"Law Elle" isn't any more important than "Sorority Elle". The entire point of the show is to show her transformation. If there's no accurate portrayal of where Elle started, why should the audience care how much she's "changed", or where she ends up? Sorry, but the idea only one side of her character being good is enough to compensate for her complete lack of understanding of the humor in Elle's earlier scenes is almost ridiculous to me. Elle's transformation is the single most important thing in that show, and if Autumn cannot pull off both sides of Elle, as well as her growth, then she most certainly doesn't deserve to win. I actually thought Natalie was the best at giving both ends of the spectrum, acting wise, too bad she didn't LOOK more like Emma, or Bailey, 'cause then she'd have run away with the competition.
I think Autumn would be a different sort of Elle, certainly, but she comes across as professional and I think could bring a goofy sensibility to her own portrayal of Elle.
'"Contrairiwise," continued Tweedledee, "if it was so, it might be; and if it were so, it would be; but as it isn't, it ain't. That's logic."'
~Lewis Carroll
Autumn gave a bad, confusing performance of "Serious," but her "Omigod You Guys" was my favorite of the bunch (line stumble aside). I think we need to see more before writing it off that she can't play Elle as a sorority girl.
She isn't a good actress either. It seems all she can do well is dance. I have no clue why she got this far. She's been turning out bad and mediocre performances every audition.
Autumn's performance of "Serious" wasn't bad, but I agree it was confusing. She nailed some quirks but in other parts of the song she fell flat. I think the problem was consistency, but she had the building blocks for a good song.
I'm surprised that age is such a factor for everyone in regards to Lauren. I didn't know she was 18 until this last episode. She looks like a recent college grad. In her auditions with Richard Blake and Andy Karl, she definitely does not look too young to be with either of them.
Lauren's weaknesses? Dancing? I strongly disagree! I think dancing is her strongest suit. Her weakness is probably her singing, although it is not bad at all. Squeaky and a bit shouty at times, yes, but not bad. I can't help but judge her on her "Omigod you guys" performance which was like a trainwreck to my ears. It definitely is not as good as her dancing. Lauren reminds me too much of young Laura Bell Bundy. I want to see something different and refreshing. Autumn has the kind of voice that you want to continue to listen to, and although she's not a chorus girl, the fact that she could pick up the choreography and dance it while sick makes me think she'll be fine. Yes, she's not technically refined but she's good enough and Elle barely dances. Her audition reel video was adorable and her acting was perfect.
On a different note, I saw Legally Blonde's 7pm performance last night. Laura Bell was very emotional during the title song and she paused for quite a few seconds before hitting the last notes at the end. Andy Karl was hilarious. Orfeh was perfect. And am I the only person who thinks Amber Efe is the bomb? SO funny and her voice is amazing. Updated On: 7/14/08 at 04:11 PM
Now I am a fan of Autumn. I am a fan of Bailey. I am also a fan of Kristin Chenoweth. I am also a fan of Laura Bell Bundy.
And yes, I'm getting to my point.
It's been said on this thread that Bailey's accent is going to throw her off the block. HOWEVER. How come not many complained about Cheno and Bundy's Southern twang that found it's way in to the Gershwin? It didn't cause their performances to bomb but last I checked, they don't have bubble vehicles in Oklahoma OR Kentucky.
Like I said, I LOVED both of their Galindas but cut Bailey some slack, she's done pretty well at hiding it and has apparently had a few months to perfect it if indeed this thread speaks truth of her casting (in whatever role).
Anyway, that's my two cents. I'm sure I'm gonna get slammed for my thoughts.
"Sorority Elle" also shouldn't be played as a complete idiot, ditz, either. Despite the fact that she's "quirky" (for lack of a better term), she STILL has a 4.0 average (which is not easy to do, regardless of your major), and she still manages to get in to Harvard Law School (I know, that part of the story is a stretch, but go with it). If Elle is played like too much of a ditz early on, you have a hard time believing she ever even got into, and eventually thrives at (to the point of becoming valedictorian) Harvard Law School. Elle CANNOT be played at any point like an idiot, or the story makes no sense.
Unfortunately, when Heather "hack" Hach adapted the story for the stage, she either didn't understand this, or ignored it. Updated On: 7/14/08 at 04:13 PM
You won't hear me arguing! I can't stand the dumbing down of Elle in the show. I'm just talking about comic timing. Autumn didn't do well in terms of playing across Elle's comedic scenes at the beginning of the show.
Also, bubbliness (is that a word?) I can't see Autumn as that bubbly and happy-go-lucky.
Lauren's weakness is probably singing, but she can fix that easily. The squeakiness is a stylistic thing that can be fixed. Like I said, I would like her to mix more when she belts. She has a gorgeous tone when she isn't shouting, and a very powerful belt as well.
Jimmy, what are you doing here in the middle of the night? It's almost 9 PM!
I enjoy Lauren but I would say her biggest weakness is those facial expressions she makes when she is singing. I dont know if I would call it over-acting..but either way it's not a pretty sight. Downright ugly actually.
I agree about Bailey..she seems really vapid, and she showed no emotion whatsoever in the Legally Blonde ballad. Her voice is really nasal, her acting is horrendous, and I don't even think she's that great of a dancer either. If she wins, I will be really disappointed. My favorite is Lauren, but I see Autumn winning. I don't really think she's right for Elle, but if the other choice is Bailey, I definitely want Autumn to win. But on the bright side, if Bailey does end up winning, I really can't see her lasting the 2-week contract.
How come not many complained about Cheno and Bundy's Southern twang that found it's way in to the Gershwin? It didn't cause their performances to bomb but last I checked, they don't have bubble vehicles in Oklahoma OR Kentucky.
Well, Wicked is set in a mythical land of Oz, where we have no idea what sorts of accents the characters have. Kerry Ellis is currently doing the show with a British accent.
Legally Blonde is set in Malibu, then Massachusetts. Those are real places, where we would know exactly how the characters speak.
There's a huge difference.
However, I don't remember a bit of a Southern accent from Chenoweth in Wicked, nor do I recall much of one at all from Laura Bell Bundy in Legally Blonde.
I have both Bailey and Autumn's pages as friends and when I looked Paul, he only had 1 friend that I had and it was Autumn. I guess she will win. But didn't she say before that she didn't like being blonde or something? Also, they should show the girls wearing the atcual LB wig to see what she would look like for real.
I also would like to see the wigs on the girls.I think the non Autumn believers might have a better time seeing her as Elle if she was wearing a similar wig to the one she "might" be wearing in the show. I have a good feeling Autumn is going to do very well in tonight's ep. Oh, and Autumn could most definitely pull off the sorority girl side of Elle; check out her audition reel. Go A-girl :}
If you look at Autumn's Conversations on the iamonmtv website, she told someone today that it WAS so much fun being a blonde. Wouldn't she still be blonde if she was going to play Elle? I guess she could be playing Elle with a wig, but it would be tough wear a wig with all of the dance moves and hats Elle wears. I thought they would keep her blonde and give her hair extensions if she were the real Elle. Hmmmm. MTV sure is doing a good job of keeping everyone guessing!
