Three Days of Rain confirmed

This'd be a nice fit at the James Earl Jones.

I like the cast, but are these really big enough names to sell this show? I mean, yes, they obviously all have their fans, but are the majority of Superman and Heated Rivalry fans going to flock to a 3-person Broadway show that most tourists have probably never heard of?

Of course. The vast majority of people that see shows nowadays go just for their favorite celebrities and not for the shows themselves.

Yeah I'm deeply suspicious of their ability to sell this play, especially beginning in the dark days of February. It could be another PROOF or DOG DAY or HUGHIE (2016) situation of vastly overestimating star power.

Each of these 3 people are primarily known to the masses for one thing (Heated Rivalry, Superman, and Handmaid's Tale), and not in a household name kind of way. If you happen to not care about 2-3 of those things, this is an easy pass. Anna Shapiro is also not exactly on a hot streak at the moment.

Corenswet will star in a sports drama opening Christmas day, which got astoundingly high test scores and could be an Oscar contender with crossover potential and a long press tour. Or this could be a whole lot of PR spin.

Except we’ve seen a number of big names also fail to draw people in recently, such as Adrian Brody and Nick Jonas. Unless it’s an unimpeachable A-lister like Denzel or Clooney that people will pay to see in anything, the production or title itself also has to have appeal.

This is going to sell … precariously …

I think you’re gonna get mostly HEATED RIVALRY people chomping at the bit for early tickets at a higher price point and they’re gonna be ANNOYING.

I can see them selling ridiculously high to start before heading towards TDF.

If I remember correctly, the original production was panned, but only sold out because of Julia Roberts (and a rising Paul Rudd and Bradley Cooper).

The original production was in the mid-90s and featured Patricia Clarkson, Bradley Whitford, and John Slattery (talk about a stacked cast). I don’t know about critical response, but it was a Pulitzer finalist.

The Broadway revival was indeed largely panned. Julia Roberts got the brunt of the critiques, but it didn’t keep audiences away.

I wouldn't call Nick Jonas and Adrian Brody as big names though, not these days.

Nicks career has died off over the years and is now mainly reliant on Jonas Brothers, who the fans can actually see in concert still. He also isn't the hunk of the moment anymore.

Adrian Brody has never been big box office on his own.

I think its harder to know who is a big name that audiences will turn out for, and who won't though.

But this has two very current actors from two big hits, and who are also very much hot guys of the moment (which always helps). So I think this stands more chance than the shows Nick and Adrian were in.

Bad play and a cast that won’t sell (and isn’t this guy like secondary in Heated Rivalry?)

Whomever said you need an unimpeachable star is correct: there were several high profile plays with more legit stars than this that won’t recoup this season alone.

Just for the record, Canadian actor Francois Arnaud (aka "this guy") has a workmanlike career that extends well beyond Heated Rivalry, is regularly featured in men's fashion shoots, and has a strong Instagram account with more than 1.3M followers.   None of that may erase concerns about this play's potential audience appeal, but it is not like he has appeared out of nowhere.

I see the Adrian Brody and Nick Jonas situation as that they have a name to make a splash, but are not unimpeachable against bad reviews? Having them does not give you a pass to have a bad production (à la Denzel and Othello). I do think this cast falls into that bucket - they will pique people’s interest, but the play and show have to still be good or word of mouth (or lack there of) will kill it…

I didn’t know about that 90s production. I always thought the Julia Roberts one was the first. Thanks for the heads up.

That does sound like a STACKED cast

It also depends how active and motivated the fandoms are, and the disposable income they have.

Heated Rivalry and François have a very active and passionate following, who are also of the age who have more disposable income.

Less sure on the Superman fandom as that movie got mixed reviews and isn't the level of Marvel

On a superficial level I also know plenty of people who would jump at the chance of seeing David and François on the same stage haha

Pricing will also be key

Re Nick Jonas: I guess someone needs to tell Schick and Walmart that he's not a star. I just walked into my local Walmart & they'll be so embarrassed that they put up these massive posters of Jonas advertising razor blades

His role was supporting overall, but the episode that focused on him is many people's favorite, and his scene in the penultimate episode is arguably the most memorable in the entire season.

I actually think Francois will be the biggest draw. He’s an excellent actor with diverse credits and a sizable following. He’s on a show that became a phenomenon. His character and storyline was preferred by many to the leads. He actually seems most annoyed by the Heated Rivalry fervent fandom. I don’t see him engaging with the stans at the stage door. I think he’ll skip it most days. Those frauen can be intense, demanding and scary.
