I don't think this is critic proof. The reviews will guide people to what they are willing to spend on a cute two person show. The producers are smart and will need to keep advertising and promoting at a reasonable price point so that audiences leave happy with what they spent on a small delightful show. And while Sam is making a nice splashy debut Josh is bringing down the house. Both great performances.

The role &his performance is the most interesting of men in musicals this season so far - our Tony front runner for Lead Actor (and we loved Henry). Tutty just holds this show up with more stage time and 90 minutes ranging from adorably comedic to heart breaking drama."
I have loved Tutty in this production since I saw it in Kilburn. But please. Josh Henry is and will remain the front runner till he wins. And as silly as Chess is, Nicholas Christopher performing Endgame alone beats Tutty in performance!

Considering there may only be 3 new musicals on Broadway this season, “front runner” isn’t really a thing. They’re all giving a very light jog."

Which 4? Wanted isn’t coming this season any longer. QOV, Strangers, Lost Boys and….?"
SCHMIGADOON!."
Just five new musicals this season has to be a all-time low. Wondering if something like BENJAMIN BUTTON slides in because of this. Or BULL DURHAM.

I saw Schmigadoon during it's KC run and while I had fun, I don't think it's a Best Musical contender. From what I've seen Benjamin Button is very British and we've seen pretty mixed success for those on Broadway.
So so far, Two Strangers probably has a decent chance. Funny how last season was so, so heavy with new musicals and this season is so sparse.

Right now it feels like the only open musical house is the Majestic (the Phantom must have put a curse on it.) They were counting on Purple Rain before they had seen it. I assume they are trying to get yet another star driven play or go to their back ups Galileo or Wanted. None of the small houses are going to decide before the holidays, end of January soonest, which makes it hard to bring in a show that isn't off broadway and ready...Illinoise/Dead Outlaw model. Hearing grumblings of another bigger musical waiting on a shake up at one of the houses. But those seem like the only new musical paths forward at the moment - unless Lost Boys delays over financial concerns. Shubert may end up with just Two Strangers as its only original musical this year. Probably 4-7 new musicals if everything fell into place. Guessing 5.

It feels like a lot of those were in the pipeline and as their budgets grew, they kept believing they could make it back. Now, we know the market can’t support most of these budgets. And as it’s been pointed out, the theatres available or coming available are all huge, and thus, a huge risk.

I think these are pretty good reviews, and about what was expected. The BWW roundup looks far more positive than Didtheylikeit.

If this ends up running for a long time, who would replace Sam? Does it need to be a British actor? My first thought was Charlie Stemp, but I wonder if he has aged out of this type of role.

Come on the reviews weren’t bad, it even got a critic pick from the NYT. This is no Tammy Faye.
Given it is only a two handed, it wouldn’t be expensive, this could pull 6-8 months, get on the US Tour circuit and re-open off Broadway.

I still think Benjamin Button would be a home run if it opened this season. It's the best of what we have so far.
They have appeared to learn their lesson with last Spring' many embarrassments. I think a good sparse season is perfectly fine for patrons, and it's very much preferred to a complete oversaturation of garbage shows.

Looking through Wikipedia, the 94-95 season appears to have had only two new musicals - Sunset Blvd and Smoky Joe's Cafe. I think I've read that they almost cancelled the category that year.
