TLC Musical ‘CrazySexyCool’ Aims For Broadway

I saw it and thought it was in fairly good shape. The three actresses who play the TLC girls are phenomenal, the choreography is amazing and of course the music is awesome. The book is in decent shape, and the girls' led interesting lives, so there's some substance there. How the author wove Unpretty into the story was a highlight for me. There's also a lot packed in and it was almost 3 hours when I saw it still in previews, so it does need some trimming and work. But I think they've got something and if they learn things and make changes from this run and are able to hang on to the three leads, I think it could be one of the better jukebox musicals.

I saw it the night before opening and it was down to about 2:35ish. An acquaintance who saw the first preview reported 2:55, so they've definitely made some trims. They need to make more. It still feels a bit long, the book wanders in places. This is one of the problems that arises when a writer directs their own work - they don't want to lose their darlings. There are at least 15-20 minutes that can be trimmed off of the show that I saw.

Aside from some issues with the book, it really is a very entertaining evening of theatre. The three lead women are all terrific, they carry the show very well. All three of those roles are beasts - vocals, choreography, all of it. I would be very pleased if they stay with the show should it live on after this production.

The choreography is fantastic and beautifully executed. Despite the aforementioned issues with the book, there is still quite a bit that really works and parts of the show are very funny (as well as heartbreaking, as anyone who is familiar with TLC will know).

One thing that I really appreciated about this production - while there are obviously very sad moments in the second act, the show never feels depressing or preachy. Once Lisa dies, much of the show feels more like a celebration of her life that is filled with joy, rather than doom and gloom about how tragic and awful it is. That's what this show needed, and it works well.

I do recommend this production and will probably see it again before it closes.

A shame Chilli had to ruin it by being a transphobic MAGA-supporter.

I’m all for Holli’ Conway and her star on the rise. A sexy standout in everything she does.

I saw her in LEMPICKA and I so wish she had gotten to go on for Rafaela at least once. She’s grown vocally a LOT since 2019.

My exact thought. I was excited about this til that revelation. If we're not supporting Potter reboots, then can't be supporting this.

I have friends there that won't see it for that reason. Even though she tried to explain it off.

I have been a huge fan of theirs since the first album and I would really like to see this. But it has become kind of a Potter situation for me for the most part. Cursed Child was just in town and I didn't see it. I was really curious to see it as a single show. I LOVED it when it was two parts. Now I can't even wear the show tee shirt I bought around my neighborhood or to the bars I go to. Did it once to see the reaction and it sparked "conversation". it has been sitting in the bottom of my clothes hamper!

I was also wondering if Watkins and Thomas were consultants on the show and if they are connected with it in any way. One of them mentioned Broadway, I think, at opening night curtain call.

TLC is my all-time favorite music group. They were once the best-selling girl group of all-time and their Biopic from VH1 is still the highest rated/viewed over a decade later.

That said...in order to last on broadway I always say (jokingly..kinda..) that you need to appeal to Middle-america, the gays, and rich old white people. that said..I cant see any of them wanting to see this. And I dont know if my fellow black folks would come out in large numbers to see this especially since their tour is struggling to sell following Chili's...views.

I should’ve been Blac Chyna.

I'm a gay man and I would see this in a heartbeat. Granted, "Fanmail" was on my record player for a VERY long time. But I think this could find some success on Broadway.

I hope so! I think somewhere small like the Longacre would be ideal.

Count me in as another gay man who would see this in a heartbeat. TLC's music is woven into the fabric that is the soundtrack of my young adulthood.
