to take advantage of the image of being potential winners that people want to see and will hopefully boost ticket sales. All before Tony night where 80% of all nominees become losers.

Those posters and marquees bragging a show's number of nominations have a shelf life of one month. After that only some get to brag wins.

But I do agree, haterobics. I see Spongebob having a fate of great comet or groundhog day.

Thats totally fair...not every show is loved by everyone.  Hell i know ive been attacked for it but i didnt love the bands visit.  I mean at all but god knows im in the minority on that one and i know it will win awards.

We all get to root for out fave and yell at the tv when the other one wins. .thats the fun.  I find the tonys so much more fun when anything can happen and its not a foregone conclusion.  A year ago the thought of hearing the award for....goes to spongebob the musical would make me cringe but now if be quite happy for the underdog.

all_that_jazz, I agree with you about The Band's Visit. I personally hated it, I was bored and almost walked out. I can appreciate the artistry of the production, and the good performances, but I was bored. I had way more fun at Spongebob and Mean Girls

I was visiting around that time and it wasn't on Tkts for about a month and if it was it was only single tickets occasionally throughout the day. Dunno why the money didn't go up much, maybe discounts after the Noms were announced?

For the last few weeks of Josh all the prices also went up when trying to buy on Telecharge.

Putting aside why those would be the three musicals you picked, Mean Girls would seem to be the strongest of those three. I didn't see Frozen, but I'd imagine that in the third position?

I would honestly rank the 3 that I’ve seen as

1. Mean Girls

2. Frozen

3. Spongebob

I know that’s controversial on these boards too. I agree with a lot of the opinions on here that say frozen left a lot to be desired. But if we’re talking musicals as a whole, I enjoyed frozen a lot more than spongebob. It was just structured a lot better and made for a better musical than what they tried to put together for a plot in spongebob. I left the sponge thinking it can’t be compared to other movie adaptations like shrek or frozen because those shows have one consistent plot and throughline.

Spongebob tries to chase every mouse and tried to cram in a whole television series worth of character development into 2 hours so to me, every song stood ok on its own but did not come together to make what I would call a good musical story. I understand that the songs were written by different artists but jeez, at least make be believe there was ever a meeting to try to turn these ingredients into a meal.

I had a good time though. In my opinion, spongebob was a fun show, but not a good musical.

I think it's honestly between Band's Visit and Mean Girls for best musical. Band's Visit touched my soul in a breathtaking and honest way (beautiful score to boot), but I also had SO much fun at Mean Girls. The book is hysterical, the cast is PHENOMENAL, and several of the songs were catchy. Definitely the best two shows I saw on my recent trip to NYC. I think Spongebob will be nominated for best musical, but I can't see it wining. I'd be VERY surprised if Frozen is nominated for best musical. What a mess.

Taking in all the theater awards including any the bands visit received last year the total now stands at...

38 spongebob. 29 bands visit

Soooo Spongebob is the most nominated of the season.

True. However I was referring to Tony nominations, and I am also glad that Mean Girls at least gets to share the quote with Spongebob. Glad to see the nominators are not completely delirious.

However I bet if that rule about categories with 9 or more eligible nominees automatically getting 5 nominees instead of 4 in the past did not apply this year, Spongebob would have had the same amount of nominees and Mean Girls would have gotten less.
