Re: THE HEART previews (Off-Broadway)

Getting back from tonight’s opening where I was seated just an arm’s length away from Jesse Eisenberg and Justin Paul. Party was at Hard Rock and the energy was infectious.

It’s not a perfect show, but a damn good one as is - our new COME FROM AWAY. They’ve got some money pull quotes from Vincentelli to build on from here.

I need that cast album yesterday.

This seems to be largely flying under the radar right now, which I find a little odd.

Could it be intentional "marketing'? To BURST on the scene--and create BUZZ/demand? Esp if it decides to transfer to Bway--and then need to compete with Paddington/Warriors/Galileo/Wanted and whatever else decides to open?

Re: THE HEART previews & reviews (Off-Broadway)

I saw this the other night and thoroughly enjoyed it. I think for an off Broadway musical in a smaller space, it’s wildly ambitious and I really respect it for that and it’s originality. Joaquina is giving the best performance I think I’ve ever seen her give and it’s so nice to see Heidi back in a musical. If I had one note to improve this show, I HATED Heidi’s 11 o’clock number. I wanted to cry in that moment but ended up kind of rolling my eyes at some of those lyrics. She really deserves better in that scene. But overall, I’ve been recommending it to people and hope this run does very well.

Honestly the more competition on Broadway, the better…

Tony noms will probably include:

Paddington
Warriors
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

the unknowns will be Galileo, Dolly, Purple Rain, Wanted and possibly The Heart for the final slot.

Also, it says a lot about a new musical when a few of the songs that have not been recorded yet have stayed with me the following morning. For me, those were "Drift Away," "Mend the Living," and both of Juliette's numbers.

Catalano is spot-on about some of the lyrics though, they range wildly from simple and succinct to banal and seemingly AI-generated.

I don't think it's odd. Off Broadway is quite over stuffed this Fall. There's a lot of buzzy things to compete with. The show will have to earn its attention. I hear it's very good and cannot wait to see it. I still think every show doesn't have to transfer to Broadway to be successful - especially without any major hype around it. A critics pick is no longer major hype.

I was second row yesterday and did not miss a thing.
