Direction of a new musical, especially in this case, is not just staging (most of that was done by his choreography team). Arden chose the writers and the band, that makes the show mediocre - and not fit the 80s material (with exception of one song they hock to make it seem so). He likes tech so much so he claims lighting design credit (pairing himself with an extremely skilled designer who would've done the same work on her own, with or without him). This ego title grab, for a director, is quite something - considering the director shapes the show with the designer as is. it's actually pretty shocking to take that from a female lighting designer. The key here is the set and hiring a good lighting designer who did all the work, plotting, cueing etc.
After this and Versailles, it's grand spectacle over attention to the material /smart choices.
"
I wonder what Arden did to you to inspire the enormous grudge you hold against him. It is pathological at this point.

Having seen this show again last night, the biggest difference between “Lost Boys” and “Versailles” is that when the audience is walking out of “Lost Boys”, they have huge smiles on their face as opposed to weary looks of relief they can finally go home. I’m not saying either one is a masterpiece but one surely is more of a crowd pleaser than the other.

the comparison between the two fails immediately. yes, one could plausibly enjoy the score to QOV more, I guess, or stan Chenoweth, opinions are opinions and all are valid, BUT
the very premise of QOV was gross. it glorified and took minimal shots at the epitome of american greed. it was impossible to root for the vile characters. hard to make that claim re Lost Boys, which is if anything TOO eager to be PC and amicable to the crowds. its apples and rotten apples.

It’s giving Sweaty Oracle obsession. You two should start a band called the Lost Boys. It would explain most of your hot takes. Lost.

Hmm interesting, Death of a Salesman just made $300,000 more than Lost Boys last week. Check out those people’s faces.

No. It's "giving" truth - and reality. understand the business and the form - These are facts on how shows work - and what didn't work with The Lost Boys is the director's choices from the beginning that created mediocre material - that cannot be blamed on anyone else but said person - even if attempted coverage by tech.
Don't worry, once again, no one is after you or your show. It's just the reality of WHY the show is mediocre and with other choices from the begging, could have been excellent. It's the director's choices in the writing and band.
Arden is a good technical director (oracle is hateful) - but the choices have consequences in new musicals built from the ground. A general director and director of new musicalsl - those are now completely in question, and rightfully so.

I saw the show last night through TDF ended up with two tickets on the side of the orchestra row. They were fantastic seats, especially with the reorganization of the palace theater seating I think.
I was really pleasantly surprised with this show. I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would’ve. Shoshana Bean, LJ Benet, and Ali Louis Bourzgui blew me away. and the special effects and the music were pretty nice as well.

Saw this today for the first time, with 2 swings on, and I don't know what to think of it. (3:07 start, 5:37 blackout after "If We Make It Through the Night").
First act was sorta-kinda strong, but the second half amps up the camp and threatens to derail the whole thing. Crowd seemed to love it tho... could've easily used an out-of-town tryout.
Pleasant music, with quite a few standouts and the expected headbangers — and the voices singing it are all pretty strong.
Loved the flying and special effects. Could easily take a Tony in the design department... or two. Shoutout Michael Arden not only for his direction, but also his co-lighting design(!). Who knew?
Stage door wasn't much of a turnout today; it's the end of the week, and they are starting to record their OBCR tomorrow, so they're saving their voices. Signing today was Paul Alexander Nolan, Brian Flores, Dean Maupin, Liesie Kelly, and Carissa Gaughran, who had a big cheering squad of her dance students and their parents in attendance this afternoon.
Sidenote: Jane Krakowski and Alicia Keys were both there tonight.

Preorders for the cast album - to be released via Atlantic Records - start on May 29.
I will start an OBCR thread when release dates are announced.

Agree! The score of Lost Boys isn’t bad… it’s just not memorable and it’s certainly not a “rock” score by any means. I can’t name a single song nor can I hum one.

Watching that Tonight Show performance all I wondered about was if they are all in wigs? Is Ali Bourzgui in a wig, or does he have to do his hair like that for the show?

There’s literally a wig designer on the show…

Ali has very curly dark brown hair. There’s no amount of product in the world that could make his actual hair look like it does in the show. Most Broadway shows use wigs, even if the character has very similar hair to the actor, just to make things more consistent from night to night and from star to understudy.

Was anyone at the Palace this morning? There was a performance of no more monsters outside of the theater with the rescues and Mason as Michael. Just saw it on Instagram. They sound great!

My husband and I attended the evening performance on 5/13/26 and didn’t love this. We saw eight shows during this visit, and The Lost Boys was the only one that disappointed. It wasn’t bad, but overall we didn’t feel that the transition to a musical really did anything to enhance the story. If anything, it often felt like the songs halted the show every time it started to gain momentum. There are some good voices (Shoshana Bean can really sing), but the only musical numbers we found memorable and propulsive were the ones sung by David when he was not performing as a band member.
The evening was a bit of a slog for us until the vampires took Michael to their lair for the first time. The flying/levitation, even though we were able to see some of the wires from our seats, was choreographed well and sometimes almost balletic. Otherwise, from a production design and special effects perspective, it felt like a knockoff of Stranger Things: The First Shadow, and Stranger Things is doing it better. We bought discounted front orchestra tickets; had we paid full price, I would’ve felt that we didn’t get our money’s worth.

Funny, as days go by, this is the only show I want to win Best Musical! Obviously werent many musicals eligible for that category this year. But The Lost Boys was the ONLY new musical where I left the show and immediately wanted to get tickets to return again and was craving a cast album so I could dive into the score.

Didn't really LOVED any, but ''Schmigadoon!'' as a whole is the best option for me.
