Maybe I'm misremembering the situation, but don't the comments being made here about Zane Phillips sound eerily similar to those made about Luke Evans when his casting in RHS was announced?

Might just be ... he was pretty easy on the eyes when Maya Rudolph was banging him on Loot. Since the relationship is now gay, someone like that could bring interesting energy to the role.

Not sure why everyone is so down on Zane Phillips. He has been fine in the TV stuff I’ve seen him in. Not seen him on stage, but seems like he’s typecast as a himbo (for obvious reasons).
I hope he knocks it out of the park, and starts to get more challenging role offers.

The difference is Evans actually had considerable musical theatre experience. Zane does not. In fact, he… doesn’t seem to have any.

That's not true, pre-pandemic I saw him as Link Larkin in Hairspray at North Shore Music Theater up outside of Boston. He has a great voice and I thought he really stood out in that cast.

He worked regionally before he started in TV and film. Not claiming he’s some casting coup, but I’ve heard him sing and he has a really lovely voice.

I stand corrected that he has none; it's not info that first comes up when looking him up. But he still has considerably less experience than Evans.

it just shows to go you that that difference makes no difference when it comes to slamming actors the second they're cast in a show.

I love Kevin, but he is not even remotely the right type for El Gallo, and it is unlikely any of them will understudy each other in such a small company.

ZANE PHILLIPS - Go The Distance (from Hercules)
He has a BFA in musical theater from Elon University (2015) and a background performing in stage productions.

There used to be another video on the internet of Zane singing a lovely ballad when he was a bit younger before he bulked up. It was either recorded at a school he was attending or a space similar to 54 below. I am thinking it was a Jason Robert Brown song. Maybe someone else remembers this. At any rate count me in for 1 ticket. I am happy he will be challenging himself by taking on a lead role on Broadway! And a musical! I actually was surprised that he didn’t play the teacher in O’Mary, but then maybe they asked him, and he declined.

Zane worked almost exclusively in regional theatre until he booked Fire Island at which point he pivoted to TV/film. But he has credits from Serenbe, Maltz Jupiter, North Shore, the Jack O'Brien Sound of Music tour, and others. Plus a BFA from Elon. If you really want to get specific, he actually does have more theatre credits than Luke Evans.
