Scary, I have found myself checking this thread several times a day. I am glad things didn't get really nasty here. It has been interesting reading the comments.
I don't know the ages of everyone here but it is interesting to read both sides of this conversation. I think for those who were not around for the original stage musical, they don't understand completely where we are coming from on this. However, I do understand that they are ok with the "updating". For me, The Wiz was the updated version. I feel that if they want to make the changes they are making, just do another version of the Wizard of Oz. They are doing The Wiz and I feel they should have stayed much closer to the original. I can remember sitting in the Majestic Theater (and I saw the seat I sat in while watching the Making Of special!) with a great feeling of seeing an all black cast bringing one of my favorite movies to life onstage. I was in awe. And yes, it was updated for the times but not from a former production of The Wiz. I just don't want to see something that was so special to me changed as much as they are changing it. I won't be able to watch the broadcast on Thursday but will hopefully catch it on demand. JMO
I was not born for almost twenty years after the original production, but I think being interested in musical theatre should include being interested in its history and what came before? You can't usually just watch an old show like an old film. But you can LISTEN and piece things together from all the sources out there to get a picture of what a production was like. I think that is one of the greatest joys of being a theater geek, and I think one of the most annoying things about recent trolls here is the assumption that their opinions on any given subject are valid even if they are completely incurious and poorly read on it. (Though I do not think this is generational or something to do with us "millennials"; more a personality difference thing)
So in this case, I completely understand what fans of the original Wiz are saying here. I, too, think there is something a bit odd about trying to update an extremely period-specific update. When I listen to the old cast album, what I enjoy is that sound, of that era. That's what the flavor of the score is; it's in its bones. That doesn't mean I don't think this show will be fun to watch, and I hope it finds a good audience. Still looking forward to Thursday and seeing what they've put together.
Phyllis Rogers Stone said: "I always thought the lyric "He's the Wiz and he lives in Oz" was strange. Like, doesn't everyone Dorothy encounters live in Oz?"
I had the same trouble with them saying "To Oz? To Oz!" in the MGM movie. Because they were already in Oz. They were in Munchkinland, heading for the Emerald City.
Also thought it was weird that the Wizard said, "I am Oz, the Great and Terrible" (in the original book, the adjective was changed to "powerful" for the MGM film). So you're IN Oz, and you're NAMED Oz? I actually loved that they addressed this in the Disney movie "Oz the Great and Powerful," because his name is Oscar Diggs (as Baum later named him as well), and he was called "Oz" for short. And Glinda says that a man with the same name as their land would come to "save" them all. That was a nice way to handle it.
But it sounds like many denizens of this fairy tale land need a good GPS!
Scarywarhhol --- thanks! I will PM you.
uncageg --- I agree with you again!

""Phillypinto Trolls", just more likely than the average poster. We should all keep in mind that we don't know who is really who. To us, everyone else could be a troll."
Call me a scumbag, call me a troll if you like. But don't you dare call me Philly Pinto. That's the lowest of the low. Besides, I'm much more articulate than that stupid pintobean.

Anyway, back on topic....
I'm incredibly excited for this broadcast. "
That's exactly what philly would say, but I don't believe your philly. Philly doesn't seem like a Hamilton fan.
In our millions, in our billions, we are most powerful when we stand together. TW4C unwaveringly joins the worldwide masses, for we know our liberation is inseparably bound.

Well, there's also SuttonRoss but I doubt that and then the fourth option. You know... the Russian who shall not be named. But yes, I would suggest it's pretty much between two or three.
I just laughed at my own post. Hamilton22 adds to these message boards like Donald Trump does. They cast their oponions, I laugh and disagree, but I see a different perspective. Do I like Hamilton22? No. But do I find what he has to say interesting, just like I would a review that I disagree with.
I appoligise for any spelling mistakes. I may be on my mobile. Clumsy fingers and small little touchscreen keys don't mixx. I try to spellcheck, but I may miss something.

I'm 20 years old and I did not see the original production, or its accompanying tour. I saw a recent college level production, one that used the full original version with funky 70's inspired costuming and all the disco flutes a boy could dream of. It wasn't a bit concerned that it wasn't anywhere near 1975 anymore, but embraced the fact that that's the "soul" of this show that was originally labeled "The Super Soul Wizard Of Oz."
What's with the over-kill of promotion for this? I was honestly excited to see the show and welcomed the changes but the advertising is killing it for me. I'm actually sick of hearing about it. The character cards (whatever the hell they are), the endless TV promotions, interviews with the janitor's wife! I love my own mother but if she was promoted as much as this show has been then my love would turn pretty sour.
Is this a standard level of promotion for this sort of production?
Did anyone get the opportunity to read the BWW Interview with Mr. Fierstein. Lord, talk about wanting to reinvent the wheel.
Hopefully, it's good; hopefully, it's entertaining. I've loved Wizard of Oz my whole life but have had questions. I was always a questioning kind of kid. I got to answer all the questions that I had. Where did Dorothy's parents go? There's this girl living with her aunt and uncle... well I killed off the uncle; he doesn't do anything anyway. Do we care about him just sitting on the porch rocking away? You have a girl living with her aunt, and it's never mentioned what happened to her parents. Dorothy's such a victim. She didn't create that storm; she gets taken away. She doesn't kill the witch; the house falls on her. She doesn't kill the other witch; she throws water to save her friend. She's just a victim. I said, "Why should she be just a victim? It's her dream! It's her fantasy!"
So I gave her a story....
HOLD THE PHONE!
YOU gave her a story?!?!?
Gee, and I always though the story was given to her by L. Frank Baum?
He killed off Uncle Henry?!?! How cool of you Harvey! How ingenius! You answered all YOUR questions.
Questions alot of us didn't even have because we were happy with the way the story was originally written. So you basically took the opportunity to use THE WIZ to answer all those questions YOU had as a kid because YOU weren't satisfied with how the story was originally told.
And his reasoning for changing Dorothy's character and motives because HE felt she was a victim?!?!
WHAT A CROCK OF DUNG!
I have never thought of Dorothy as a victim...
So he basically re-imagined THE WIZ......for his damn self!
