If the studio is confident about the film, expect to see it play Labor Day film festivals like Toronto or Venice. (Probably not Cannes, which is in May, if the movie comes out in December.)

colman domingo said in a recent interview that he cried at the end of his ADR session, he says that the film is a masterpiece. he also said that danielle delivers one of the top performances of the year in this film and that fantasia and taraji gave extraordinary performances. my excitement for this movie continues to elevate.

I want to believe this will do well, but with every movie premiere continuing to fall short I have my doubts.

This is... such a weird statement. What does it even mean? There are literally hundreds of movies that get released in year.

I'm excited as well, but this is the kind of stuff that every actor/director says about their current project. They may not be lying but they are more than a little biased :)

If you mean in terms of box office, it is a sad state that it's a rare that most movies have small openings unless it's a superhero, sci-fi, or horror film. But there is enough awareness of this IP, I think, to create some curiosity. It's a classic story already, and it has a musical following, that it'll prove stronger debuting that others.

Ultimately depends on how much it costs to make. No offense meant but there are no "Stars" in this movie outside of Taraji meaning the budget will likely be a bit more reasonable. However! What exactly do we need this movie to have a good box office showing in the grand scheme? Everyone decries when a Movie Musical does poorly that it's death of the artform but they continue to get made and bulk of them have been financial failures. Movie Musicals are better served to be picked over with a fine toothed comb as to what gets a movie instead of one doing bombastic business and the industry taking the exact wrong lesson and fast track every successful show of the last 15 years to the screen.
This movie was created to serve as an awards movie, and a prestige movie, and a vanity project for the producers. It'll be fine if financially it doesn't pan out. I certainly hope we were expecting the Alice Walker Cinematic Universe to start here? And as for movies that are making the billions, they're the ones bank rolling these movies so I wouldn't roll my eyes too hard at them.

i predict that this movie will sweep the oscars in 2024. this would make up for the robbery of the original film

you are so lucky. how were you able to catch a screening?

Just like the 1985 film, that really didn’t have “stars” either and the film did well in the box office. No one will expect The Color Purple to gross billions, it’s in a competitive month with Wonka, and Aquaman however the film will definitely hold its own as it has its own fan base and will most definitely be in Oscar contention, if not front runners. Keep in mind rules have changed for Best Picture starting in 2024…

i do wonder this too… Celie is the perfect Oscar role. Cynthia’s path for an Oscar could be harder since she passed on The Color Purple

someone who worked on the movie told me that this movie is like the broadway musical but it’s on a grander scale and it’s more polished. this movie is truly gonna be on a different level.

i find it interesting that warner bros has two high profile musical films coming out at the same time in wonka and the color purple. and the new aquaman movie will be out around the same time too. they should move at least one of the films for a thanksgiving release

Oscar Season is probably why it's coming out around Christmastime.

She would've been up for Wicked around the same time casting was happening for this. She and Ariana have also been in London preparing for that film since spring of last year. Before TCP was finished filming. She would've had to choose.

This actually isn't true. The Color Purple had already wrapped before rehearsals for Wicked. Also, it was quietly known that Fantasia had gotten the role before Cynthia and Ariana were announced. (Fantasia was officially announced in 2/2023 but the New York Post had posted about it in October/November of 2021 in their 2022 predictions post.
The actress playing young Celie revealed that auditions for TCP started as early as January 2021 (She originally audition for older Celie - Fantasia told producers no several times + she was pregnant). I just don't think Cynthia was in consideration, which kind of makes sense when you consider the reaction to her as Harriet and Aretha from black audiences.
