I heard that Leigh Ann Larkin was also being considered for Evelyn Nesbitt in "Ragtime"...if so what a wonderful position for her to be in to get to chose between two great parts. I'd go with Petra.
Well, she was Evelyn Nesbit. It's just a question of whether she stays Evelyn Nesbit (which is basically dainty June all over again) or takes a role in the first major revival of a beloved Sondheim musical.

Will the character of Malla be in this production?
I don't believe so.

I think the delayed casting news just has to do with the massive amount of high-profile productions all announcing their cast lists pretty much at the same time (Ragtime, ALNM, In the Next Room, etc.) and they all want to have as many very talented people as possible.
My roommate is interning with the agency that Leigh Ann Larkin is with and when we were talking about "Ragtime" I was explaining that I was excited to see her as Evelyn Nesbit, but she told me that she's going with Night Music instead. I know I haven't heard it directly from the horse's mouth but I feel like it's got some merit to it. If it is true, her "The Miller's Son" is gonna be amazing.
I've heard from MANY places that Waddingham is out. Equity won't let her over, becuase she: a) wasn't the reason for the transfer b) wasn't considered until after Brantley's review
The last I heard was that a theatre name is being courted. My money is on Bernadette, she's said she has a big Broadway project coming in the fall, and outside of a play (which isn't her style), or a concert (which I wouldn't call big), unless she's going to be Roxie in Chicago, this is it.
It's all speculation at this point. There is only one person I trust on this board for information regarding casting. And they seldom post in these threads.

When did she say she had a "big" Broadway project coming?
Also, she is cast in Arthur Laurents' play..are these separate projects? (is the play a limited run or something? I don't know)
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
Regardless of how Peters would be in the role, does no one else think it would be absurd having her and Aaron Lazar (if he is indeed cast) as lovers? Bernadette does look great, but I don't think that would work at all.
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.
The play will be running until November, so she could still be in it I guess. Not sure how she'd manage a full time job and rehearsals at the same time, though.

The American actress rumored to be their alternate choice if Waddingham is denied by Equity is by no means a "name" anywhere outside the theatrical community.
Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.
