Per SO’s recent video, Spring Awakening is rumored to be returning to nyc with a major revival in the 2026/27 season HOWEVER, in a rare twist, despite it going to be an all-star revival with an all star cast and weighty creative team, IT WILL NOT BE COMING TO BROADWAY. It will instead be playing at Studio Seaview and will be directed by Tony award winner Danya Taymor (The Outsiders, John Proctor is the Villain)

If I had a dollar for every time this person said there was going to be a Spring Awakening revival coming to NYC, I could probably produce my own at this point.

I mean it is the 20th anniversary, so I expected something big to happen. The only thing that sounds odd about this to me is the mention of big names being involved, given the age of the actors they cast in the original/tour. Gen Z theatre fans just barely missed this show, and they're aware that it was an event of sorts for a lot of millennials, like Rent was for Gen X. I think there's an appetite, and I think they can generate an insane amount of buzz holding open calls/tiktok auditions.

Isn't that not called a revival and just... another production? Revival has a specific connotation...

Call me crazy because this is obviously just a theory, but I remember Groff saying he had an idea to reunite with Lea for their friendship anniversary. Could this be it? Groff obviously is in Stratford until the beginning of November, but after? SO says it’s star-studded, but maybe the stars are the parents and the kids will be newbies (which is really the way this show should be).

In another video he seems to be suggesting that Cynthia Erivo will be doing a revival of Passion this season.

Theyre doing an all star revival with heavy hitting creative team, and then performing it in a theater with a *300 person capacity*? Talk about selfless producers (unless, of course, its coming to Seaview to generate sold out buzz and then move to Bway after...)

I think people are interpreting all-star casting as A-listers, but it's important to note that he also refers to Little Shop using all-star casting. With all due respect to those performers, they do get some theatre-known talent and smaller stars with followings, but hardly any marquee names.

Considering the student roles have historically been cast with performers in their teens and early twenties, I wonder who would qualify as "all star casting" even if we are including theater names.

There was previously an idea to do a revival staging with the original cast (Groff, Michele, everyone) at the Atlantic a couple years ago. But those big reunion plans fell apart when Michele booked Funny Girl and then Groff started prepping for Just in Time. Perhaps this reunion is being repurposed for Studio Seaview? But it felt like a project that was specific to the Atlantic (where the show originated in NYC), so maybe this is just wishful thinking and its a brand new, unrelated staging.
