"What's with the over-kill of promotion for this? I was honestly excited to see the show and welcomed the changes but the advertising is killing it for me. I'm actually sick of hearing about it. The character cards (whatever the hell they are), the endless TV promotions, interviews with the janitor's wife! I love my own mother but if she was promoted as much as this show has been then my love would turn pretty sour."

I haven't been annoyed with the wiz promotion up until today when that dumb  promo keeps poppin up everytime I enter Broadway world. But the wiz promotion is pretty standard. It's about the same as the into the woods film promotion and the Les Mis film promotion.

I thought the the skit they did on The VOICE was genius, but besides that, I could do without.

"So he basically re-imagined THE WIZ......for his damn self!"

Calm your tits. Harvey has successfully worked on many books.  The guy knows what he is doing. But let's be honest, you scanned that article praying that you could find something to  bitch and moan about.

What's getting me is I'm from the UK (but currently in Australia) so it won't air in either country but every time I come on here, which is rather a lot, it's like "THE WIZ. THE WIZ. THE WIZ. THE WIZ. THE WIZ. THE WIZ. THE WIZ."

Can you not stream it online? I was in Europe for most of last year and I was able to watch Peter Pan online through streaming.

Plannietink, it's the same amount as the other two productions got. In fact, I'd argue it's less than what "Peter Pan Live!" had, no?

But anyway, let's all calm down, lol. Hamilton, if you keep getting picked on, maybe not tell people to "calm their tits" when they weren't even talking to you? I don't have a problem with you. Only on this thread have I ever seen you act somewhat questionably, but let's not start fights with people for fun. Sometimes it's fun to throw shade, but to full out instigate a fight isn't what people wanna see on this thread, or any other, really.

I just finally caught the parade performance and it made me even more excited. Dorothy's costume looked way better than in the promos. And seeing Tamika Lawrence and Asmeret Ghebremichael rocking their solos was quite a treat. Love those ladies!

Cindersgolightly, everything is good. I was just replying to Carlos because he sent me a nasty Pm. But I've never thought I was getting picked on. It's an internet forum after all, I don't take it too seriously.

But lets get back on track and talk about The Wiz.

. Btw, I love your name.

I'd hoped you wouldn't take it too seriously, but you never know. Some people are sensitive and the internet is like a dark void so you never know what's really going on. And thank you! I made this account I believe to vote for some kind of award thing, and so I didn't put too much thought in it at the time. Didn't know I'd enjoy the boards so much!

Personally, I don't think the WIZ would work today if presented as a museum piece. it was a show written in the mid seventies for a mid seventies audience. It was written during the age of Blacksporation. Rememeber Blackula and Timbuktu? How about Blackenstien? The Wiz soared above these others because of the incredible score and acting. The book had jokes in ti that just wouldn't fly today. I don't think I mind them tinkering with the book. Let us wait and see the final product before passing judgement.

This is LESS than what Peter Pan got!? Jeez. I didn't pay much attention to the Peter Pan and Sound of Music. I watched them (*cough* streamed them whilst in some European Hostel *cough*).

I don't know what the word is when advertisers turn away consumers by over-advertising the product but that's what they're doing. Like I said before, I welcomed every change, every casting decision etc. But showing us footage of the show then advertising it as "LIVE!" seems detrimental. I know it WILL be live on the night but it loses the magic knowing it's been filmed and edited already.

I totally get what you mean. I'm having the same experience with "Hamilton" actually, although it's died down. But to inform you: it will actually be live. The stuff they're showing is filmed for commercials and promotional purposes. It is confusing, I agree. But it will be 100% live while airing in the East Coast.

I have always thought Anika Noni Rose would make a good Dorthy! To bad this version didn't happen. I wonder why they didn't use the script that they wrote for 1998 version for the new live broadcast......

http://deadline.com/2015/11/craig-zadan-neil-meron-the-wiz-live-nbc-1201646727/

(I know the link to this article has already been posted, I just thought this was interesting)

Neil Meron: "When we did Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella in 1997 with a multicultural cast [including Brandy, Bernadette Peters, Whitney Houston, Whoopi Goldberg and Jason Alexander], the very next show we planned was The Wiz. This was in 1998 — we had a script written, we were casting, we’d hired Robert Iscove, who’d directed Cinderella as a TV movie forThe Wonderful World Of Disney. Paula Abdul was going to do the choreography and we found an unknown at the time to play Dorothy — the unknown was Anika Noni Rose. Anika was ready to sing “Home” for the Upfronts, at the Palace Theatre."

If that is your complaint, why are you here at all? Most of what you find on the BWW main page happens in NYC. Most of these productions will never be seen outside of the city, yet you don't seem to be complaining about those. Only a small had full of productions get transfered across seas, why view this any differently than the several other productions you must read about here, but will never see?

The reason this is getting so much promotion is because it is a live event that an entire country will get to see. It costs a great deal of money to put on, and NBC wants to ensure as many viewers as possible. Also keep in mind, the promotion for this is not as big as it seems here. It seems like a lot here because BWW is amalgamizing the promotional material into one spot. All of this spread out in the media over the course of a month and a half is no more than any other film would get, and less than something like Star Wars or Hunger Games has been getting.

Looking at the latest dress rehearsal photos, they made a few good last-minute tweaks, like replacing Dorothy's blue jean jacket with a more reddish-orange one. It makes her stand out more from most of the backgrounds.

The sets and costumes are all incredibly lavish and look very expensive. This should be great "eye candy" when it transfers to Broadway in 2016 as well.

I see they've used the device of having the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Lion have Kansas counterparts. It's a nod to the MGM movie, but it's not a copyright infringement on the screenplay. MGM wasn't the first to do that. Even the 1921 silent film (featuring Oliver Hardy as the Tin Man) had Kansas counterparts for Dorothy's friends. So while it's derivative (and wasn't in the 1975 "Wiz), it's not exactly a "steal."

That makes for scary-fast makeup and costume changes, especially for Elijah Kelley.

The performers all seemed focused and energized and ready to go. I think they will be the saving grace for me. Really looking forward to seeing them.

Aside from the industrial look for Evilene's lair, I'm not entirely sure how the set or costume designs for Oz are anything different one would find for The Wizard of Oz. They seem to me devoid of any of the qualities that set The Wiz, as an adaptation, apart.

LOL Liza! He tore me a new one, actually they both did but I was forgiven so I don't think the BJ's will be necessary.
