i wasn’t expecting ciara to be cast as the older nettie. i was assuming that anika noni rose would get the role. we’ll see how she does

Vanessa Williams would be an amazing Shug as well.

Just a personal opinion... I am not crazy about the casting of Henson as Shug. I actually think Ciara could pull it off. My first choice would have been Stephanie Mills. Physically she is not the same as the women cast in the part in the past, but I am sure her acting would be fine and she would sing the hell out of it. She is still sounding great and looks fabulous.

i think taraji will do a fantastic job as shug. she has the chops. but i also think tichina arnold would been an amazing choice

Here is hoping Henson will do a good job. Wow, Arnold never crossed my mind but yes, she would have been an amazing choice.

Thanks for this. I missed it on the previous page. My first thought is that they wanted a bigger name.

I have enjoyed Henson in some of her movies and loved her in "Empire". Did not care for her in "Annie" which is probably why I am not crazy about her casting in this.

if ciara is gonna sing african homeland i really hope she pulls it off. i worry because her vocals are very subpar compared to everyone else. i wish her all of the best

Ciara’s voice is weak at best and as far as her acting experience….well if you haven’t seen “Mama, I want to sing” don’t. Interestingly that also was a stage-to-screen adaptation, yet they didn’t have her sing at all on the soundtrack. 

This casting baffles me.

Ciara has a couple of good songs, but as an actress or television personality, I just don't get it. She's barely above "meh" for me. Yet she's always hosting something or other. She's gonna get swallowed up whole by the rest of the talent in that movie.

Ciara can't sing. She 90% of the time uses a track/lip-sync. Don't understand her casting unless they'll have the chorus sing all of African Homeland.

even halle bailey who plays the younger nettie is a way better vocalist than ciara. like how do you go from halle to ciara lol

it has been announced that aunjanue ellis will be joining the movie. she will be playing the role of mama, who is celie and nettie’s mother. she is the embodiment of the “great ancestor” and the source of both of her daughter’s strength and perseverance. wow the casting in this movie is top tier

i find it intriguing as well.

i am impressed at some of the casting choices.

however - i do have reservations about ciara for the same reasons others have stated.
