Didn't disagree with any of those sentiments, but the level at which people are ready to pounce is exhausting. Like yeah, miscast entirely. It's boring. There's plenty else about this production to critique in a thoughtful way. Let's try some depth as getatme's review has.

I personally like the different sound from both of them. I can't even listen to the Adam Kantor/Betsy Wolfe recording-it's like Kids Bop Last Five Years-just nothing but all around schmacting. But I know I'm in the severe minority. Luckily there will still be 100s of productions of this show for years to come so everyone can rest easy.

Just saw this. The worst part of this show is White’s direction, an overall mess. Adrienne Warren will be nominated for this. She’s spectacular.
I was able to score tickets from TodayTix rush today. My overall thought is that anyone that loves this score will have a great time. Adrienne Warren is also incredible.
For anyone speculating, their paid social ads have been updated with "THRU 6.22 ONLY" messaging, so no dice on this extending unless one of the celebs they were trying to poach pulls through. But I'm sure ATG is able to fill the theater quickly.

Saw this last night. Agee the direction was not great. To be honest (we got tickets because my daughter loves this show, but my husband and I knew nothing about the premise of the show going in) we were slightly confused. We found it meandering and disjointed. I wanted to like the actors, but even struggled with that. I thought it was just me but afterwards my husband confirmed what I was thinking when he said, Were both of the actors flat on several notes? Maybe were both having off nights but their voices simply didn't wow me (though don't get me wrong, there were flashes of perfection by Warren), nor do I think the actors meshed well at all. I was glad it was a short 90 minutes, but it's an unremarkable, unmemorable show.

so I was there tonight and I echo what a lot of people are saying Nick Jonas sounds too pop for this score. He’s a fine singer and sure he’s talented but I just don’t think he is right for this role. I thought that the chemistry he had with Adrienne Warren wasn’t as bad as everybody thought and to be honest, I kind of liked the interaction between the two characters. I thought it had just the right amount of interaction and at the right moments to help tell the story I think if you saw this without knowing how the show works, it would definitely be a confusing show to watch. as for Adrian Warren holy moly can that woman sing I was up in the balcony and it felt like her voice hit me in the face. She’s doing all the heavy lifting in this show and seems to have way more invested emotionally. You believe that her Cathy is going through all the emotions during the relationship, whereas Nick’s Jamie just comes off, looking like an unemotional dick. Who knows maybe that’s a direction choice. I definitely think that Adrian Warren will get a Tony nomination this season, but unfortunately, with some of the other actresses in the mix, I don’t know if it’s enough to get her second Tony.
the stage door was fairly civilized as it was a Thursday night.Adrienne Warren is a lovely human and they both took time to go the whole way down the line. Overall I enjoyed the show, but my main reason for going was to see Adrienne Warren sing the roof off the Hudson which she did
On Sunday June 15th at 7pm Nasia and Noah will be going on. I'm so happy they are giving them a performance. Prices are more reasonable, obviously.

I'm so happy they're doing this!!
Finally seeing this tonight - anybody hear any rumblings of a cast album? Feels weird, both with Nick Jonas being attached (streaming numbers) and it being the Broadway premiere of this very beloved musical, to not have one announced yet.

It is interesting to me that they didn't get a cast recording together early on -- it feels like something they'd have already done if they wanted to. With less-than-stellar reviews and sales, it's difficult to justify a new recording when we have several great recordings of the score already, but I'd love to have Adrienne's I Can Do Better Than That captured. She is such a phenomenal talent.
Who’s going to see Nasia and Noah on together tonight?
It looks basically sold out tonight which would be a first for this show, in a long time. Look at Tuesday nights availability and there’s NOTHING sold. Thats just crazy.
The standby performance is the first time I've ever lost with this show on LuckySeat!

I was there tonight and it was electric. The audience was insane, in the best way. Like a rock concert. And the two of them didn’t let us down. Both were brilliant. I know Nasia has had a handful of performances, but it was Noah’s first. You would never have known. A performance I will remember for a long time.
Seconded. Noah and Nasia gave spectacular performances. I understand the qualms people have with the production, but the performances were top notch and the score speaks for itself!
I am so happy the production worked together to give these two a dedicated performance. I’m not as “in the loop” as I once was, but I’m pretty sure this is a pretty novel thing to do. I’m glad it paid off for them with such a well sold show.

Saw this production during previews and thought it was poorly-directed with 2 performers who were completely miscast for various reasons. One of my least favorite nights in a theatre this year.
Tonight was an exceptional evening in the theatre. Conversely, one of my favorite evenings in a theatre this year. It's still a poorly-directed production but with 2 star-making performances to focus on, the noise fell away.
The audience was full of family, friends, industry members, and many others. And each actor was greeted with a warm reception and incredible support every step of the way.
Nasia Thomas is just an absolute star. She is still not really an ideal Cathy, she has such power and presence right from the start, but that spark is what makes her so special to watch. It's so clear this woman loves singing, and when she opens her mouth and that voice pours out of her, you feel every last ounce of that love. She is funny, charming, emotional, and just gorgeous. The best-sung Cathy I've heard since Sherie.
Noah Kieserman was really just wonderful. Charming and funny with clear, powerful voice. It is the most sympathetic I've ever found Jamie, he seemed truly hurt by his own actions and how their story ended. It was also the first time I've thought Jamie's book-reading didn't feel overly pretentious. It felt like a true moment of Jamie realizing what his life had become.
What really sold the evening is Nasia and Noah have personality to spare. Both of them were just overflowing with it from the second they stepped onstage to the moment the curtain came down. And their chemistry was beautiful. Warren and Jonas do not feel well-matched, I never bought them as a couple. Thomas and Kieserman seemed to truly love one another, and while Warren's Cathy seemed about ready to throttle Jamie during Schmuel, Thomas's Cathy seemed to be having a good time following Kieserman's Jamie.
Overall, it really was just a wonderfully electric night and I'm so glad the show did this and gave these two a chance to perform together. I hope important people were in the audience tonight and give both of these actors the starring roles they deserve. Nasia especially feels like an extraordinary talent on the cusp of a huge career.

Nasia and Noah’s chemistry made this confusingly directed production work. You could tell they loved each other. As actors they filled in the blanks with nuance. Seeing it this time around I got it. They were spectacular.

I don't think I've read one great review about this show, but any word on cast recording being released?
Saw this tonight - yikes. And I ADORE L5Y.
Agree with the general consensus but one thing I didn’t see mentioned is Warren is almost too charming/sympathetic. The genius of the original show is that you can see the faults in both Jamie AND Cathy and how the relationship was always doomed. With no visible faults in Warren’s Cathy (besides interpreting the actual lyrics she’s singing) it really paints Jamie as the villain. And with Jonas’ performance so flat you come away not even hating him, just feeling nothing.

I went to the matinee on wednesday and yeesh.
This was a baffling bad afternoon and the audience was not there for it, very polite applause after most of the numbers but it was a LONG 85 minutes.
Whitney White usually is an excellent director but so many choices here just showed a real distain for the material. The biggest head scratcher is the multiple scenes where Jamie and Kathy interact with each other. The reason the end and The Next Ten Minutes are such a punch is because they are so isolated from each other for the rest of the show. The fact this production just wholesale rips off how they did "The Schmuel Song" in the movie was also infurating. The red and blue lighting also was such an on the nose creative decision that is a sign of a director not trusting their audiences to be smart enough to follow what is happening.
Jonas is just totally flat and Warren is singing half of her part like it is an opera.
I could go on and on but what a bummer, this is a pretty hard show to mess up but boy was this production a screwup.
