Does anyone know if The Inheritance was ever recorded and if so, are there plans to release it? Or does someone have movie rights?
No. And I don’t believe Lincoln Center got to record it either, due to the shutdown.

What was the video that was sent to voters? Was it just a house monitor recording? There was a clip they made its way online, IIRC.
While no official recording exists, the show has been documented both audibly and visually.

The shutdown happened the Wednesday of its final week, it would’ve been recorded before then.
I was at the final performance the night before Broadway shut down, and there were cameras all over recording it. They had already done the taping for Lincoln Center (I believe) so I don't know what this was for, but I hope it's released at some point! Especially as one of the actors climbed over me while making his way to the stage (showing up wasted to the wedding).
The play has HBO miniseries written all over it.
The NYPL website doesn’t list it as being filmed, that’s why I say that. An employee of the library posts here sometimes so maybe he’ll see this and chime in.
I asked a friend of mine who was in the cast a few months ago if they planned to release a filmed version of the play and he said "not that I'm aware of", but who knows if the higher ups have other plans.

The show was recorded and will be released ala Angels In America as an audiobook/audio play. Either an Audible exclusive or as an audiobook on disc/digital.

AIA has also been released through video, as it's currently available to watch if you have a National Theatre at Home subscription.

Yes, unfortunately The Inheritance has not been filmed for release as such.

I do believe that the Theatre on Film and Tape collection recorded Part One and Part Two of "The Inheritance" at the show's final two performances on Broadway, Wednesday afternoon and evening, March 11, 2020. The shutdown happened the next day, and "The Inheritance" had already been scheduled to close on Sunday, March 15, 2020.
This means that the "Inheritance" videos at TOFT feature (excellent) replacement Tony Goldwyn as Henry Wilcox, rather than the originator of the role in London and NY, John Benjamin Hickey, who had departed the production to direct "Plaza Suite."
I have no idea if the "Inheritance" videos are available to watch yet.
TOFT doesn’t list it as existing in their catalog and ther listings are updated to have things that were filmed very recently so it’s a mystery.

Sorry, but you're mistaken. TOFT did not tape The Inheritance. (I'm the library employee mentioned above, the one who occasionally posts here.) The last show taped before the shutdown was The Soldier's Play. Prior to that, only one other show was taped in March 2020, Charles Busch's The confession of Lily Dare. Those were the last two pre-shutdown tapings for the archive.
Incidentally, almost everything TOFT has taped since 1970 has been cataloged, with only a handful of exceptions; what that means is, if you don't find a record of it in the NYPL's online catalog, we probably don't have it. I can say that with authority, because I've been TOFT's primary cataloger since 1999.

And a hearty THANK YOU for doing the Lord's work! TOFT is truly a national treasure, and civilization is better off for preserving these important pieces of culture.
Sorry to thread hijck but I just realized that means there were other shows there's no record of, including Ivo's West Side. Damn shame.

Many thanks -- it's so nice to hear that!

True -- because of the shutdown, several planned tapings had to be called off. (A Soldier's Play just barely made it under the wire, taped without an audience, because the company really wanted to get it recorded.) In some cases, TOFT was able to tape shows which resumed in 2021, like Girl from the North Country and a few others. But West Side story was not among them, sorry to say.
I am so sorry I missed the stage production. I was so hoping there was a taped version somewhere. I was also curious to see Andrew Burnap before Camelot opens.

But seriously, of course there's no one answer to that question -- depends on if it's a play vs a musical, how many in the cast, what deals the creatives and any Stars might have, how many cameras, where and when it's being filmed....
West End production? It was the same production and direction including all of the NYC leads plus Vanessa Redgrave - for Lois Smith. The Noel Coward/Young Vic ensemble was far superior to that of the NYC cast in supporting roles. The pinnacle production/cast.

For TOFT, it's a question of how many camera operators are involved. Nowadays for Off-Broadway shoots, there tend to be two cameras, while for Broadway shoots there can be three, four, five or more cameras. Even the inexpensive shoots can cost in the low five-figures.
